Geoffrey Canada does an excellent job of bringing his readers to the streets of the South Bronx and making them understand the culture and code of growing up in a poor, New York City neighborhood in the ‘50s and ‘60s. In his book, Fist, Stick, Knife, Gun, Canada details, through his own childhood experiences, the progression of violence in poverty plagued neighborhoods across America over the last 50 years. From learning to be “brave” by being forced to fight his best friend on a sidewalk at six-years-old, to staring down an enraged, knife wielding, “outsider” with nothing to defend himself but nerve, Canada explains the nightmare of fear that tens of thousands of children live through every day growing up in poor neighborhoods.

After reflecting on all that you have learned in this course, share what you believe is one current trend in the human services field in meeting the needs of individuals, families, and/or the community.

Reminiscing on my lacrosse days, I would not be the person I am today without that experience. By being involved in such a pivotal role, I gained maturity, leadership, time management, communication skills, and most importantly, confidence and learned how to believe in myself. To be an RA, it is essential to have all these. My time management skills I have thoroughly developed will help me balance school, outside activities, and the demands of an RA. Additionally, the maturity, leadership, communication skills I developed serving as a liaison between coaches, parents, and players will transfer to the RA job benefitting the hall director, other resident assistants, and the students. Additionally, I gained self-confidence. An RA is one who has to be responsible, he can’t consistently ask others how to do something or what to do, instead, he has to rely on himself. By attaining confidence at a young age, I can simultaneously utilize my confidence and strong, successful work ethic to fulfill the RA

Homelessness, while widely acknowledged, continues to be an ever-prevalent issue within society. This urged me to take action. In order to compromise an accurate, precise claim, I needed to heavily research and analyze the various aspects of this issue -- specifically regarding the causes of homelessness, addressing the stereotypes and stigmas surrounding it, and by finding solutions at a personal, local, and national level. Initially, I intended to include pathos as a primary theme throughout my sources, but I eventually found logos as a more prevalent, more central theme that appeared throughout each source. Presented primarily through statistics, logos stands as the central theme.

I want to be an RA so that I can become more involved in the Geneseo community in a positive way, by helping and representing other students. In particular, I would love to be a resource for incoming students to Geneseo who are nervous and unsure about how they'll find their place here, like I was when I was a freshman. I also think being an RA is a great chance to develop leadership, conflict mediation, and public speaking skills, which are important to have now and in the future. Throughout my high school career, I was forced into many situations where I was challenged to connect with my peers and serve as a role model for future students. Whether it be my involvement in the school marching band, or helping students in community tutoring sessions, I have always made it my goal to better the people around me through my own efforts. Throughout my high school career, I have put forth my best effort to connect with my peers, transform individuals, and make a difference in my community.

Children who grow up in poverty are faced with a series of issues which impact their education and social atmosphere. In both the school and home setting these children lack the proper resources which they need to succeed academically. Across the country, people have begun creating programs which aim to help children in poverty succeed, despite their socioeconomic status. These programs range from after-school reading, tutoring services, charter schools, and free summer programs. All of these programs provide children with extra academic help which they may not be receiving in school or at home.

Secure Dwellings continues to assist homeless children and their female caregivers throughout the state of Alabama and surrounding states. The program is currently serving 10 mothers and 22 children as of this board meeting date. I often wonder how they able to continue live with all of the unfortunate circumstances and experiences that have cause their lives to be in disarray, some situations due to poor choices and sometimes due to no fault of their own.

The Toronto Regent Park area is known for being a culturally diverse, yet highly impoverished and socio-economically divided are. The Regent Park revitalization project is a large opportunity for Toronto Community Housing to recreate the area to become a vibrant, mixed income community.

Applying to be a resident assistant is one of the best and most rewarding decisions that I made in college. Without my experiences in Residence Life, my college experience would not have been as rich as fulfilling. I was a freshmen women’s RA for my first two years as an RA and I always look back fondly over that time. Although there was definitely a lot of struggles and conflicts that occurred in my freshmen modules, that’s really where my heart is. Over my past three years as an RA, I have always been interested in hearing about and learning about the experiences of other freshmen women RAs. From what I have heard from them, everyone has a different experience — some positive and some negative. I think that this is largely due to the fact that the job is multi-faceted. As an RA, you have to juggle many, many different roles, both within the job and in your personal life. RAs are mentors, friends, supervisors, mandated reporters, event planners and paraprofessionals, to name a few. RAs also have other

Another case in which Junior’s ambition is recognized would be when Eugene, a friend of Junior’s father recognizes the ambition that exists within Junior and how it greatly differs from that of the other people on the reservation, including himself. When Eugene drops off Junior in Reardon, he says “It’s pretty cool you’re doing this”, he said...Yeah man I could never do it. I’m a wuss.” (72). The people on the reservation are impressed by Junior’s courage and his willingness to face his fear in lieu of a positive outcome. This is especially important on the reservation due to the fact that people have specific ways of living and specific patterns of life that they follow. Going against this is extremely rare and can be met with criticism.

Homelessness is a struggle that most people don’t know, or that people ignore because they frown on homeless people. These people frown on homeless people because the homeless are often unshaven ruff looking people that had a bad turn in life, this life changing event that turned them into what some people frown upon. These people are frowned upon by so many but the people that frown upon them have no idea what their going through.
