What is the significance of a work of art? Some may ask this question, well the answer is simple. Art, in simplest terms, is communication of the common story, art is a tool used to bring us all together as humans so we can interpret ideas or concepts that seems abstract. Art is important because it allows us to understand each other. Perhaps one of the most influential artist of the 20th century was Salvador Dali. Dali was a Spanish surrealist-artist in the early 1900s, he is best known for his striking and bizarre images in his art work. Dali's most popular work of art is "The Persistence of Memory," this is among the most viewed artworks of all-time. The reason why this painting in particular, is significant is because it can be interpreted …show more content…
In the painting, "The Persistence of Memory," there are a number of different events happening simultaneously. For instance, if we look at each of the clocks, there are three in the frame, and every one of them appears to be melted. One of the ways in which this can be interpreted is by the clocks melting, this is a representation of the speed of time while an individual is in a dream-like state. In the reading "Metaphors we Live By," by the writers of Lakoff and Johnson, the authors talk about the idea of oriental metaphors. To summarize, the article is about the use of metaphor and its importance in everyday life, the way we use it, and how metaphor can be interpreted. Oriental metaphors are used to describe emotions and feelings. For example, if someone is happy, they are considered to be "up." The authors of the reading say, "Such metaphorical orientations are not arbitrary." (Lakoff, Johnson 14). Oriental metaphors specifically focus on physical appearance (Lakoff Johnson 13), so if one were to apply oriental metaphor to the painting one could interpret the melted clocks as depressing. In the case of this painting, if the clocks are depressing in a dream-like state it would not be wrong to assume that the dreamer depicted in this painting is having a nightmare or an uneasy sleep. Another way that visual metaphor can interpret this painting is that clocks in fact just represent time. World famous …show more content…
Another article that gives us a better understanding of visual Metaphor is the article titled "Magic and the Brain," by the authors of Susana Martinez-Conde and Stephen L. Macknik. In summation, the article is about how visual phenomenon such as magic tricks, can fool the audience into thinking something happened even though in reality it seems impossible. This article is important in understanding visual metaphor, which will help us understand "The Persistence of Memory." The red pocket clock in the painting is getting eaten by ants, from what we already know from oriental metaphor, this alludes to Dali's interpretation of time and how abstract the concept
Art is how an artist expresses their own emotion in their artwork. Artwork can express more than just emotion, it can be used as a memorial, awareness, and even art movement. Art movements are very powerful when used correctly. Art movements are created in different medium in art. Elizabeth Sisco has done a graphic design of Chicano movement.

The calendar, clock, and hourglass are symbols of passing time; a reminder of mortality and the impermanence of life (DeWitt et al. 155). The floating objects and the distorted reflection in the mirror create an otherworldly quality to the painting which contrasts with the realism of the objects that represent time (DeWitt et al. 156). In the museum of Salvador Dali over at St. Petersburg, Florida, there were several artworks that caught my attention because Dali’s artwork is genuine in many ways. Although I was impressed by all the artworks, there was a particular one that interested me completely. The artwork is the painting titled “Old age, Adolescence, Infancy (The Three Ages)”. This is a 1940, oil on canvas painting with dimensions 19 5/8 in x 25 5/8 in. The subject matter in this work is the three phases of life.
A metaphor is a figure of speech which makes an implicit, implied or hidden comparison between two things that are unrelated but share some common characteristics. An example of the metaphor she uses would be “hummocks that sink silently into the, slack earth soup” meaning that there is quick sand that drags you down into the nasty muck in the swamp In conclusion Mary Oliver’s “Crossing the Swamp” is an excellent poem to read. It give several examples of visual imagery, metaphors. The way it is organized there is not multiple stanzas, but the poem is one solid
Painting Pictures With Similes Bradbury’s “There Will Come Soft Rains”, is a story from the future about the last house standing after a fire swept through a town. Bradbury uses similes to help readers understand the setting. The middle of the story contains an incredibly vivid simile, “ [a]t four o'clock the tables folded like great butterflies back through the paneled walls” (Bradbury 2).This simile creates imagery and helps the reader picture the setting at that particular point in the story. The simile helps the reader imagine just how the table folds into the wall.
How has artwork transformed itself with the use of metaphors? With many different artwork pieces we have seen through museums or within our textbooks, most would include an underlying meaning. The underlying meaning of the artwork is depicted by the audience and how they would choose to interpret the artwork. For instance, in Frida Kahlo’s self-portrait piece with a thorn necklace and a dead hummingbird, it signifies certain objects to show her own characteristics. Aside from the hummingbird, which could have meant light transcendent or escape, there are also different animals and objects surrounding her in her artwork piece.
In the poem “Afterimages,” Audrey Lorde compares two seemingly different concepts in a metaphor in order to create a specific and significant feeling or idea. This expresses a distinctive identity when the cohesion of two different objects are used in a metaphor. Although most metaphors are commonplace and their meanings easily identified, such as “time is money” in which one “spends” or “earns” time, some metaphors require more thought and analysis in order to convey a specific meaning. In “Afterimages,” Lorde uses the equation EYES =
For many years art has been a method artist 's have used in order to express themselves, and all of their feelings, experiences, and passions. Thus art tells a story, it tells the story of the artist that created it,, which mostly always relates to a vast majority and can be relevant for hundreds, or even thousands of years to come. This is exactly the case when it comes to Hans Baldung Grien’s art piece titled “The 3 Ages of Death” created in 1509-1510. Grien’s piece shows three females of three completely different ages; a child, a young women, and a elderly women.
The many hidden meanings, illusions, and inspirational artistry provide a validation of Dali’s mental state and his thoughts about the Catholic ideology. Although there is no mainstream description of this painting, the painter’s intentions, thoughts, or messages can be analyzed for further understanding of both the painting and the

Artwork is what gives our life much more flavor to it. Life without art would be dull, and lackluster. Everything would be so basic, bare, and simple. Creativity is what really makes artwork amazing. People really enjoy some artists artwork, and are very passionate about it.
The superb use of symbolism in this painting has added complexity to the painting that contains social criticism on politics, on politician, and on culture, resulting in different interpretations from different people. It is also because of this complexity and layering of meanings that makes this painting ever more interesting and much more than what meets the
Early in the novel, the reader gets the impression that the painting is pervaded by the longing for the youth that one has lost as well as the frightening deficiency of human life. In chapter eight this painting is described as: “the most magical of mirrors.” (Wilde 98). The portrait works
1.2 Statement of Significance Art can do lots of things that can create powerful and great changes in ourselves. Artist is someone that is so hard to read if we fail to understand them to interpret the underlying meaning behind their painting because it is their getaway to express their emotions and desires to the community. To accomplish this, the artists are communicating with the society by delivering their messages through their artworks.
