Slaves were pushed and chastised simply because of the color of their skin, something they had no control over. This book gave no limitations to the image of how slaves were treated. It showed in great detail how they were beaten and tortured by their masters and the white men around them. The details depicted in this story will teach you just how hard it was to have darker skin in the 1800’s. In Douglass’ life as a slave, he endured a lot of suffering from slaveholders, overseers, and slave mistresses.
In the 1700s, around half of the people living in the southern colonies were slaves. They were frequently forced to do jobs, and would work under their master’s order all day and night. They worked all kinds of jobs, they could for example be field hands in the tobacco fields or house slaves. House slaves were often treated better than the field slaves, and while field slaves often were whipped, house slaves used to do chores around the house or help their master in his trade shop. Field slaves were usually given one set of clothing that was supposed to last a year.

A Raisin in the Sun: Strength of Family Racism, segregation, oppression, and poverty; these are some of the struggles that black people in 1950’s America had to deal with every single day. That’s what the book “A Raisin in the Sun” focused on. This book was written about a closely-knit black family who had to get through new and difficult challenges, especially when it came to the racism that ran rampant through America at the time and their own attempts to escape the seemingly bottomless pit of poverty. These struggles forced this black family to stay together, even in times when the family seemed to be coming apart at the seams. This wonderful book had a couple main themes, but three of the biggest themes were racism, the importance of family, and poverty.
Furthermore, the black slaves suffered severe physical and mentally as “the crew often neglected to feed the salves, empty the tubs used for excrement, take slaves on deck for exercise, tend to the sick, or remove the dead” and were tightly packed in vertical shelves (Hine 32). The captains of the ship completely disregarded the rights of the slaves as they were treated as “black cattle” (James Irving, letter to Mary Irving 1786) and that the “kings and principal men bred Negroes for sale as [they] [did] cattle” (Alexander Falcolnbridge, An Account of the Slave Trade on the Coast of Africa 1790). This demonstrates the crude treatment the slaves encountered whilst on the ships as they were often compared to cattle. Slaves played a huge role in the early American colonies because “communities were designed around slavery”. Slaves were commonly seen and worked throughout all colonies but were heavily used in the South. The Southern slaves were “forced to work under harsh conditions for long hours”. The majority of the men worked on plantations doing manual labor and the often times women were house servants. Their punishments could included being beaten, starved, tortured and or killed.
In Olaudah Equiano’s narrative, he demonstrates an oppressive tone in order to create sympathy for the slaves. For example, when the slaves pack onto the ships, the author describes, “[that] the stench…was so intolerably loathsome…it was dangerous to remain there” (Equiano 45). The diction Equiano uses such as, “stench” and “intolerably loathsome” leads to an increased amount of sympathy for the slaves suffering in the horrendous conditions. Equiano illuminates the dehumanization of the black slaves by describing the atrocities of where they survive. Both poor whites and free African Americans encountered many difficulties in the South. To start, around 30 to 50 percent of all southern whites were landless. Poor whites were given limited opportunities due to slaves working their jobs. Because the poor white people had limited opportunities, many had to search for work such as working as a farm laborer at harvest time and being a tenant farmer. Many of the poor white men and women worked beside black slaves in the fields.
