Saying that that the poet has one main reason to write is too simple and therefore saying that the main purpose of a poem is to either explain the poet to te world or the world to the poet could be an over statement. Larkin and Bishop write in different ways and for different reasons which therefore already goes against the idea that they always write for one of two reasons. The poems might go along the lines of one these reasons but this does not mean that this is their mai purpose. In terms of primary concerns of the the poets it could be argues that the rain objective to express their view of the world to the reader. The presentation of the world is shown to be done with different techniques. This contradicts the idea that the poets main purpose is to explain either the world to themselves or themselves to the world. “A ribbon at a time” the uses of the word “ribbon” to gives the idea that the sky is silky and calm and is a word which instantly evokes an image, yet this does not give any for of explanation of how the sun rose. The speaker ’s tone changes form being confident, “I 'll tell you how the sun rose,-“ to more dubious and unclear “But how he set, I know not.” Giving the idea that instead of trying trying to give an explanation of explain what is happening, she is speculating and just wants to enjoy what is there without any hidden messages and complications. But, the reference to the “domine in gray” also suggest a fear of the unknown and the juxtaposition between the “amethyst” and “yellow” brings down the happy tone, but it does not show the poet or speaker reflecting or trying to explain the world or explain their reaction to the
