This quote has to do with Puritanism and Individuality. The Puritan society requires its members to follow strict rules of social order. But because the focus was on social order, it left little room for personal freedoms. The people who think or act independently are seen as rebels and are taken care of. (Got rid of). Reverend Hale, who is naive and convinced of his greatness in discerning spirits, realizes he has caused a lot of damage. In order to fix one of his damages, he hopes that Elizabeth Proctor to convince John Proctor to sign a false confession in order to save his
Option D With the incline of Hysteria throughout the village of salem the so called “Virtuous Puritans” became backstabbing in some cases greedy folk who were only in it for themselves. From Putnam to Parris they were profiting trying to gain something or save themselves from trial. Putnam himself would just outlandishly accuse many villagers most likely them all innocent just to gain land for his own greed gains. As a side note to keep himself from the danger of the trials.
Puritans are a people with a very strong belief in both God and the power of God. When people see power, they interpret it in different ways. Some know of power through anger and impulse, while others see power through the goodness the powerful one shows. Although Anne Bradstreet and Jonathan Edwards are both puritan poets, their writings convey mainly different, though sometimes similar, views on God because they have different perceptions of His will and the use of His power. Anne Bradstreet listens to and accepts anything that God wishes, and that is shown through her poem Upon the Burning of my House.
While this proved to be a formula for self-righteousness and intolerance, the Puritans, at their best, acknowledged that their own commonwealths also stood under the judgment of God (Frey, 2009,
In other words, everyone is extremely similar, and the rules represent how the restrictions help the people in the town of Salem. With each individual given a role, everybody was able to function in harmony and build off of each other. Many critics may argue that these rules were too strict; however, I believe that the Puritans
Laws were used to prevent them from becoming people of the devil or from doing infamous acts. Sometimes the church would cause great fear in the people or inform them about what was going on in the village. As Reverend Parris says “I’ll lead them in a psalm, but let you say nothing of witchcraft yet” (Miller, 918). The law enforcement would be severe. People who danced would be whipped, as Abigail Williams says, “Uncle we did dance; let you tell them I confessed it–and I'll be whipped if I must be" (Miller, 915).
Intolerance is the unwillingness to accept views, beliefs, or behavior that differs from one’s own. People don’t stop and think about what issues their thoughts could really cause, so they end up stating what they think. Prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Often times, people tend to judge people based off of a single idea, whether or not it is true or in correct context. They end up truly hurting a person by doing so.
That the world was created by God in six days total and on the seventh day he rested. He created the land, the water, the birds, the fish, and the rest of the world. The Lord put Adam and Eve on the earth which were the first humans and they created sin by disobeying God. The goal for the Puritans is to live with absolute purity to have no sin
To begin the book, Arthur Miller defines a deeper cause for the witch trials,
3. How does Parris nullify Proctor’s testament? How is Giles’s deposition turned against him? Parris says that Proctor only attends to church once a month. Giles’ deposition turned against him because when he told the court his wife read books, it became evidence against his wife for
In other words Danforth argues, if these men don’t continue the trials with him, they'll be sinners. In the same way as Reverend Parris, Judge Danforth only refuses for the trials to stop because he wants to maintain a “holy”
Men and women also had different takes on sin. Women were more likely to read their sins as a pact with the devil no matter how severe the sin was whereas men paid close attention to the sin as an individual moment of weakness in which they would be able to return to their relationship with God. Believing that they could turn to the devil themselves, women were more likely to then accept that other women could be equally demonized.
He states, “Aye. But the Devil is a wily one, you cannot deny it. However, she is far from accused, and i know she will not be. I thought, sir, to put some questions as to the Christian character of this house, if you’ll permit me” (1300). He asks them these questions to outlaw if they are a witch or not, Puritans are supposed to be godly people, so if they show any signs of ungodliness they are arrested.
During the Salem Witch Trials a lot of people were accused of using witchcraft. As a result many people died for other people’s lies, rumors, and selfishness. There is one person that really caused and is most to blame for all the chaos, her name is Abigail. Abigail is to blame for all that has happened in the Witch Trials, the reason for that is because of all the accusing and lying she has done. In addition, it all leads up to her for instance, she used a doll to accuse people of witchcraft.
There are many Puritan Beliefs that feed the action of the play, The Crucible. A few examples of how the Puritans relate to God and the Bible on conditions dealing with the witchcraft hysteria are: the religion had very strict rules, in this community they always follow the 10 Commandments, and if anyone rebelled from the town rules they would be hanged or stoned. The first way the Puritan beliefs relate to The Crucible is the Puritans were expected to be in church every Sunday, Sabbath Day. Everyone was strongly tied in with their religion and always put God first. The Puritans always relate everything to the way God wrote in the Bible.
Although the natural decider of one’s power in the Puritan society is land, the Devil, himself, holds ultimate power; despite the fact that he does not appear as a human figure, he controls the thoughts and actions of the Puritan
