An honor code or honor system is a set of rules or principles governing a community based on a set of rules or ideals that define what constitutes honorable behavior within that community. An honor code implements a set code that specifies certain rules in their school. An honor code doesn’t benefit students trust in their school system. An honor code can end up making students engage in mistrust, create misuse of the code, and can cause students to be at odds with each other. When students are forced to commit to an honor code, every student isn’t going to be 100% honest.
Standardized testing has become a very controversial topic amongst the nation. There are two sides, one that agrees that these tests are doing well for students and school officials, and another that argues that these tests are hurting the students taking them and should be put to a stop. Norman R. Augustine wrote an article for the need of standardized testing, and Jessie B. Ramey States the ways that the tests are impairing the learning capability of the students. Norman uses three arguments that people opposing the standardized test would most often use.
The students inability to stay loyal to Margot ties into the similarities of peer pressure today. The students fear of being left out and Williams vocal authority explain why they are influenced by him. Peer pressure is just overall good and bad depending on how it was used. If students are bound to cheat and the honor code is not being enforced or is not fair, why have it? The environment in many schools impacts how students view the honor code. A school with a cheater mentality and an overall acceptance of cheating and plagiarism will have no use for an honor code, since they will not follow it. However, change the environment of the type of students and an honor code can now become beneficial and essential (Jennifer and
According to Manpreet and Harpreet Kaur’s article “Study of peer influence among university students,” peer pressure is the influence a peer group has on an individual and that peer pressure can lead one into doing dishonest practices. Manpreet and Harpreet are explaining that college students can be pressured to cheat by a group of classmates. Because of the intensity in pleasing the wrong crowd despite the severe consequences, students fail in academic honesty in that they are afraid of standing for what is honest; therefore they plagiarize. As there are many reasons why a student can cheat, there is a wide variety of easy ways college students
In the postscript, Petrie explains that he wanted to write an essay “that would expose… the dangers and hypocrisy” of the collegiate athletic system. The diction of that sentence alone uncovers Petrie’s purpose. The word “expose” implies that under the sugar coating of temporary fame and fortune, there is an ugly reality for college athletes. Since this is a persuasive essay, the purpose was gradually revealed. As Petrie stated in the postscript, he starts by establishing credibility with his experiences as a student and educator and presenting both sides of his argument to gain the respect of his audience.
When considering the choice of whether or not students should get paid for good grades, the choice should definitely be no, students shouldn’t get paid for grades. One reason being that students should want to learn without always thinking they’re going to get money. Another reason is that students are remaining focused on money and not education when it should be the other way around. Though, there are many reasons as to why children shouldn’t get paid for grades. If students and others disregard the topic that children shouldn’t get paid for good grades, it will be their own problem and it can negatively affect a students future due to not having certain life skills and will only end up hurting them in the long run.
One of the most crucial traits a scholar can develop is a high level of self-efficacy which is essential to academic success. The ability to achieve and to recognize that success can come from being industrious should be the deterring factor for a student who considers committing the act of plagiarism. What is plagiarism one might ask? Voelker, Love & Pentina (2012) define plagiarism as, “putting forward another’s work as your own” (p. 37). This very pervasive problem plagues the education system, and many researchers and psychologist seek to explain the driving force behind students’ academic dishonesty.
Some researchers assert that this problem must be external and is mostly teachers’ responsibility. First of all, according to Gökçe DİŞLEN, most of the time students lose their interest and enthusiasm towards language learning due to insecure classroom atmosphere and pedagogues’ harsh attitude (2013). Bad tempered and strict teachers tend to not only make students feel uncomfortable but also themselves. Furthermore, educators must make lessons more appealing though different activities, give constant positive feedback and encourage students to learn a
Fairmont Heights has had a long history filled with many questionable decisions and people making those decisions. An honor code is put into place to better build the integrity of people and the school they attend. And by making Fairmont Heights have an honor code would be the biggest waste of time the school would ever think of doing. Honor codes belong at already established schools that are better than Fairmont and will always be. The main reason an honor code would be foolish to instill in the minds of the student body would be due to the fact that Fairmont Height students have about as much integrity as Benedict Arnold.
Laurel high School is an academic establishment that has it’s fair share of rules concerning academic integrity. However, the honor codes on certain practice, particularly cheating, are not thoroughly enforced. I propose that my school should revise its policies on cheating to ensure that students are earning the grades they deserve and not achieving through academic dishonesty. As aforementioned, Laurel already has an honor code for cheating. The general policy is that as a consequence, the students involved should be punished and their grades put in jeopardy.

Because of the pressure it puts on the taker, many people believe that it should be completely abolished; this however is a total over reaction to the situation. Yes it is true that a very important test can cause stress, but we would not have to be taking it if it was not important. standardized testing it an essential tool for judging a student skill level.
