The ability to focus on more things than one is challenging to say the least, although numerous individuals stake claim with the belief of having the proper qualification to do that such thing. However, is it possible for everyone to have such potentiality to multitask and focus their attention in a way most people cannot. Yes, it is possible, however, that is not what the Stroop Test focuses on, but instead on direct attention. The Stroop Effect, also known as the Stroop Test, challenges the aforementioned assertion of the ability to focus directly on one thing with the thought that attention should be stronger that what it is, but that it is overlooked by simple processes of the brain. By providing a background description of the test, I …show more content…
My results of the test was fairly within the expected range that I periodically place in. For the first part of the experiment my time was 6.045 seconds, and the second part of the experiment my time was 16.168 seconds. I have scored higher and I have scored lower on the test mostly due to familiarity of the experiment. The individual that I asked to participant had times of 9.501 seconds on the first half of the experiment and 20.553 on the second half. He was shocked by his initial scores and was confused on how the test could be that challenging, however, declined the opportunity to do another trial. The test did show that the brain quickly offered the wrong answer during the second part of the …show more content…
The Stroop Test has been experimented on numerous times, and because of so, multiple reliability tests have been performed. One such is the test-retest reliability which was given to nearly 30 college students. A total of four tests were given which occurred on two occasions that were spaced by one week. The results produced significant data of coefficients. However, the test-retest were found not to be significant when using different scoring methods. Although the data for the experiment given to college students produced vary results, this does not mean that the Stroop Test is not reliable. The Stroop Test has been considered to be reliable by different academics, one in whom correlates cognitive functioning with the test. Some consider that the test can be used to help in diagnosing patients with different brain
In addition, Rosenhan took a mental test which came out normal but the doctors diagnosed him with schizophrenia. Unfortunately, the patients at the mental hospital knew Rosenhan was faking his illness. On the other hand, Rosenhan and Jacobson did an experiment by testing grades first through sixth on a IQ test,
What I mean by that is, as excepted with an increase in secondary task in condition four my average was the highest meaning it took me the longest because my attentional demands had changed. A result I was not excepting was getting the same average for condition one and three. As stated earlier my trails in condition three were all over the place. It would be interesting to redo condition three and see if my times would still be all over the place or would be different. Also, comparing condition three results with the other students in my class and see if they had a similar experience.
Our minds, according to Carr, have emulated a “staccato quality” (Carr 802). In other words, our lack of concentration comes from the constant engagement we have with the
He reports that during testing pressure to perform well acts as a motivator, however, fear of testing anxiety and failure become devastating to him because his self-worth is connected to the outcome of the test. He reports that bad experiences ( not passing his tests ) with test-taking has lead him to have a negative mindset and influences his expectations for his performance on future tests. He reports that during test he experiences the following
What is the NCLEX? The NCLEX examination is a national test taken by nursing students to certify they are ready to practice in the field. Nursing students who have passed all their classes, and are ready to graduate, will take the test and hopefully receive their registered nurse certification. There is a great deal of history behind the exam.
This goes to show that since you didn't do something each day to prepare for the test, your results were low. To accomplish something does mean you have to put in extra work, it will not just come to you without always doing something to achieve it. Bill Gates is a very successful man, he started his business in his garage. He worked every day on creating the perfect computer, it didn't happen over night in fact it took him years till he got it right. Bill gates was always doing something to accomplish his goal, if he just sat around everyday not acting on his vision our world would have never even knew what a computer was.
Would people actually issue a shock that could be potentially fatal to the person they are issuing the test to? The biggest part of this was the influence of the “professor” that was in the room with the “teachers”. Whenever a particularly large shock was issued to the “learner” he would cry out in pain. This caused several people to question whether
At the end of the test there is a disclaimer stating “The results are not a definitive assessment of your implicit preference. The results may be influenced by variables related to the test (e.g., the category labels or particular items used to represent the categories on the IAT) or the person (e.g., how tired you are). The results are provided for educational purposes only,” (IAT TEST). The lack of a consistent variable could significantly alter the data recorded. It is claimed that the order a person takes the test has a small effect; however, the test would be more accurate if each individual took it in the same order.
1. What were your results for the test? Were these results surprising to you? Why or why not? a.
The data were processed and analyzed using SPSS version 18. Frequencies, cross tabulation, Pearson’s, chi-square test, ANOVA were used to analyze the data. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically
Before there were animals, now, also humans. Scientists have begun to experiment with humans as they do with animals. In the book Flowers for Algernon the main character is a mentally challenged man named Charlie Gordon. He is motivated and enthusiastic, so his teacher recommends him for an experimental operation destinated to improve intelligence. The operation was also done to Algernon, a laboratory mouse.
Attention has always been a prized commodity. The brain knows it and cognitive psychologists know it, but the average person has yet to fully grasp the concept. Articles on how to multi-task still flag the covers of popular magazines, and distracting cell phones and tablets accompany students to class on the forefront of their desks next their notes. It has been verified time and time again that the mind simply cannot attend to two things simultaneously; one can pay attention to one thing or another, but not to two things at once. People know that neutralizing distractions will yield invaluable minutes of clarity and focus, but for most, the application of such, is nearly impossible.
“The Test” by Theodore Thomas is a short play about a driver’s test with a questionable motive. The test is designed to remove potentially harmful drivers, but with its traumatic hypnosis, it could cause mental instability. In the test, the new driver is hypnotized and they visualize that they are in a fatal car accident. However, to some this may cause post-traumatic stress disorder or other mental disorders such as mild to extreme anxiety. The opposition may claim that drivers who go through the test are “more careful for the rest of their lives” (Thomas); however, even if the driver never agrees to drive or they go through treatment, they may have life-long consequences.
Have you ever had difficulty taking a test, couldn’t concentrate and were easily frustrated? Or known someone like this? I have ADD and often feel this way in school. In This is a Test by Stephen Gregg, Alan shares the same struggles during test taking as someone with ADD/ADHD.
Norm-referenced tests have been researched for many years prior to publishing and actually using them for diagnosing. They provide a norm group which is used for comparison to determine the level of the student. Furthermore, their best use is determining strengths and weaknesses of a student to use when making placement decisions.
