Travel is obviously as old as mankind. Writing about Travel or Travel Theory is a delicate process by which writers on the subject are devoted to mark and record historical events, both of their homelands and their travel destinations. Examples in Travel Theory vary from old literature up to modern times with an aim of building a focused theory or theories about Travel and Travel Writing in general. It is commonly believed that the overall historical account of civilizations stems from Travel Writing. The Sumerian leader Gilgamesh is a traveller and a ruler. Much of the description about this ruler comes in the form of mythical heroism: a man who is said to be “all knowledgeable, to whom all the countries are known, wise and close to secrets.”1 This man makes of travel his source of knowledge and life. There is no one model for travel, and therefore travel theory (Meijer, 1986). The account of a traveller and the sum of writings he produces during his journey may often be complex and intricate. Behind every traveller personal attitudes, motivations, political and institutional backgrounds are the main factors that contribute to the success or failure of his theory. Some travel theories are critically unpredictable and suggest less systematic implication of thought. Lewis (1988) indicates that travel is meant to “gratify the boundless intellectual curiosity unleashed by the Renaissance.”5 and is therefore driven by the quest for knowledge, culture, politics and economics altogether. The Odyssey, one of the world’s most famous stories, has been under debate on whether on whether or not it conforms to be a hero’s journey, a type of pattern theorized to be at the core of many myths. To understand its potential monomyth-hood, the story has be understood, as well as the different phases of a hero’s journey. A hero’s journey, by definition, must include a few characteristics: a phase where the hero leaves their home and decides on a quest, a period marked by a discovered conflict, an all-out struggle, the development of the hero, and the hero bettering the lives of those back at home. Gilgamesh is an epic hero in the story Gilgamesh: A New English Version because he endured a long journey. A common trait that all epic heroes share is their long journey that they must travel in search of triumph, treasure etc. Some evidence for this is "At four hundred miles they stopped to eat, at a thousand miles they pitched their camp. They had traveled for just three days and nights, a six weeks’ journey for ordinary men. " Ordinary people could never have traveled this length hence why they're epic.
The Epic of Gilgamesh shows and describe the journey of a successful hero. Throughout his quest, Gilgamesh goes through a departure, initiation, and a return stage. When Gilgamesh and Enkidu sets out to go on the heroic journey to defeat Humbaba he experiences the first departure stage. The initiation stage occurred when Enkidu died and Gilgamesh started the second heroic journey searching for immortality. Gilgamesh search for immortality was beyond the initiation stage he searched for it through every quest and journey he encountered.
Man and God's Relationship The Epic of Gilgamesh and In the Beginning have many similarities. Both incorporate the Hero’s Journey and three archetypes: character, situational, and symbolic. Both are about man's relationship with God(s), including man’s struggle with temptation, and the serpent as a symbol.
Gilgamesh is an epic hero because, he part divine, interacts with gods and his story has a series of adventures and superhuman victories. Gilgamesh is a king that shows off his power and enviably shows his weak side in most altercations. Most scholars see him as a historical figure, but I myself think he is definitely an epic hero. He oppresses people who call out to the gods, this is not very heroic, but his other actions will show the truth. Gilgamesh IS an epic hero.
Literature, art, and music have always found ways to transcend the physical barriers and borders humans put up. They influence cultures other than the ones of their origins. Similarities between religions, mythologies, and folk stories have been noted often throughout time by academics and historians. The holy texts of some major religions like The Old Testament and the Quran share many overlapping literary themes and events with older religions and folk tales, like the ancient Sumerian poem; “The Epic of Gilgamesh”. Many examples of overlapping themes is the presence and references to great floods, supernatural influences, otherworldly gardens, and battles between good and evil.
Cultural Values A demigod named Gilgamesh, tragically loses his best friend, then he goes on a journey to find the secret of immortality. One could say that these specific cultural values work effectively for the Gods and the people of Uruk, such as rituals, war, and making sacrifices to make this culture successful. Commonly this culture mostly performs rituals for everlasting life or immortality. Gods are afraid of mortality and death itself.
Literary devices are used to bridge the gaps and fill in the cracks for me where simple words do not suffice in some stories. I find myself constantly searching stories for and identifying different types of literary devices. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, three uses of literary devices were demonstrated and used consistently. These literary devices are: repetition, imagery and flashbacks. This literary narrative is centered on an epic journey that utilizes literary devices to enhance the complexity and understanding in the story.
The Epic of Gilgamesh: Relevant Truth for Today’s Society The Epic of Gilgamesh is set in Uruk, an ancient city of the ancient Mesopotamian civilization of Sumer, now modern-day Iraq. The epic was said to be written by Sin-liqe-unninni, but it is based on five earlier Sumerian poems with no known author. The piece was difficult to translate, and there are two main version for the Epic of Gilgamesh. This is the result of the environment during the time the piece was being written.
The Epic of Gilgamesh is the first epic poem to be written in ancient West Asia. It was written around the third millennium BCE in Mesopotamia by Sumerian people (Spodek, 127). The epic is based on actual an historical figure, a Sumerian king who reigned the city-state of Uruk around third millennium BCE. Ashurbanipal, the last Neo-Assyrian king who was literate, built a great library in his capital and preserved 20,000 tablets including the earliest complete version of The Epic of Gilgamesh (Spodek, 128). Sumerian attitudes towards gods, friendship, and the story of the great flood are revealed throughout the epic.
The Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest story known to mankind, being written on Sumerian clay almost five thousand years ago (Garone). Since the story was originally known orally, the culture and themes from The Epic of Gilgamesh must have existed long before it was finally inscribed (Mark 4). Having known this, the cultures and themes can be compared to today’s society, discovering about how they have shifted and evolved, and also observe how they are similar. The ancient days of Gilgamesh has brought culture that has greatly influenced today’s society. Because Gilgamesh was set around the time of late Babylonian or early Sumerian society, the Babylonian and Sumerian cultures also play a role in shaping the world into what is is today (Mark).
Heroes are people who conquer all evil, do the impossible, and help everyone but oneself. Throughout time what one considered a hero has changed, the modern definition of a hero is a typically a man, who is admired as a result of his/her courage, achievements, or braveness. However, back when The Epic of Gilgamesh was written, a hero was someone godlike with courage, and ability to do selfless acts. Based on this definition, it is clear that Gilgamesh strives to be a hero. Not only does he conquer evil and battle monsters, he also does the impossible and obtains new knowledge of death.

Travelling helps us to know more about different lifestyles, cultures, cuisines and festivals. Visiting new sights and exploring new places increases our knowledge and widens our global perspective. We get to learn so many things about different cultures and customs. It makes us open minded and gives us a new viewpoint about life and it also changes some of our bad habits.
FROM THE BEGINNING OF 1900 TO OUR DAYS Until the first half of 1900, going on holiday was an experience belonging to a privileged class, something that only few could afford. In the 50s-60s, the economic growth and the evolution of means of transport made going on holiday something accessible to a broader range of the people. Back then, the typical tourists were travelling to the same places, at the same time and to do the same things, because there wasn’t that much choice. This type of tourist had not established preferences, it was predictable, driven by emulation and had not yet manifested any special needs.
