The ocean is a beautiful part of the Earth that is home to a large variety of Marine life like plants, animals, and other organisms. Organisms that can not live anywhere else are surviving with what they have but it is destroyed due to trash. Beaches and island, are amazing tourist destinations that help an economy to improve or a beautiful place to live are also being destroyed by trash. Marine littering is what is destroying both ocean and beaches by creating the cause of the destruction, making marine littering and pollution an extremely important issue that needs a drastic solution. Water pollution or marine littering has been affecting marine life due to trash being thrown into the ocean without caring or thinking about the problem that …show more content…
Beaches that were once a paradise are now a destination no man wants to visit. Islands that are home to beautiful creatures are being forgotten and the economy of that community is being destroyed due to all the trash being transported via ocean waves. Elle Hunter a writer for The Guardian wrote a newspaper article about Henderson Island, which is a small abandoned island in the eastern South Pacific Ocean that could have been a beautiful tourist destination or a useful land to live in but instead it is destroyed due to the trash created by populate cities being moved by ocean waves into the shorelines of Henderson Island. Hunter explains that Henderson Island has “the highest density of anthropogenic debris recorded anywhere in the world, with 99.8% of the pollution plastic” and can soon increase more if the ocean keeps depositing trash into its shoreline(Hunter). If all the trash being produced would be deposited to its correct location, means that no trash would be able to reach the ocean or if more people recycle, Henderson Island might have a chance to recover and become a beautiful destination to live in or visit. It may seem impossible to stop this problem, but it does not hurt to try to do the right thing and recycle more and help discover more beautiful places to live …show more content…
Tara John’s TIME Magazine “Ways to Rid the World 's Oceans of Plastic Trash” explain how companies and other organizations or are trying to decrease the amount of trash that is affecting marine life by recycling it and using the trash to built products. In his article, John explains how “ Dell is beginning to create laptop packaging recycled from the litter found on Haitian beaches” which is not only helping the environment by recycling it is clean a land that can be useful (John). The book Marine Litter: A Global Challenge by Ellik Adler, L. Jeftic, and Seba B. Sheavly is about the effects that are caused by marine littering and how organizations all around the world are trying to end it. In the book, the authors have a section about the international problem that is marine littering by saying that “since 1986, the International Coastal Cleanup, has cultivated hundreds of thousands of volunteers and organizers in 132 countries” to help control the issue by clean the areas being affected (Adler 189). The contribution that companies and organization are doing to end marine litter has improved but the solution is still that it is up to the community to end this
Thomas Morton’s article, Oh This Is Great, wants people to have a greater understanding on what’s going in our world. People need to understand that our ocean is a pile of trash. As Morton stated, “The ocean is downstream of everything.” Considering the fact, people are thoughtlessly tossing their trash onto the floor, are sadly ending up into the ocean- where our food chain is greatly affected by.
Humans have become desensitized to pollution and degradation of the environment. The use of non-recyclable materials and disposing of waste irresponsibly has become something that we see every day, and we do not acknowledge as something harmful, because it does not directly affect us. However, there are both fictional and nonfictional examples of excessive use of resources and the misuse of materials that we do have, that can bring to the attention the damage that we are really causing. Two examples of this are Dr. Suess’ The Lorax, and Easter Island. Although very different, both the inhabitants of the town in the Lorax and Easter Island both contributed to degradation of the environment.
Here on Henderson Island, there is a lot of cleaning to do. Plastic, lots of plastic! Plastic seems to be one of the primary objects to find on beaches. We could use everyone's help to clean up this mess that is visible. People should be way more considerate when they throw their trash out of their window of their car, or just throw trash on the ground in the street, and It harms a lot.
“Our Oceans Are Turning into Plastic… Are We” “Our Oceans Are Turning into Plastic… Are We?” written by Susan Casey makes valid points about humans ruining our land we all call home. Captain Charles Moore traveled the sea more than he traveled on land.
Because the publishing company is stationed in the Lowcountry, most of the readers and subscribers are native to the area. This proves to be a constraint because the likelihood of people who are not from the Lowcountry reading Island Packet is not great. Island Pocket are limited to their audience which are generally locals from South Carolina. This is showing throughout the article because Earley only mentions local resources, such as South Carolina Aquarium and The Post and Courier, in her article. In the South Carolina Aquarium’s website, it is stated that “If nothing is done, researcher predict there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050” (par.

“ Natural gas industry has been identified as a major source of water pollution “ ( source 1 ). This quote from source 1 explains how out of all the ways of polluting the oceans, oil is always one of the worst. “ 8 million metric tons of plastic trash enters the sea from land every year “ ( source 4 ). This quote from source number 4 explains how every year tons and tons of plastic from land, gets into the oceans and continues to pollute. Garbage is polluting the oceans so much that the water is getting so bad, people are getting ill from drinking
Everyday people buy plastic things from the cafeteria, from plastic containers, lids on cups, and things as small as straws, and like 50% of plastic used it will be thrown away after one use. However, do you ever stop and think, what happens to the plastic? If you’re thinking that it just magically goes away you 're wrong. It will most likely end up in a landfill somewhere or in the ocean, and as you may think that your actions do not impact the world, think again. Everyone in the world has at least used one piece of plastic, adding to the problem of plastic pollution and helping certifying the terrifying statisticc that acooording to the 2018 Earth day video, “by 2050 there will more plastic in the ocean than fish”, which almost is impossible to think of.
According to a Biological Diversity website (https://www.biologicaldiversity.org/campaigns/ocean_plastics/), the author states that “Thousands of seabirds and sea turtles, seals and other marine mammals are killed each year after ingesting plastic.” People keep littering and that littering is killing precious marine life. The level of
According to a research done in America 2009, almost 1.9 billion of litter end up in the ocean almost everywhere. This happens when we throw away litter without any thought. According to a research it was revealed that almost 81% of the litter thrown is intentional whereas 16% of the litter is thrown in public places such as parks and beaches. Moreover 6% of the litter is thrown away thinking that somebody else will pick it.
We all know that it is impossible for pollution to be 100% gone since the cause of it is also from nature itself. But there are always solutions as to how to reduce pollution. It’s unbelievably foolish to know that pollution is the number 1 cause of death, and yet, pollution solutions are relatively low-cost. It’s great that we already have many companies trying to end pollution. Other companies try to be more eco-friendly and, for example, use plastic that decomposes faster.
While researching about how pollution affects sea turtles, we faced some issues on finding different types of pollution. As most people know, the plastic waste that is being dumped into the oceans and onto the beaches is becoming a main food source for sea turtles. When sea turtles see this trash, they consume the plastic causing death or severe sickness which has caused this species to become endangered. They also get tangled with the plastic in the ocean restricting them from normal movement and function. During our research, we found that there are more types of pollution affecting sea turtles than just plastic waste in the ocean.
It is impossible to give an accurate estimation of the amount of plastic that is being polluted into the ocean. However, in 1975 the global fishing fleet alone dumped approximately 135 400 tons of plastic fishing gear and 23 600 tons of synthetic packaging materials
The ocean is nowadays undergoing numerous environmental issues that further lead to marine pollution. Marine pollution is a very serious environmental issue that most of the countries of the world encounter. Aquatic littering is considered as one of the major causes of marine environment. The misleading use of the marine environment is extremely impacting the marine life and ecosystems. Moreover, the total amount of toxins and debris discharged by human beings is incredibly increasing in today 's world.
