The building of a nation is not a simple process, it make take years of effort before a country may be successful labelled as a nation. The definition of a nation varies accordingly, as such in this essay, I take on the assumption that a country may be considered a nation as long as the citizens are united as one with a common goal and common national identity. In the making of the Singapore nation, there were many external factors involved. One important event in Singapore’s history was the Japanese Occupation that happened during the year 1942 to 1945. The British were defeated easily because they were distracted with the diplomatic crisis happening in Europe, namely the second world war. The takeover of the Japanese meant that many changes were made in Singapore, for instance the education system. As the British returned after the surrender of Japan, they were left with a pile of mess and chaos that needed organisation. The Malayan Union was launched to reorganise the system however it mainly cater to the Malays as well as those who reside in Malaya. Singapore, which was predominantly made up of Chinese was excluded to prevent any possible conflicts occurring from the overpowering of the Chinese. Hence by year 1965, Singapore gained its independence and this led to the beginning of a new Singapore nation. The separation allow the development of the Singapore nation, with new sets of beliefs and system that concerned the citizens of Singapore, rather than issues such as managing the racial dispute when Singapore was still part of Malaya. The Japanese Occupation years allow for the emergence of an independent Singapore which nobody expected. The separation from Malaya allowed Singapore to start

There are two different wars that both took place during the 1940s. The wars are different because one was the battle between the Americans and the British, and the other was the Japanese giving a surprise attack in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Back then, there were many reasons why our country was involved in fighting their lives in those wars or any other war; one reason could be that the people in Japan were being treated like outcasts. Other reasons might be that there were unfair laws, nobody had rights to do whatever they wanted, or the main reason could be that they did not get along very well and they did not trust each other. They might have thought that they couldn 't work together to form a better economy for the future of our world or for their family and they used to give up really easily and acted like quitters.
This invasion escalated into the Battle of Singapore; British troops were also fighting this battle against Japan. This invasion ended with over 138,000 British killed or captured (Chen). The British troops were defeated in this battle and Prime Minister Winston Churchill considered the British defeat at Singapore “one of the most humiliating defeats of all time” (Winston Churchill). The question now was why. Why did Japan attack Pearl Harbor?
In addition to the detailed accounts of the atrocities themselves, Chang also explores the aftermath of the occupation. She describes the efforts of individuals and organizations to provide aid and support to the survivors, as well as the international response to the events. The author also delves into the impact that the occupation had on international relations, particularly between Japan and China, and how it shaped the political landscape in East Asia for years to

A nation must have land, government and individuals that will be part of said nation. To be able to identify yourself in a nation gives people a sense of belonging and pride, being part of one can take the form of a distinct relationship. Such as, in Canada, getting your citizenship where there is a set population also identifying as Canadians, a government and vast land. Being part of a nation doesn't necessarily need to be a country, being part of the many groups in the indigenous community is equivalent to a nation.
The Battle of Singapore, also known as the Fall of Singapore, was fought in South-East Asia during the Second World War. It occurred when the Empire of Japan attacked the Allied stronghold of Singapore, which was being defended by Australian and British troops. Singapore fell to the Japanese Army on the 15th of February1942, after a conflict, which lasted only a week. Because the British and Australian armies both played significant roles in the fall, and Australia was a dependent territory of Great Britain, Australia’s government and its relationship with Britain were tested severely during and after the Fall of Singapore. This was due to numerous decisions from the British government regarding the importance of Australia’s dense, which included
“The land of the free” turned into a land of undeserved ridicule and confinement for many Japanese, and their descendants still experience the same anger and disapproval. Along with the racial tensions came numerous men and women who volunteered to join the army. The epidemic of patriotism spread throughout the country as the people were unified by a common enemy
It even created its own army by enlisting sepoys, who were Indian officers that supported British control. However, due to the negative impacts of the Sepoy Mutiny, the British removed the British East India Company and began its era of direct rule.
The main focus of the book “Japan’s Total Empire: Manchuria and the Culture of Wartime Imperialism” is how the creation of Manchukuo contributed to shape the culture and a new type of imperialism in Japan from 1931 to 1941. Young calls the Japanese imperialism as “total empire” to describe the empire that has “the mass and multidimensional mobilization of domestic society” (13). Scholars often talk about how the state controlled people and those people were not responsible for the Japanese imperialism (9). However, Young describes state-society relations “the state wields power in its ordering of society, while society exercises power in its shaping of the state” (8) and argues that people were also deeply involved in the process of creating

There are different kinds of ethnic groups in Singapore and most of it being Chinese the rest are Malay and Indian. The president of Singapore is Tony Tan and Singapore is considered to be a republic and is the world’s only Island City State and was settled in the second century.
