After they realize that the assailant is one of them, and not someone hiding on the island, (on page 165) the first character introduced, Justice Lawrence Wargrave, said that “I reiterate my positive belief that of the seven persons assembled in this room one is a dangerous and probably insane criminal… From now on, it is our task to suspect each and every one amongst us.” While they do this, they believe that the murderer is one of the others (which is true), but their guesses are usually incorrect. During this time, it was common for local disputes to escalate to a more national level, due to the ineptness of King Henry VI, however this is not to say that the Wars of the Roses was simply an escalation of private feuds, but rather the result of raising political tensions on a national level due to the illness of Henry VI, and the nobility around him during this time, and foreign policy, notably the end of

Not only does this sudden disappearance startled the characters of Vivaldi and Bonarmo but confuses the reader as well. The suddenness deployed by Radcliffe in this text regarding the disappearing monk confuses the reader as we, and the characters, are left to ponder whether the monk is a spectre or not. Radcliffe uses the technique in a way that suggest the powers of supernatural forces are at play, bringing about the heart stopping terror that stops Vivaldi in his tracks.

Specifically, the film well represents power and corruption among the order, as well as the influence the hierarchy has on the order’s understanding of controversial topics. The Name of the Rose’s primary focus is within the story and its concepts. The film is shot pretty straightforwardly, as there are no grand effects or stylizations.
The Wars of the Roses, commonly called the War of the Roses, started in 1455 and lasted until 1485. The wars were between the House of Lancaster and the House of York, both houses were descendants of King Edward III, and both houses wanted control of the throne. The wars were named after the rose because the House of Lancaster’s symbol was the red rose, while the House of York’s symbol was the white rose. There were many different reasons why the battles began but the main are because the Lords and Dukes of the time had their own armies, the mental health of the Lancaster king Henry IV, and the connections of both houses to King Edward III.
