In the 1930’s, Salinas Valley was a hard place to live. Located on California’s Central Coast, Salinas is a very dry and desert-like area. In these 1930’s, the famous Dust Bowl occurred, making agriculture very challenging. This North Californian City is also where the famous novel, “Of Mice and Men” takes place.
Development of an area can easily affect the society of that area. The landscape influences a society. Things like airports, roads, economic status can also change society. Atlanta has been largely impacted by its airport and its economic status. Atlanta has one of the largest sex trafficking cities, and child sex trafficking is a large problem in Atlanta. The reason Atlanta is a prime location is because the developments near and in Atlanta have made it an easy place to run and to hide sex trafficking.
Though agriculture clearly played a fundamental role in Wisconsin’s existence, no component proved more paramount than that of timber. This realm more than any else molded Wisconsin into the self sufficient commercial-centric state that it is today, and thus propelled it into the public eye. Even Eau Claire early on was notable for maintaining a distinct and reputable timber industry itself. Not only did the plethora of wood provide more than enough resources to aid in constructing the ever-expanding popular railroads, which physically connected Wisconsin to everywhere else, but it also metaphysically shifted Wisconsin from settlement transience to established permanence. Settlers would no longer live in rudimentary shacks, but true, massively statured buildings. As a result of the booming timber industry, Wisconsin served as the idyllic autonomy in the eyes of everyone who dared looked. Wisconsin’s cities leaped in both size and population as its major production fields symbiotically erected and evolved them from the ground
The geography of Washington changed along with the building of the transcontinental railroads. Cities and farmland sprouted up in places, and others grew exponentially. Natural resources were extracted from environments, such as timber. For example, James J. Hill began using the land surrounding the Great Northern Line. He produced cattle, hogs, and wheat. Besides this, he also received a large land grant, for which he transferred into a timber industry. (Artifact T) By doing so, Hill turned natural timberland into farmland, modifying the original landscape. The railroads also made the demand for tunnels and cutting through mountains. Chinese men drilled holes into the mountains and filled them with dynamite. (Artifact N) The cutting and drilling meant for reworking the natural mountains and making them beneficial to our needs. The cutting also meant affecting the land and changing it. This was needed for the railroads to continue on their proposed routes that also altered the landscape, as well. The rail lines had cut through forest, causing deforestation, and cut through mountainous rock. The railways that draw through Washington go through natural land features, such as mountain ranges. (Artifact W) Bridges and blasting mountain rock took over 6 years, all the way to the completion of the transcontinental railroad, in 1869. During these times, much land
Undoubtedly, there are many factors that can impact temporal patterns as illustrated in the climographs. Both of the cities is located in a different part of the world and experiences different climates. Each of the cities have very different geographical layouts and factors that affect temperature and precipitation throughout the year. In Toronto, Canada climate is moderate with warm humid summers and generally cold winters. The climate in Toronto, Canada is moderate due to its southerly location within the country and its proximity to Lake Ontario. The climate in Toronto, Canada varies a lot due to a great distance from the north to south. Also, different elevations produce different climate conditions. Lake Ontario affects the climate in Toronto. During the summer, there is cool lake breezes with a lot of humidity. In the winter, the effect of Lake Ontario produces warm lake breezes,
The Roaring Twenties were full of dramatic, social, political, and economic changes ("The Roaring Twenties,1). Post World War I, the era marked the beginning of modern times with new and worthy developments. More and more people were abetted to live in the cities, most people had jobs, therefore money to spend, and they spend it by “having a good time” (McNeese,88). While the society got rid of their miseries; sciences, arts, and businesses renewed themselves by evolving. This research paper briefly gives examples from advances in technology, transportation, and entertainment while discussing their benefits to the United States.
The Gold Rush was a time that change many people’s lives in good and a bad way. In this essay I will explain how the Gold Rush affect the US in a good way, bad away, and interesting facts.
There were droughts. Infestations of locusts ravaged the future state. Another barrier was they had no trees(Tom Hayes). With few exceptions trees were along the rivers and in the Black Hills and to the settlers coming from the wooded east, trees were extremely important for providing building materials, fuel, and fencing.
Question 1-Describe in detail how irrigation changed yuma/Southern Arizona. Irrigation changed yuma in many ways, with how much water we use and to help with farming. Irrigation has helped crops and land become extremely and are more capable of making enormous crops, better for selling. Also with the help of irrigation more farms could be set up meaning more jobs for people less water being used less money being spent. Our irrigation system that has been around since about 1904 has helped Yuma expand.
Irrigation managed to create some very big changes in Yuma and some of these changes created some both positive and negative effects throughout the years. Even though irrigation was very beneficial to Yuma County there was a lot of different costs to it. The technology that was used and all of the laborers that were needed in order to make irrigation successful in Yuma cost a lot. Everything that was used in all the different projects that were created had a very big impact in Yuma County all in their own way.
Nya and Salva were affected by culture, time, and place. I think that place has had the most effect on their lives. Climate, resources ,and where they live all resemble place. These things have had the most effect on them. For Nya and Salva where they lived and traveled affected who they became.
During the period of 1830 to 1860, it is the time that had been changed American West so much. It is actually critical and controversial for the specific reasons and evidence why the American obviously becomes more significant. I would like to highlight the important points about this issue. Since the end of Louisiana Purchase, the US government broadly stated the idea of expansionism, around 1840, through many areas of America in order to occupy territory, the growth of federal government, and the creation of a bureaucratic state. With Polk as a president of US, he declared the needs to expand the territories westward. It led to the War and conflict with many powerful European countries that still occupied the areas, such as, Spain, Britain,
Mendocino is a small, beautiful historic town on the Pacific Ocean. It is very popular with tourists, but how did it make its name? Could it be because of its climate and geographical advantages, giving it the Pacific Ocean, redwood forests and its wine?
Finally, the last topic I chose to write about is behavior geography, since it is a very relevant topic that influences the mental maps we have created for ourselves. In “Intro to geography” by Dahlman Renwick behavioral geography is described as, “how our perception influences our behavior” (Renwick, 268) and the images one visualizes when thinking of these perceptions is our “mental map.” Behavioral geography greatly influences one’s mental maps of locations. As people have formed many ideas about specific areas based on factors such as other opinions, what the mass media displays, the median income of a town, crime rates, and the person’s beliefs. For example, several people generate mental maps about cities even if they have never visited
There are many reasons people live in certain areas such as the availability of food, water, and jobs. The type of weather can also decide where someone will live. The ease of transportation in an area can also be a factor. People even live in an area because that is where their ancestors settled.
