A. Describe the roles of nurses in critiquing studies to determine the research evidence that is ready for use in practice. Nurses are usually the healthcare workers that are most intimately involved in the daily care of patients. The nursing practice is always evolving and changing, and nurses rely on research to give them new ways to improve their care. Therefore, nurses critique studies to determine when it is ready to be implemented pragmatically. They will critique the study and results to determine if more questions need to be answered, if the research is thorough and unbiased, and if the data is complete. They will ask 10 key questions of articles to determine its viability and relevance to clinical practice. These questions include …show more content…
Discuss the standards used in critiquing qualitative studies: descriptive vividness, methodological congruence, analytical and interpretative preciseness, philosophical or theoretical connectedness, and heuristic relevance. Qualitative studies are critiqued using five general standards (“Critiquing qualitative research,” 2018). Descriptive vividness examines the inclusion of all the necessary descriptive data, such as the experience of collecting it, the thoughts of the research team as they did so, the site of the collections, and the participants. It should allow the reader to feel personally involved in the event. Methodological congruence ensures that the researcher took the appropriate measures to accurately record and represent the data, both procedurally and ethically. It follows the data itself to ensure that the readers examining the data will reach the same or similar conclusions as the research team. Analytical preciseness deals with the process of translating data. It must go through several processes of decision and interpretation, and analytical precision evaluates logical progression of the data transformation. Theoretical correctness is a meta-evaluation of the schema of the study. It ensures clear connections between the data and the framework of the style of research, and that the language is clear, logical, and reflects the data. Heuristic relevance is primarily for the reader. It aims to rid the report of any verbosity or unfamiliar langue. The goal …show more content…
This study shows that improvement and competency have not been improved, despite previous research. Knowing the competency of nurses regarding pulse oximetry is important because it is a part of the vital signs. Knowing how the oximetry device actually works could change the way a saturation percentage is viewed and ultimately the way a patient is cared for. 2. Will the study problem and purpose generate or refine knowledge for nursing practice? This study has the power to provide knowledge not just for PACU nurses, but for all nurses. The author, Harper, works to review quality monitoring and improvement. With the results of the research, education departments can promote learning through classes or online e-learnings. 3. What are the major strengths of the study? A strength of this study would be the variety of educational backgrounds. This shows that no matter the level of education there is still a lack in education related to the pulse oximetry device (Harper, 2004, p. 9). 4. What are the major weaknesses of the study? A weakness of this study is the number of participants. With only nineteen PACU nurses participating, it is hard to say whether this represented each hospitals unit well. Harper did not include information on how many packets were handed out. 5. Did the researchers use sound
With these changes, we as nurses are able to provide the best care possible for our patients. In the BSN program, I learned the importance of having peer reviewed research for validity. Also, I would like to one day take part in a research study at my facility in order to contribute to the advancement of the nursing field. Sound peer reviewed research is very important in the nursing field.
NU 413 Week 9 Discussion Board Post student response to Katie-Lynn Fournier by Kathryn Moultrie Good afternoon Kathie, Enjoyed reading your post, and seeing how other organizations handle the operations of their facility and nursing departments. My biggest concern with improving quality care and patient safety issues in that, the responsibility is not ours alone, our Chief Nurse Executives (CNEs) and Director of Nursing (DON), and senior nursing management staffs to lead the journey Disch J. (2008). I find it overwhelming that the majority of the research literature (studies, surveys and reports believe nursing plays the pivotal role in changing the face of health care and improving quality care and patient safety.
First, a brief summary of the study, including the background, objectives, methods, intervention, findings, and conclusion will be posted in an online nursing forum (INC, 2012). Next, a formal research report with all relevant information listed above, literature review, and evaluation tools used during the study will be presented to the local chapter of the American Nurses Association (ANA). The ANA can assist with disseminating the findings to other members within the organization (INC,
Reflecting on the past seven weeks I have acquired countless knowledge, which I will use to further strengthen my profession as an Advanced Practice Nurse. The course allowed me to think beyond my current practice knowledge and acquired innovative ways to evaluate the situation at hand. The learning objective in program outcome four helps set standards that I will use to guide my clinical practice to meet various healthcare needs. Using the case studies has helped to further enhance my knowledge on disease physiological state, using differential diagnosis, disease manifestations, and clinical presentation. It has also taught me the skills on how to differentiate between similar diagnoses to properly identify the problem and treat the patients.
In the leadership in care delivery course, we were assigned to a hospital to perform clinical hours and provide care to four patients. Additionally, the purpose of this paper is to explain and provide examples on how our patient care included the concepts of Quality and Safety Education for Nursing (QSEN) competencies, delegation, handoff reporting, and a reflection of the clinical experience. Quality and Safety Education for Nursing (QSEN) Competencies QSEN consists of six competencies: patient centered care, quality improvement, teamwork and collaboration, safety, informatics, and evidence based practice. To provide patient-centered care, I had to educate the patient when administering medications on why the patient was taking the medication and side effects. Care had to be individualized with each patient and it included providing respect with his or her decisions in their care.
This is important evidence because it gives us conditions and results of what can happen if patients get lower quality care. Patients’ are not having enough time getting checked up by a nurse, and nurses would miss some diagnostics. Patients are getting sick because of the poor care they are receiving from nurses. The care patients can get is affected by a nurse shortage, “Nursing workload definitely affects the time that a nurse can allot to various tasks. Under a heavy workload, nurses may not have sufficient time to perform tasks that can have a direct effect on patient safety.
Nurses are critical for promoting health in the society. The profession is highly flexible, since they specialize in diverse operations in the medical field. Registered nurses, for instance, are responsible for the administration of medicine and inoculations to patients (American Nurses ' Association, 2000). Additionally, these professionals observe, record, and enlighten doctors of any changes in a patient’s health. Nurses interpret and evaluate diagnostic examinations to determine an individual’s condition, as well as making the necessary adjustments in patient treatment plans on their health progress.
According to Clement (2012), a nursing audit can be defined as a detailed review and evaluation of selected clinical records by qualified professional personnel for evaluating quality of nursing care. There are different types of nursing audits to choose from. A nursing management audit, which is a structured audit that concentrates on the administrative aspect of nurses responsibilities. A retrospective audit which
Healthcare professionals play a role in quality management process by taking accurate patient information using the electronic health record system. Technology with professional knowledge of nursing improves quality of patient care and general quality management process in the healthcare. The baccalaureate nurse involves an integration of nursing knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are fundamental to improving quality and safety of patients in the healthcare
That is to say, the questionnaire that was effectively utilized consists of both open and closed-ended feedbacks. Owing to the quantitative and qualitative nature of the data that was garnered, both techniques were relied upon in the analysis as postulated by Saunders, Lewis and Thornhill (2007). This strategy is opted for principally in the natural sciences and heavily reliant on information that can quantitatively be accounted for. Babbie (2010) opined that surveys, questionnaires, tests of personality, and standardized research instruments are undoubtedly hypothetical scenarios of apparatuses effectively utilized within the quantitative approach perspective. Conversely, Crotty (1998) posited that qualitative approach to research accentuates on systematic protocols and methods, where subjective parameters of the researcher are crafted into the fact findings and its concluding part.
Investing my time in the care of my patient gives the opportunity to not only assist them in a difficult situation, but also to learn more about their diagnosis and the treatment, while comparing it to what we have learned in class. For example, I had a patient that suffered from Sickle Cell Disease and came to the ER during a crisis. Correlating this case to the books and the content learned in class, these patients receive at least 1000 mL of fluids, pain medication, and oxygen. Additionally, I had a patient with meningitis. This individual presented with common symptoms such as nuchal rigidity, muscle pain, fever, and chills.
These three problems are: lack of collaboration and teamwork, staff conflict, and lack of transparent performance appraisal procedures. All of these three broad problems need to be addressed simultaneously to ensure that the unit performs as Barbara expected. As we read in the case, there is a conflict between junior nurses, senior nurses, and PCA 's which lead to ineffective collaboration among them. Junior nurses feels like they don 't get positive feedback from senior nurses. However, senior nurses feel that many junior nurses and PCA 's are in competent and feel overwhelmed to support them.
Nursing assessment has a significant role in providing effective, accurate and safe nursing care in clinical practice. Nursing assessment is the first stage of the Nursing Process. It is used to explore the physical, psychological, spiritual and social aspect of the patient’s life. It is therefore a holistic and systematic guide for nurses to obtain a greater understanding of their patient’s wants and needs. It is the underlying foundation of the process, on which other phases of the process are based upon (Foster & Hawkins, 2005).
Qualitative studies that are Poorly designed or have inadequate reporting
However, critics of qualitative research say it is time consuming, intellectually fatiguing and depends for its success upon the ability of the investigator. But, it is expected of a researcher to act responsibly and professionally to minimise errors especially common in qualitative research. In my case, indeed I had to dedicate valuable time and sobered up to the task of having to understand the different data that came my way. I was as open-minded as possible to avoid biases in the research process. I made sure respondents felt free as much as they could, without creating an artificial outlook or environment that could create a boundary between them and myself, because the artificial environment makes the respondents say what you want to
