Christopher Columbus’ Invasion of the New World Genocide is defined as the deliberate killing of people, especially those of a particular nation or ethnic group. Funded by royalty Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, Christopher Columbus and many other men set off to find a direct water route west from Europe to Asia (1). He made four trips to in 1492, 1493, 1498 and 1502 and failed to accomplish his goal (1). Columbus is known for discovering the Americas when accidently sailing there instead. At the end of the 1400’s a problematic trip was the journey to Asia from Europe by land (1).
In the quote “on October 22, 1707, at the Scilly Isles four homebound British warships ran aground and nearly two thousand men lost their lives.”(Sobel, P.6). Sobel accounts a few examples of how the lack of being able to plot longitude on a grid would result in getting lost on sea. It also shows how this problem was an issue that astronomers, sailors, and even philosophers struggled with finding a solution to for centuries, making the asperity of the problem much more severe. This gives the reader a bit of a understanding of the importance of longitude and further convinces the reader in her favor of how important Harrison’s invention was to the
It left 100,000 people homeless with 300 people dead. The fire destroyed an area of four miles long and one mile wide. Roughly one third of the city lay in ruins, 17,450 building burnt to a crisp. There were many explorers that had made the treacherous journey across the Atlantic Ocean to North America, for instance: the Vikings had a major expedition to North America, in which Erik the Red was exiled from Iceland for committing manslaughter. He set sail westward and landed on Southern Greenland, and after many years Greenland colonists found the settlement of Erik the Red. Another famous expedition was by Bjarne Herjólfsson; a merchant whose ship was blown off course by a terrible storm, and, after sailing for three days westward, he founded an unknown land. Although, some might argue that all the Nordic explorations to North America were a collection of myths and were hoaxes, because there is not any sufficient evidence to show the Vikings imprint on the land. But, the undeniable truth is that the Paleo-Indians were the first human beings to conquer the vast American wilderness.
Just a year prior to painting American Gothic, Wood was witness to the crash of the stock market, marking the end of six years of enormous prosperity in the USA. The economy stalled and tension built up amongst the people. To broaden the scope, across the Atlantic ocean, fascism began gaining followers and taking power. As a result a political ideology was developed. More people felt the need to go back to older times, to a more primitive and rural kind of life.
