The University of Winnipeg has approved a requirement that all undergraduate students complete one Indigenous studies course in order to graduate, which has left some asking whether the University of Manitoba should do the same. The goal of the requirement at the University of Winnipeg is to develop “mutual respect and understanding” (Narine, 2015) between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. One way that the Indigenous studies requirement would aid in combating racism is through diminishing harmful stereotypes that surround Indigenous peoples. According to Maclean’s, “one in three prairie residents believe that many racial stereotypes are accurate” and that 52% of prairie residents also agree that “Aboriginals’ economic problems are mainly their fault” (Macdonald, 2015) in a poll conducted by the Canadian Institute for Identities and Migration. Canada has had a long history of racism against and the dehumanization of Indigenous peoples, including but not limited to the residential school system and the more recent issue of the high rates of Indigenous children in Child and Family Services (CFS). It is estimated that 150,000 Indigenous children were placed into residential schools from 1874 to 1996 (Fee, 2012) and it is believed 6,000 of these children died while attending, although this number is difficult to determine due to the government ceasing recordings of deaths in residential schools around 1920. It seeks to educate those on the history, culture and rights of Indigenous peoples that most are not aware of. The hope is that through this education, issues such as stereotypes will be corrected and that it will promote healthier interactions between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people leading into the future. Therefore, it does not seem unfair to suggest that if the University of Manitoba were to follow suit and introduce an Indigenous studies requirement, it would do more good than harm, especially in pacing the way for a better future in terms of acceptance and healthier
To understand why the Indian Act has had such a negative impact on Aboriginal women in society today we must observe the previous affect it has had on Aboriginal women during the post colonial time period. The Indian Act is a law that European settlers created in 1876 in order to assimilate the Aboriginal population, and therefore we can deem that the Indian Act is law that was created in the post colonial generation. The Indian Act was a law put in place by the Canadian government to intentionally discriminate against the Aboriginal people in order shrink the number of Aboriginals in Canadian society and to reduce the obligations the government had (Cannon and Sunseri 2011: 90). It was very hard for Aboriginals to overcome the discrimination they faced from the Indian Act because major politicians like Sir. John A MacDonald, Nicholas Flood Davin, and Duncan Cambell Scott despised the Aboriginals in Canada and therefore supported the Indian Act in order to assimilate and destroy the culture of the Aboriginal population (ibid: 312-313).
The atrocities that the children of residential schools had to endure is not something that can be ignored, just as the lessons these children learned, like shame, humiliation, hate, compassion, and forgiveness cannot be overlooked (Borrows 486-7). Due to the significant Indigenous demographic within Nunavut, these Indigenous-specific policies made the Liberals appear as the obvious choice, in comparison to the Conservatives who made no promises to the Indigenous population. Before the Indian Act most of the young members of the First Nations followed the traditions and beliefs of previous generations, however, this changed with the introduction of Residential schools through the Indian Act. By 1948, there were 78 schools operating with nearly 10,000 students enrolled. This education network was established by the government but was controlled by the Catholic, Anglican and Presbyterian churches. The objective of this school system was to teach young aboriginals how to integrate themselves into the “normal” Canadian life. In other words, this whole system was a major cultural genocide.

Throughout the process, public community hearings were held, private statements were collected, expert panels were formed, and written archive records and existing studies on the problem were reviewed. This process aims to find the truth by gathering many stories from many people to have the truths woven together to show the world what violence really looks like for Indigenous women and girls in Canada. The National Inquiry reached out to put families first throughout the process rather than others who hold power, as well as being informed about the trauma encountered and making sure there is no further harm, and decolonizing where in they center Indigenous ways of being, knowing, and doing. The idea of cultural safety emerged from this process as a foundational principle of wellness.

Colonialism has been a huge factor that has and will attempt to make aboriginal people conform to new cultural norms. Residential schools have been the most well-known way as to how colonialism affected these people. What society is not aware of is the cruelty of hospitalization of aboriginals, where unethical procedures took place using them as subjects without consent. As Dr Geddes stated during his lecture, the Canadian health care system has racism embedded in it. Stripping indigenous people of the proper health care which they have the right to receive, but kept from due to their racial status.
With the country’s population being around 33 million in 2011 (“Stats Canada,” 2011), and over 1,400,000 of those people were aboriginals making them about 4.3% of the Canadian population. (“CBC News,” 2014) This high percent of aboriginals in Canada impacts many other statistics as well, there are even times where the statistics for aboriginal peoples out number the non-aboriginals. However this is not always a positive aspect. For example, the suicide rate for aboriginal males in Canada is 126 per 100,000 compared to 24 per 100,000 for non-Aboriginal males.
In this case, the Aboriginals are being oppressed to benefit the “White” society. The elements of oppression – Historical, Ideological, Institutional, and Cultural have been clearly proven throughout the years and these elements continue to prove the oppression of First Nations in Canada until present day.
Canada is known for its amazing healthcare and it is considered one of the best in the world. In Canada, healthcare is ‘universal’ to its citizens under the Heath Care Act. However, not everyone has equal access to healthcare, Aboriginals being some of them. Aboriginals have trouble getting the access they need because of socio-economic status, geography, lack of infrastructure and staff, language or cultural barriers an more. Aboriginals on reserve face many barriers when it comes to access to healthcare, they include cost, language, distance, climate, education and more.
I particularly agreed with the authors’ argument about blending cultural and academic knowledge (McKinley & Brayboy, 2005, p. 435). I think it is institution’s responsibility to respect their cultural knowledge but also provide appropriate academic knowledge, relative to Indigenous students to be able to actively engage in reciprocal learning with their cultural knowledge, which, then, adds value to their survivance practice. I find that this piece opened up a new way of looking at the challenges which Indigenous students encounter and the ways to move forward with the situation through changing the perception of education not only from Indigenous students, but also from the perspectives of non-Aboriginal members in institutions by providing a way to
