Is being an introvert a good thing? Introversion is characterized as being inwardly energized. Although approximately *50% of the population is introverted, it is not considered to be a desirable trait. However, is it an advantage or a disadvantage? To help me unearth this truth, two short stories dealing with highly internalized characters will be discussed. “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and “The White Heron” have been selected. Here is a brief summary of both stories. “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ follows the reclusive Walter Mitty as he lives through “ one of his days”. He imagines himself as a brave soldier facing combat, a world famous surgeon, a master shot on trial, an army pilot and finally a man facing a firing squad. In each of his fantasies he is confident, brave, assertive, and well-liked by the ladies.” …show more content…

If I were able to have dinner with Walter Mitty from James Thurber 's “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” I would have to say yes. I have three main reasons to say yes and many a person may say no. I however may find his company enjoyable and much like my own. I would also have to see the way he looks at the world.

Tilley about Sylvia knowing about birds to convey that the stranger was willing to do anything he could to get the heron and that he has his own greed to overcome. This conversation gives background information about the characters and foreshadows Sylvia's knowledge and internal conflict about telling the man about the heron. The discussion begins with Mrs. Tilley giving some knowledge about Sylvia. According to Mrs. Tilley, “There ain’t a foot o’ ground she don’t know her way over, and the wild creaturs counts her one o’ themselves” (Jewett436). These details tell the audience that Sylvia has prior knowledge.
”A White Heron”, a short tale by Sarah Orne Jewett, is about a young girl named Silvia who lives with her grandmother in the rural areas of New England. The conflict between humans and nature is one of the main struggles in this short narrative. As the story progresses, Sylvia is revealed to have a strong connection to the natural world since she spends her days exploring the woods and studying the animals that live there. Even when Sylvia is said to be around nine to ten years old, she is portrayed as being one with nature, with the ability to recognize and distinguish between various bird species in the wilderness. Her relationship with nature was later tested as a young hunter approached her, requesting shelter for the night and seeking
Comparative Essay The word belonging is defined as “hav[ing] the right personal or social qualities to be a member of a particular group” by The Oxford Pocket Dictionary. The Black Balloon and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty are two narratives that deal with the theme of belonging and acceptance. Ishan Datt November 23, 2014 Ms. Panousis Period 6 An Unknown World In the novel, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, by James Thurber, an average man, Walter Mitty, dreams of the vast mysteries of life and imagines great stories of himself as a commander, surgeon and defendant in a court case. The story uses several rhetorical strategies such as juxtaposition, imagery and dramatic irony in order to exemplify the theme of the innate nature for better understanding oneself and living life to the fullest.
Extroverts can be some of the best people you meet. They have plenty to offer and thrive at the attention of others. However, being introverted can be just as great. In a society where being extroverted is the ideal, it can be very difficult to be an introvert. Susan Cain argues in her Ted Talk, “The Power of Introverts”, that introverts can share many brilliant ideas with the world and should be encouraged and celebrated for who they are.
In the film, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the viewers are introduced to the main character, Walter Mitty. From the beginning, Walter’s actions and words can lead one to infer that his character is painfully shy, awkward and quiet. In combination with his awkwardness and shyness, he continually has these moments where he enters “his own world,” and fantasizes about the things he’s too timid to do or that he finds heroic. This is especially unusual to his peers and co-workers who try to converse openly with him.
In contrast, Walter Mitty in "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," by James Thurber is an example of an anti-hero. Mitty was a hero in his mind only. Walter Mitty spent most of his adult life daydreaming; he felt trapped in his world, by his unfulfilling job and nagging wife. In his daydreams, Mitty is the stereotypical hero: intellectual and saved the lives of those around him. He is considered an anti-hero because in real life he was unwilling to express how he felt and got lost between his dreams and reality.
Throughout time, people have been using their imagination as a way of refuge, where they can run away from the problems that come with being in the real world. This issue is well developed throughout the short story “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, written by James Thurber. The short story follows a middle aged man, Walter Mitty, as he goes through fantasies which involve him in situation that are far from his reality. People use imagination to put themselves in situation where they posses certain qualities or a lifestyle which they lack in the real world. Throughout the short story, Walter escapes into event-triggered fantasies in which he can do or be anything he wants to be.
