While Industrialists imagined America as an economic behemoth, Engineers bridged the breach between reality and Industrialist dreams. The result, massive railways that connected local economies by crossing: rugged terrain, valleys, plains, and rivers. Although railway bridges fulfilled utilitarian goals and lacked esthetic value, they captivated the American morale and inspired American politicians.
