I’m sitting in my room in my house in Washington and all of a sudden I hear a knock on the door. It’s the government and they said that they will be digging up my backyard for an environmentally friendly piece of equipment. Sounds absurd, right? Well, this is what happening in the Dakotas to Native Americans. The Dakota Access Pipeline is a line to carry oil from an oil-rich area in North Dakota to the final destination in Illinois. This pipeline goes directly through culturally important areas in the Sioux Indian Reservation. Many people have protested against the project, but the Army Corps of Engineers keep giving it the go-ahead (Ellis). But these people are still knowledgeable on this issue but support the builders of the pipeline. Some people may look at the pipeline project and wonder where there can be any positives, but the people in favor see the number of jobs created and the amount of money profited by it as a superior outcome. These economic benefits include adding around “$156 million in sales and income taxes to state and local governments as well as add 8,000 to 12,000 construction jobs” (Park). With regard to the money raised by taxes for the government, this may be a positive in the economy of the states but not in the economy of the people. Illinois, being the states that the pipeline route ends in, will also be heavily taxed by this project. With a study presented regarding the rates of taxes in the states, Illinois ranked to have the highest total tax rates on median U.S. household, paying 14.54% of their total income to taxes (Kiernan). Would these people who already are more overtaxed than the rest of the nation want to pay even more? The jobs that are said to be created from this project may provide thousands with an income for a year, but that is only temporary. Once the pipeline is complete, there will only be “up to 40 permanent operating jobs” ("Dakota Access Pipeline Overview"). Meaning that 99.6% of the workers will be let go from their jobs ocean the one year project is compete. While the numbers may look good on paper in favor of the pipeline, what the builders are not telling people is how excessive and temporary these numbers will
