“Frequent exposure to media reports of police abuse or corruption is a strong predictor of perceptions of misconduct and supports the belief that is common.” (France-Respers 1). But unfortunately, it also brings me disheartened feelings. Recently, I was on twitter and I stumbled across a video of a young white male who was roughly about twenty to twenty-five years of age who was being handled so aggressively by about six officers while he was NOT resisting. The act itself is disappointing but more importantly I was bothered by the fact that there are many white individuals who fall victim to acts of police brutality but they don’t receive as much attention because they are not minorities (especially as much as african americans and latino’s do). “Deaths of whites at the hands of law enforcement typically receive less attention, even when the case is shrouded in controversy.” (Richardson, 1).
Natalie Calderon History 240 Brian D. Behnken December 7, 2015 The Latino Threat The Latino Threat is a book written by Leo R Chavez and anthropologist who is a professor at University of California, Irvine in which he analyzed the threats that Latinos face in America by its society. In his book Chavez discussed that Americans assumed Latinos were a threat because of the stereotypes and prejudices that the media and many other sources had over them. He talks about Americans thinking that Latinos were taking over the Southwest because they refused to learn English, Latinas were having too many babies, were taking American organ transplants, between other topics. Chavez demolishes the assumption that Latinos are a threat by stating actual
On television, magazines, internet, and wherever social media are found, the African-American community is targeted. Black on black crime has decreased because of the white law enforcements on innocent black citizens has increased, causing a racial war and blacks reuniting together forming a black lives matter movement, turning the dream into a nightmare. Because of the majority of people who makes of the nations’ population, the white race is in favor compared to other race in the United States of America, neither which meaning the society will find a way not find fault nor resisting punishing the (white) criminal regardless of the hades crime they have committed. In this century, the black race has developed negative opinions against one another. Apparently, being a certain shade of brown determines expectation everywhere.
In The Essay “The News” Neil Postman demonstrates the problems with News on TV and the Psychology behind it of why our society continues to watch. Postman displayed many points that becuase television news is must appeal to everyone in a short amount of time; the coverage is often shallow and gives a false impression of the world. Neil Postman describes the time restrictions of (22 mins) because of commercials overtaking the news. This reflects “The News” as we know it to become a big piece of entertainment that has nothing to do with the intellectual information that affects our lives. The lack of in-depth look on News nowadays draws an Appearance vs.
Community Action Project We all live in a society where criticism is inevitable. People are afraid to express any pride in their nationality due to the fear of being judged by everyone around them. Racial microaggressions affects one’s ability to freely express their racial backgrounds without the fear of being inaccurately represented. Individuals of different ethnics are assuming what others are like based on their appearances in the media. In popular movies, many of the villains are known to be from different parts of the world while the leading characters are all white.
These shows, such as 2 Broke Girls, Cops, Friends etc. each portrays racism, and classism, we just don’t notice it. The shows Cops have focused its show in lower class areas, never upper class, Friends and other sitcoms always throw in those ‘stereotypical’ jokes that everyone seems to find so funny. These shows prove that we (society) still do not treat everyone equally, and that our justice system continues to use racial profiling and classism as a way of social control. Not only does the book focus on the colonization of blacks, but also of Hispanics and how they are affected.
Stop question and frisk has created a lot of controversy because of the misuse police officer are giving it. Evidence provided by the Huffington Post and the New York Times suggest that many of these stops can be attributed to racial. in a 2011 Statistic given by the Center for Constitutional Rights, show that black and Latinos are disproportionately stopped, black make the 51% of the people being stop and frisk and Latinos/Hispanic make the 33%. But, this not enough to say that stop question and frisk is not a useful tactic and that is not a good tool for officer and community safety. Journalists have mentioned about an increase in murder in New York City, and one of the reasons to this is that the city has settled the practice of stop question and frisk because "the department 's stop and frisk tactics were unconstitutional" said the judge Shira A. Scheindlin of Federal District Court.
In the article, Mexican American woman’s reaction to Donald Trump by Christina Arreola, an interviewed a Mexican American woman, Carmen felt “terrified” when she heard trump’s infamous speech about the Mexican immigrants. Trump’s word discouraged her and made her feel ashamed of her heritage because her parents were also illegal immigrants. Not only Trump has discouraged people who inherited illegal immigrants, but he falsely blamed Mexicans for bringing the “criminals.” There are large populations of Latino-Whites that don’t speak Spanish in America and they are not criminals. To millions of Latinos, mixed race, and blond-haired whites, their home is both Mexico and America. They enjoy all of the same rights and privileged as every other Mexican and American citizens.
Trump also is very vocally racist and sexist. He has made many vulgar comments to women on his show, “The Apprentice,” and has made many tasteless comments about liberal women and their personal life on social media. which should be no one’s business but their own. He said, on national TV, during a press conference, that Mexicans are rapists and drug dealers. He has claimed that “laziness is a trait in blacks.” Personal views shouldn’t become a factor in what decisions presidents make, but they obviously will influence Trump- and he wants the world to know.
The general public opposed Barry Bonds record due to the influence of media giving out tampered information. Racial profiling became evident when the talk of Aaron Rodriguez was on pace to break Bonds record. Aaron Rodriguez and Barry Bonds have many things in common such as using performance enhancing drugs (AKA steroids) and having a strong batting arm. But the only thing that seemed to be different was their color. And like the author states “Race permeates
Gallagher article on “Miscounting Race: Explaining Whites’ Misperceptions of Racial Group Size” has a large influence on the medias racial perception, and political identities and racial hypervisibility. In the media “the perception that blacks were overrepresented in the media, particularly on local television news… ” (Gallagher 2014, 42). This relates affects not only one black person in a certain area but everyone in that community. “Misinformation about changing demographic patterns in the United States seem to play a role in the perception of racial group size. What has been lost on the general public is that this great racial sea change wherein whites are no longer a majority will not occur until 2050.” (Gallagher 2014.47) we see how the social imagination affects people in every
Living in this beautiful country I have come to realize that our government feels as if they need to make up for our past political parties mistakes. Although they had good intentions, it has only made it harder only the majority of the population. America is unknowingly judgmental towards any select person that has a belief or opinion that is not supported at the current time. As an example people have seen the harsh behavior gay people have faced over the last hundred years so they decided to make their beliefs the most important.
But even though so many view police as just liars and racist pigs, When asked. “Would you approve of your child participating in the law career?” Many said Yes 59-12%, despite how ironic this is. Many parents think that their child would make a difference in the system. But if you think about this the racist image of the police is strongly influenced by politics. A majority of democrats (53%) believe the police unfairly target minorities.
