By the 19th Century, Ottomanism started to play a crucial role in the Ottoman Empire especially in the period of 1839-1871 with the establishment of Tanzimat period (reorganization). This period strengthened the Ottomanism concept which included new basic reforms to create an Ottoman Constitution. Ottomanism concept was basically consisted the full equality of non-muslims especially in the Balkan region of the Empire. The first democratic structural steps were taken during the Ottoman times. After the constitutional monarchy had been established in 1876, in the first parliament, the members were elected from the all Ottoman provinces and represented there. In fact, this government was quite successful for putting the human rights legislation in practice and getting Turkey more closer to the policies of the European Union. Due to the economic crisis that broke out in 2002, a new election was held to form a new governance. As a result, the era of the conservative religious Justice and Development party (AKP) under the lead of Recep Tayyip Erdogan started in Turkey. In 2002, with 34.3% of the votes, Justice and Development party (AKP) came to the head of the government in Turkey. Basically AKP had grown with the idea of Islamism since its foundation 14th August 2001. The party itself is a social conservative political party and their ideology is supporting “conservative democracy” idea. Since 2002, the Justice and Development party has been ruled by Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He used to be the prime minister of the Republic of Turkey from March 2003 until August 2014 and the current president from August 2014 until nowadays. As a president, even though he claimed that he was going to take a neutral role in the politics of Turkey, he clearly breached his promise and continued to govern the Justice and Development
