The Hunger Games is the first book in the Hunger Games Trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. The book is set in the future in a dystopian world that once was the United States. The new nation is named Panem where the Capitol rules over 12 Districts. The Capitol has absolute power over the Districts and forces the Districts to participate in a cruel yearly competition where a teenage girl and teenage boy between the ages of 12 and 18 are randomly chosen in a ceremony called the Reaping to become tributes to fight to the death. Only one victor can win, which brings glory to the District he or she is from. The book opens with the heroine of the story, Katniss Everdeen, just waking up on the morning of the Reaping.
