A famous person once said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Who you are today – whether you are successful or not, happy or unhappy, loved by many or despised by many – is basically the result of all the habits that you have acquired throughout your life. You indeed become what you repeatedly do. Naturally, if you want to have a good, comfortable, happy, and successful life, you will need good habits to back it up. One of the secrets of successful people is that they formed winning habits, while unsuccessful people can attribute their failures to bad habits. Bad habits are just that: Bad. By its obvious meaning, bad habits have negative effects on your life. Take smoking as an example. It is considered a bad habit, and continually doing it may result to health problems in the future. Others have the bad habit of overspending whenever they go shopping, and that can lead to accumulated debts. Some have the bad habit of gossiping about other people day in and day out. Triggers set off your bad habits. What instigates smoking? Stress-related work, peer pressure, coffee, drinking alcohol, date with friends – these are some triggers for smoking. What is yours? For each bad habit that you list down, also write their triggers. Replacing bad habits for each trigger – You have now recognized your bad habits and established their triggers. Now it is time to replace the bad habit that accompanies each trigger with a good habit. The key is to plan ahead so that you will be ready when the triggers happen. When you have the urge to smoke as soon as you wake up, you can do meditation or some breathing exercises instead of smoking. Plan ahead.
