The Silent Film Era
An essay on the Era that came before sound films.
Silent film is the beginning of motion picture studios, with text screens and crafty miming. "Lillian make sure you tell Mr. Griffith you're on the set!" "Make sure the magic lantern is burning brightly!" "Where is the Tramp?" All of these questions shall be answered in due time, for now we start with the beginning of technology in cinema before cinema.
The technology behind the film era in the very beginning was called a thaumatrope which was introduced into society in the 19th century, an object which had two pictures on both sides of the device was twirled to reveal a whole new picture through a process of the brain called persistence of vision. Chaplin became a worldwide icon through his screen persona "The Tramp" and is considered one of the most important figures in the history of the film industry. His career spanned more than 75 years, from childhood in the Victorian Era until a year before his death in 1977, and encompassed both adulation and controversy. The controversy was notably realized in the role he played as Adolf Hitler in "The Great Dictator" in which he was accused as a communist sympathizer when he was simply satirizing the man! Chaplin was a man of poverty and hardship when he was young and at the age of 14 in London, he witnessed his mother being dragged off to a mental institution. Charlie was a genius when it came to slapstick and pathos which made his films especially iconic. His films are known for storylines concerning social and political themes where his characters struggle with adversity. In the film "In the Pawn Shop" Charlie plays a gentleman who is a new employee at a local pawn shop. A silent funny at the least it is quite the interesting film from personal viewing. Anna May Wong was the first Chinese American movie star to be recognized as a great actress. From "Daughter of the Dragon" to "Shanghai Express" she is quite the beauty queen. Another actress of non American birth to rise to stardom is Vilma Bánky. Who was an actress from Hungary, spreading from Budapest all the way to France. Known for being the damsel in distress in "The Son of The Sheikh" or being the lead lady in "The Winning of Barbara Worth" she is quite the resilient
Many films of the silent movie era are melodramas, which was a term used back then purely as a descriptive word to describe a movie and not a ‘negative’ term the way we use the term today. Chaplin’s film is a melodrama that invokes the emotions of his audience. Some elements of melodrama are present in Chaplin’s film The Gold Rush, the characteristics of a melodrama aid in analysing how melodramatic a silent movie is. An element of melodrama is, a situation - an occurring conflict in the film created by the screenwriter to evoke an intense emotional response from the viewers.
Leslie Nielsen, who is a twenty century famous comedian. He was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. At the end of World War II, in order to stay away from the war, he entered the Canadian National Academy of Fine Arts. After graduation he came to New York, and starred in the 150 set live TV series. He was in the mid-50s of last century to the development of Hollywood.
Many Americans enjoyed the new films because they provided joy and laughter after the recent war. Most of the films during this time were silent with some background music like a piano accompanying them, but it wasn’t until 1923 when the first movie with an actual soundtrack was produced (“1920s films”). Movie ticket sales went from 50 weekly in 1920 to 90 million weekly in 1929 (“digital history”). New movies were coming out and each was more advanced than the last with new movie stars and ideas influencing the fashion and culture of America. The American people became obsessed with movies and attending the theater became a regular weekend thing to do (Hanson).
Despite some issues, The Gilded Age, or Industrial era, overall had a great impact on America. During this time, the economy saw a great increase, people were given new opportunities such as jobs, and the popularity of America increased globally. I really enjoyed watching "The Gilded Age", and found it very educational. I found the meaning of the name of the documentary interesting, the fact that America put off this image that they were perfect but behind the image were various issues. I guess you could say this proves to never judge a book by its cover.
The industrial grime and noise were purified through electrical power, creating a clean and modern space that was free from the social and cultural pollution of city life. In the 1910s, cinema was a form of cultural resistance to the dominant culture, but by the 1920s, Hollywood had used it as a way to promote sanitised electronic spaces and the consumerist and heteronormative values of the dominant culture.
The roaring twenties are exactly as they sound. Many things happened in the 1920 's we made some accomplishments that the U.S. is proud of but with those good times comes hard taking two steps forwards and one step back. The silent generation as one would call it ( people born in the mid 1920 to early 1940) was the generation that started it off for everyone today. With political & social tension, technology, early civil rights movement, popular culture, entertainment and media, and societal. Many of the influential parts of the 1920 's are still used
Charlie Chaplin is an english actor and performer who rose to fame during the silent era. Without a doubt, he had played a major role in Slapstick comedy with the creation of his character know as the tramp. The tramp is always distinguished by his famous bowler hat, baggy pants and his signature little mustache. Over the years he had filmed a countless amount of silent films with his iconic character as the tramp. The Films, “The Immigrant ” and “Gold Rush ” were two of the many films he filmed.
Film dates back all the way to the 1880’s where the first cameras were being produced. It was an exciting time for the whole world with this new technology. Over the years, while the cameras continued to improve, film did as well. The first film came out around 1905 and it turned out to be a huge hit. Through out many years, film improved rapidly and the problems of the world begin to appear in them.
Star Wars is a hugely popular science fiction film, featuring grand battles, alien species, and a mysterious energy called The Force. With seven films in the enterprise, Star Wars is a widely known collection of science fiction films. Following the Sci-Fi genre, Star Wars using far advanced technology throughout the film as common place. Though Sci-Fi films usually follow a more fearful approach to science and technology. Using this logic, Star Wars does not fit the typical Sci-Fi genre.
Increasingly, people all across the country were sharing the same information and enjoying the same pastime. A new American popular culture was emerging which was the Entertainment in the Roaring 20’s. Film was really booming in the 1920’s. So many American citizens would spend 83 cents of every dollar going to see the movies that were out. Movies became a daily part of American society and one of biggest forms of entertainment. The movies themselves were teaching the people how to dress, talk, and to appear “sexy”. The early films during the roaring twenties were silent. The year that films actually had sound in them was in 1927.

Silent movies were almost always accompanied by music, from a multipieced pit orchestra to a single piano or even a guitar. This is why silent film audiences seemed perfectly happy with silent movies. There was also technological difficulty of matching sound with visuals so that everyone in the audience could hear. The problems were synchronisation and amplification. A vitaphone was something that produced the first commercially viable sound system.
The cinematic language that we hear in modern day movies would not be as it is today if we hadn 't had synchronous sound recordings from the beginning of film. Cinematic Language is the systematic method by which movies communicate with the viewer. Some examples of cinematic language are, Mise-en-scène, camera angles, the use of long takes, & depth of field. Barthes theory of Expressionism, the use of lighting techniques, montage and elaborate props push to make The Wizard of Oz appear to be a spectacle of realism.
Ángela Bernardo (March 10, 2016), reviewed what she thought were the 7 most important advancements in technology that have revolutionized the Film Industry. In her article, she claims that two very important technology advancements wherein the color and sound aspects of a film. During the age of silent films live music would be played during the film in the theatre. The live music, which was usually played on an organ, added a dramatic effect to the movie.
