Macbeth was manipulated into the killings and the people who manipulated him are the witches. The witches told macbeth that he will be king, so he later murdered Duncan to claim the throne for himself. The witches then told Macbeth and Banquo, “Your descendants will be kings, even though you will not be one.”(1.1.51) This made Macbeth feel threatened, which led
Even considering all of that, Macbeth is most guilty because only he can control his actions. The Three Witches tell Macbeth that he will become Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland. They also predicted that Banquo’s sons will end up being kings, but that Banquo would never become king. After their
Shakespeare uses sleep not as a peaceful resting state, but to reveal Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s guilty consciences. Macbeth is given prophecies throughout the play that prove his guilt and shame. In the beginning, Macbeth’s hunger for power is ignited by the prophecies from the witches. He likes the scheme of killing Duncan so he will be closer to the throne. As the play continues, he realizes how dreadful they actually are.
The girls blamed many people of the town of being witches and caused conflict all over the village. People in the village had power by influencing others to lie in order not to receive the consequences of witchcraft. Abigail shows power in the play by influencing the girls and what to say and do. She threatened all the girls she will hurt them if they open their mouth and say the truth. Abigail threatens, “Let either one of you breathe a word, or the edge of the other thing and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will being a pointy reckoning that will shutter you.”(Act 1).
From hearing a prophecy to committing murder, Macbeth develops a different character throughout the play. That could say Macbeth let a few words from the ‘witches’ puppet him. He was not the only one who was controlled; Lady Macbeth let Duncan’s death take over her, and drive her to insanity. To lose sleep, and going crazy, Lady Macbeth let her guilt eat her alive little by little. From a happy marriage to the Macbeths' no longer having love in their relationship and only having fear, guilt and hunger for power.
Putnam claims that “There is a murdering witch among us, bound to keep herself in the dark. Let your enemies make of it what they will, you cannot blink it more” (16). Putnam is yet another powerful male figure in Salem Betty has taken a grip over in the town. He, in this quote, truly believes that the devil is among the town of Salem based on Betty’s current condition. Reverend Hale, encouraging Tituba to give more names of witches, tells her to look at Betty’s “god- given innocence; her soul is so tender; we must protect her; Tituba; the Devil is out and preying on her like a beast upon the flesh of a pure lamb.
Reverend Hale's last attempt to save Proctor is to try to have Elizabeth convince Proctor to confess. Proctor strongly considers it but tears the confession paper up as he does not want to ruin his family name. Hale, defeated, weeps in prayer as Proctor is sent to hung. Reverend Hale's downfall in the novel was his quick assumption that there was witchcraft in Salem. Everyone's fear of the unknown and the chance of witches being present in Salem caused many deaths due to jumping to conclusions.
They mock him, taunting him about how far he has fallen. He responds in anger, wanting to hear more prophecies. He obviously feels more entitled now, and his ambition has thoroughly succeeded in corrupting him to the point of no return. He is now king; his friend (though, in his eyes as of late, his enemy,) Banquo, is dead and out of the way; and he is on a mission to kill any others who stand in his way and jeopardize his crown. The witches inform him that none of women born will kill him, but Macbeth still insists that he will kill not only Macduff, but his entire family and staff, just to be on the safe side of things.
“Now look you… I will come to you in the black of some terrible night… bring a reckoning that will shudder you… I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down”. In order to save herself she did extreme things; she made people fear of her, that way people would obey. In act II, she accused Elizabeth Proctor of witchery; she said that Elizabeth used poppets to damage her. Abagail Williams had a horrible obsession with John Proctor; she invented false testimonies in order to keep away Elizabeth form John. The fact is that because her name was pure in Salem, almost everybody trusted her.
When did I become tainted with these forbidden wants and desires? Oh,wait, that’s right, the witches, they told Banquo and I a prophecy which would vere my righteous path, down to the crimson tainted river of blood and agony.I was to become the King of Scotland, hah. Looking back on it now, I should never trust such evil entities, no matter what had come true, once you believe in evil, you eventually become evil. I killed my own kin, my own king,
