Ideal Women in “The Solitary Reaper” and “She was a Phantom of Delight”
In “The solitary Reaper” the poet command his listener to witness a “solitary Highland lass” singing while harvesting in a field by herself. The poet is emphasizing specifically about the real persons music experience in a precious simple setting. “Alone she cuts and binds the grain, and sings a melancholy strain” poet writes highland lass is alone connected to the nature as part of her identity. As she cuts and binds the grain, she is also singing a melancholy strain and the valley overflows with the beautiful, sad sound. She is enjoying nature around her and to express her feelings she is singing a sad song. After that poet orders, “O listen! for the Vale profound” He tells his readers to listen, as well as to image the valley, which is “profound” magnificent and beautiful. Which is “overflowing with the sound.” filled with the sound of the woman 's song. In second stanza speaker compares highland lass voice with Nightingale from ‘Arabian sands’ and cuckoo-bird from ‘farthest Hebrides.’ like the poet is telling his readers that her singing is universal, like a bird’s voice. Even if we do not understand birds singing we admire the sound as a part of nature because we all are connected to the nature, therefore consider the sound of a girl is more delightful than a bird’s voice, it has feelings in it
