I read a book called The Selection. It’s about a place called Illéa and there everyone is categorized by a caste, a number one through ten, which signifies how poor or rich you are. At the very top, which is number one, is the royal family which consists of the King, Queen, and Prince whose name is Maxon. If you are a one through four you’re able to live comfortably, but if you’re a five through ten you tend to have a harder time making money and getting food on the table for your family. The only way you can become a one is if you marry into the royal family and that’s when the selection comes in. The selection is a contest to win the prince over and became his wife and every girl dreams of it, at least most girls. This book mainly features a girl named America Singer. America and her family are fives which make …show more content…
The first thing they were told was on the second day they would meet Prince Maxon, That night America felt trapped in her room and all she wanted to do is get some fresh air but they could leave the castle. She begged the guard to let her out but he said no, until Maxon was near and said to let her out. She was shocked because she thought he would be extremely snotty and rude. He started talking to her and she realized he was a lot nicer than she thought. They hit it off immediately but they didn’t tell anyone how they met before they were suppose to.. I noticed that Maxon liked her right away. I think it’s because America didn’t care what he thought about her, she was just being herself. Over the course of the contest more girls were sent home, but America wasn’t. I was honestly surprised because I didn’t think they would get along. America thought this would never happen but she started falling in love with Maxon and she forgot about Aspen, but she will have to win the competition in order to be with Maxon forever. You’ll have to read the book to figure out what happens to
Reading Journal #4: Among The Barons The book that I’m currently reading is called “Among The Barons”. The author of this book is Margaret Peterson Haddix. This book is part of the “Shadow Children” series and is the fourth book from the series. The genre is mystery. Among the Barons is from Luke’s perspective.
My group, the Lects, is similar to the Third Estate in the Reign of Terror and the American army in the book, Night. First, we are similar to the Third Estate in the Reign of Terror because both groups are upstanders. The Perpetrator was treating us terribly, so we took action and began advocating for equal rights in society. In the Reign of Terror, the King was treating the citizens of France, especially the Third Estate, with no respect, did not regard starvation, and increased taxes, so the Third Estate started to protest for equal rights among all the estates. In this situation, the King can be categorized as the Perpetrator and the Third Estate can be categorized as the Upstander.
Whenever law ends, tyranny begins (John locke). In our government laws are made by a group of people who meet and develop solutions for problems. They get the approval of different people in charge, and the words becomes law. But what happens when there is no president elected by the people, and instead a family that passes the power generation to generation, thinking only what is best for them and only them, as they know no better. That moments is when things turn bad and problems start to appear, here and there, everywhere.
“For all men being originally equals, no ONE by BIRTH could have a right to set up his own family in perpetual preference to all others for ever, and though himself might deserve SOME decent degree of honours of his contemporaries, yet his descendants might be far too unworthy to inherit them” (Paine). The descendent of the throne may be a fool and have no idea how government works leaving the inhabitants defenseless and at a disadvantage as rival empires or nation can attack and usurp the throne and lead to turmoil or anarchy. It also goes against the concept of “all men are created equal,” being royal by birth is a straight contradiction and creates further unnecessary division. “Another evil which attends hereditary succession is, that the throne is subject to be possessed by a minor at any age; all which time the regency, acting under the cover of a king, have every opportunity and inducement to betray their trust” (Paine). A minor as the ruling king may have no grasp onto what they’re doing and maybe swayed against doing well for society.
“The Three Sovereigns for Sarah” movie was based off events in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. There were already problems with everyone in the town because everyone wanted more property than they owned. They were without a reverend for a while and ended up voting for a man that nobody really liked. What they needed was a reverend like Reverend Parris. Parris had two daughters, a wife, and a slave to watch his kids and make food along with some other tasks.
‘The consolidation of royal authority, in the years 1487-1509, was due to Henry VII’s control over the nobility.’ Explain why you agree or disagree with this view. It can be argued to a certain extent that the consolidation of royal authority for Henry VII, in the years 1487-1509, was a result of control over the nobility. The challenge lied in the ability to decrease their power without alienating them whilst removing their position of threat. However, there were other contributory factors in Henry’s consolidation of his royal authority, such as his diplomatic skills in dealing with foreign powers and the indispensable use of royal finances.
These areas consisted of power and how to prepare for it, social clubs, the debutante season, and marriages. Although three of these only contain minor differences from other social classes, the upper class benefits greatly from them. These differences can be anywhere from how extravagant a wedding and its reception are, to having a special ceremony for transitioning into adulthood, or owning a membership to a prestigious country club, simply by having a high income and being a part of the upper class. They may be minor at first glance, but these can shape relationships with political figures and high-ranking business professionals. Then there’s power, the most influential thing an upper-class citizen can have possess.
The story The One is about America Singer winning the selection and falling in love with the prince, Maxon Schreave. After previous books, the two’s love for eachother deepened more and more during the selection. Because of the different government in Illea, Maxon was unable to go out and find his love, so he had to bring it to him. After 36 girls were narrowed down more and more, Maxon and America worked through the journey of jealousy, other relationships, and secrets. They managed to pick each other, but only did the two know it when the King and Queen were killed in a rebel attack, and Maxon had to choose.
In Caste by Isabel Wilkerson, I think that the main idea is that America is collapsing and our new generations are supposed to fix it. To me, the message of this passage is that our ancestors have put up this system of hierarchy that tore them apart and is affecting us today. I feel as if this system is what helped cause the present racial problems. Wilkerson says that this hierarchy system is artificial, made to make a group of people feel less than another. Without this system, things might not be the way they are, perhaps America wouldn’t be collapsing.
Jamie Johnson created the documentary film "Born Rich" with the help of other members of affluent families to discuss the privileges of aristocracy. Aristocracy is a privileged, primarily hereditary ruling class, or a form of government controlled by such an elite. The viewer can understand the role of this status group, see the similarities as well as differences we share, and are able to relate. I do not believe all members of society are comfortable with the system of stratification, but we understand the roles that one plays.
You did not have a choice whether or not you wanted to be a peasant(commoner) or you wanted to be one of the royals. Another example I've be giving is when we humans were still discovering the aspect of communication we only knew our family and maybe that was it.
Social class played a key role in the Elizabethan Age; without social hierarchy society would have fallen apart, the people did not know of anything else other than the role of classes. Each class had different situations of life, some were wealthy and had nice homes while others were poor and living off of the streets. The class rankings were given to each individual by situations such as birth, fame, wealth, and known skills(“Elizabethan Era.”). One could only move up a class by the Queen's approval, obtaining sudden wealth, going into debt, losing your job, and many other specific conditions(“Elizabethan Era - The Lost Colony.”). For instance, marriage between two people from separate classes could alter social class and was often frowned upon.
Shanti Gurung History 101 Final Exam Professor Montague 12/06/2015 1. As some 16th and 17th c. leaders sought to strengthen their control over both the legislative and administrative machinery of their respective kingdoms, others witnessed the destruction of absolutism as their principle governing philosophy. What obstacles did English royalty face in their effort to establish an absolute monarchy in the early decades of the 17th century? (Hint: Remember the tactics monarchs employed to achieve absolutism.)
An absolute monarch can be defined as a ruler who rules without any interference from the nobles, having complete, utter and unrestricted rule over his people. Louis XIV of France was a key model of an absolute monarch during the time seen as a man to whom there was no equal intellectually, militarily or physically. His absolute monarchy was one of the most successful during the Age of Absolution, having the longest rule of any monarch in Europe. The king's rule was extremely successful due to his control over both the nobility and his own people, the massive and powerful army that he embarked on creating for his nation as well as the revenue he attained through his taxation of his people and use of mercantilism. France has not since or prior
Members of the richest family in the world, the Rothschild family, have been controlling money and politics worldwide since the early 1800’s. Who is Rothschild?
