rimarily being a complex chain of events, espionage and propaganda, the Cold War is anything but straightforward to analyze. What may appear to be wins in a country maybe be seen as defeats in another. Perspective and rhetoric and huge influences in understanding this complex period of the world’s history. That being said, I think the costs incurred by the USA because of the Cold War are the phenomena of the Red Scare, the internal hypocrisies of American Democracy, and the image of the USA due to the losses in multiple wars. To start of, due to the propaganda being used and the scientific prowess of the soviet union, Americans at home were terrified of communisms gripping on their shores. The sheer paranoia can be expressed by the Mc Carthyism …show more content…
The first benefit for the United States comes from stronger relations with western European counties through forming the Nato pact. This pact still influences how the world works to this day. Strong relations in terms of politics, trade, values and military were founded through this pact. Making peace with the Chinese improved relations in the Cold War and also gave the US a strong trade partner that still has lasting impacts on our economy today. The biggest victory from the Cold War comes from the de tante period, where the declining economies of the nations in the soviet union gave rise to trade and peace relations between the two super powers of the world. This was formalized with a SALT 1 agreement being signed which agreed upon the decrease in warheads being manufactured, hence improving the relationship and prospects of peace in the world. With the Union being dissolved later, the US took the mantle as the sole superpower of the world as we now it
After World War Two the U.S. and Soviet Union had a long-lasting rivalry since the Soviets were communists and the U.S. was not. This period is known as the Cold War because it was a major conflict where the U.S. and Soviet Union fought indirectly. The Cold War impacted the U.S. domestic policy and American society because it created American fear of communism. This fear later led to losing rights and the government switching where their money was being spent in certain areas such as general education.
The Cold War wasn’t really much a war with large scale fighting between the two sides, the United Sates and the Soviet Union. The war started in 1947 and ended around 1991. The United States saw that The Soviet Union was a trying to spread communism and this was a threat to their effort on trying to let the Eastern Europe countries capitalist countries. The United States formed NATO with other countries to create a protective alliance system. This caused a worry to the Soviet Union, a threat to their security.
Also, the Cold War had impacts on the Civil Rights Movement, the “Evil Empire” speech, and Watergate. The Cold War proved that both the Soviets and the Americans had nuclear weapons ready to use to destroy each other if needed. The atomic bomb created a lot of tension between the United States and the Soviet Union and became the focus of the Cold War. Due to this, Americans felt threatened that everyone would be killed and feared the world would end.
The Cold War is a proxy war that is said to be the root cause of a triumph of capitalism over communism. This geo-political conflict between the United States and The Soviet Union lasted a total of about fort-five years and ended with major economic impacts in both countries. During the Cold War, the Americans took it upon themselves to try and boost the United State’s economy. During President Reagan’s term, he went through with numerous tax cuts and deregulation in order to stimulate the economic growth. Many people believed, “due to the advantageous economic position that the US held in the beginning of the war and continued to have throughout that the US was destined to victory from the outset” (The U.S. Victory in the Cold War).
The Cold War was a war full of politics and beliefs along with brutal fighting. Communism was seen as a major threat to the United States. The Soviet Union was trying to, at the time, influence other countries of its communist beliefs in hopes of gaining allies and resources. The Soviets expanded after WWII and the Americans feared this, adding tense to their “alliance.” The Soviet Union’s main targets were Europe but also to gain global exposure and power as well.
Effects of Cold War on United States domestic policy and society As World War II got closer to an end, the U.S. and the Soviet Union gained great power, and the competition with these two countries increased in many fields like the development of nuclear technology. However, at the same time, relationships between these two countries deteriorated especially due to the conflict of the ideology which is defined as the Cold War started in 1947 and ended 1991. Both domestic policy and society in the U.S. were greatly affected by the Cold War. However, the effect on American society was mostly negative as the conflicts of citizens due to fear of Communism and effect on normal life show.
Conflicts were fueled by various events and leaders and left the world in constant fear of political combat. The outcomes of the Cold War can be seen as both a victory and a loss. The United States and the Soviet Union remained strong and both came out of the cold war as a super power. Countries became heavily independent on aid from the United States. The aftermath of the Cold War was felt in the United States long after the war had
During the Cold War, the United States and NATO competed with the Soviet Union and The Warsaw Pact militarily, economically, and ideologically to prove which country was the true world power. Both sides created massive military forces and huge stockpiles of nuclear weapons. Although the two world powers never went to war, the policy of containment led the United States into the vicious and merciless Korean and Vietnam wars. In both wars the United States invested billions of dollars and thousands of troops. The United states also invested a lot into dozens of third world countries in Africa and South America that were at risk of falling to communism and tried to push them toward a more democratic form of
The United States won the war against the Soviet Union. There is still a debate over the role of the United States in the demise of the USSR. Some say America's sometimes hard-line approach actually prolonged the Cold War by giving political cover to the Soviet leaders who'd rather talk about
The Cold War had two sides, the United States, and the Soviet Union, both of these countries took measures, including giving money, fighting proxy wars, building a wall, or building missiles to fight for their ideals. Before talking about specific events of the Cold War, it must be understood that there were
Thanks to the Cold War, it transformed the USA to the only superpower in the
When comparing the Cold War and the War on Terror, special attention must be paid to the context surrounding these wars, the strategy used, the rationale for entering the war, the costs of the war, and the overall outcome. Each of these areas are vastly explained or rationalized differently in the two “wars.” To fully understand why the United States entered the Cold War, we must first look at the events and circumstances surrounding the Soviet Union and the United States during this time in history. Two examples of these circumstances are, the major shift in distribution power to the United States and the Soviet Union which came after the “defeat of Germany and Japan and the decline of the British and French Empires.” (NSC-68).
he first chapter of The Cold War: A New History begins by comparing the United States to the U.S.S.R. and talking about the similarities between the two. It also talks about Communism and how Marx deemed it necessary in order to build up the economy. Lenin tried to implement Communism in Russia. They were not quite ready for that kind of system, so Stalin tried to modernize the economy. The U.S.S.R. had more casualties in World War II, but things were not necessarily looking great in America either.
Slide 1 Cold War Task 5 By: Cristina Prince Slide 2 The Soviet Union and the United States rose as superpowers, and the world progressed towards bipolar politics, a state in which two rather equally matched sides confronted one another. The United States strengthened much of Europe through the Marshall Plan, giving $12 billion dollars in aid to Western Europe after WWII. Resulting in implementing of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a defense agreement meant to organize opposition to the Soviet Union and China, both politically and militarily.
The Cold War lasted forty-four years and left a lasting social impact on the United States. The spread of communism and The Soviet Union left many Americans in a constant state of fear and paranoia. The space race between the United States and The Soviet Union significantly impacted the education system in the United States and the curriculum that was taught for years to come. The social emphasis on gender caused a crisis on American masculinity and feminism by influencing many to assume certain gender roles and feel that they were not masculine enough or too feminine because of their view on communism. The Cold War socially impacted the United States through fear, education, and gender.
