1. In many pieces of literature and film, water in a literal and figurative sense is always significant. In “The Housebreaker of Shady Hill” Johnny Hake has an eye opening experience with water in the form of rain. The rain seems to clear Johnny’s mind and set him free from the sins he has committed. The water is significant because it is a baptism of sorts for Johnny. One Sunday morning Johnny’s Church holds communion; while Johnny is preparing to take communion he is distracted by a rat gnawing at a floorboard he misses communion. When a Christian does not take communion they are not taking the Blood of Christ, which separates them from the Lord. The rainfall at the end of Cheever’s “The Housebreaker of Shady Hill” is even more significant …show more content…
The lack of water and rain is crucial to the Mischief’s relationship with the Grandmother. Grandmother was a lukewarm Christian all her life until her last words when she finally became one with the Lord and saw the Mischief not as a criminal and murderer, but one of God’s children, one of her kind. When the Grandmother reaches out to the Mischief to try and get through to him, the Mischief panics and shoots the Grandmother. The Grandmother dies happily knowing she will be returning to her creator. O’Connor mentions the clear sky, without a cloud in sight. The lack of clouds and precipitation is important because had there been rain maybe the Mischief would have been able to be saved and turned to religion and …show more content…

On the day that Gatsby has chosen to reconnect with Daisy, his lover from many years in the past, it is “pouring rain,” and, during Gatsby and Daisy’s awkward interaction, “once more it was pouring.” (Fitzgerald 83, Fitzgerald 88). When a liquid “pour[s],” it is falling as a result of gravity and rain represents an atmosphere of hopeless melancholy. Here, Fitzgerald uses watery weather to demonstrate how Gatsby is falling back toward the past just as rain falls to the ground. However, when it becomes less awkward, Gatsby notices that “It’s stopped raining” and “twinkle-bells of sunshine” enter the room (Fitzgerald 89).
Heavy rain comes followed by the sounds of the threatening storms. This visual appearance done in the film is so effective, as it gives a thrilling effect as to what is going to happen next. Also, the ominous storm creates excitement

In the beginning of the book, rain is used to provide the audience with context. The first time that rain is seen by the audience is when Rose first meets her pet dog, Rain. In this scene, Rose’s
As Stated by the author of How to Read Literature Like a Professor For Kids, by Thomas Foster, authors use certain varieties of weather conditions in order to set a mood in the story that’s relevant to the scenario present. Foster explains this action as saying, “But an author doesn't have a quick shower of rain, or a flurry or snow, or a flood or a blizzard, for no reason at all (Foster, 59).” What the author is trying to remark is that authors don't put unnecessary weather unless it contributes to the plot or the mood, sometimes even using it as means of ivory. One example of weather being used in the movie clip from Toy Story is rain. The rain didn't start until Sid was just about the release a rocket outside with Buzz attached, which
Also, with the dust storms happening no rain came down. The farmers needed the rain for their crops
The weather in the novel The Great Gatsby is a spring like setting, whichreally sets the tone for the events that happen. In Thomas Foster’s How to ReadLiterature like a Professor, he states “So if you want a character to be cleansed, symbolically. Let him walk through the rain to get somewhere. In The Great Gatsby,Jay Gatsby was meeting Daisy for tea, he was inside waiting for her, snuck out theback door while raining, came to the front door soaking wet and went into the roomwhere Daisy was. Once he went in the rain, he got somewhere and reached anotherlevel of him and Daisy’s love for one another.
This shows as the murmur in the house gets softer, the rain begins to wither. The weather changing represents Daisy and Gatsby warming up to each other. It's the start of something better. After hard times have passed or something has been overcome, good comes from that. In addition, rain is also the end of something good.
But when Grandma realizes who it was, the first thing she does is cry and worry about her life and no one else’s. This is when we see the changes in the sky. The Misfit draws attention to it saying, “Ain’t a cloud in the sky… Don’t see no sun but don’t see no cloud neither” (O’Connor 42). Grandma then calls it a beautiful day.
Chima Enwere Professor Sam Zahran 2014FA.ENG.112.0003 23 September 2014 Literary Analysis Although brief, the short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” has a vast amount of literary elements to examine. By examining Bradbury’s usage of symbolism, personification/anthropomorphism, and irony, we can grasp a better understanding of what he wanted readers to learn and appreciate this work of literature. There are many symbols that have much significance in this short story.
Joshua Chen In “It’s More Than Just Rain or Snow”, Thomas Foster explains that rain is more than just a “part of the setting”, instead it changes the characters, morphing them into a different version of themselves (Foster 70). In chapter three of Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein’s recollection of his experience of a thunderstorm is a powerful example of how on the outside, the thunderstorm just seemed like a normal occurrence, but it changed the course of Victor’s studies. This natural event sparked Frankenstein’s interest in the supernatural and is one of the catalysts in starting Victor’s journey of studying the laws of electricity, a crucial part of life. Without this study of electricity, it may be possible that Victor would not have
Before going on the family trip, grandmother makes sure she is dressed very properly “ In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once she was a proper lady” (421). Grandmother wears white cotton gloves, a navy straw sailor hat with a bunch of white violets on the white brim” which she adjusted often to ensure she had a good outward appearance. Grandmother’s moment of redemption comes to her while she is in a ditch with a serial killer.
Kate Chopin created a very complex character named Edna Pontellier in her novel The Awakening. Mrs. Pontellier is peculiar because her thoughts are consistently drury and she is insatiable. Chopin uses many different strategies to develop Mrs. Pontellier’s character such as imagery but the most prominent strategy is symbolism. Symbols featured in the story include birds, two lovers, a widow, and water. Whenever water appears in a story or novel it can often represent baptism, rebirth, and/or death.
The grandmother uses Jesus as a scapegoat to show how she is a child of God while the Misfit tells of how he really perceives Jesus and that there is no justification of his actions. In the event of the car accident, the Grandmother was left with a physical crisis that quickly showed as her family was sent off into the woods to be killed one by one. This soon transitioned to a spiritual crisis both between the Grandmother and the Misfit as she uses Jesus's name to try and escape her fate. This spiritual crisis leads the characters to express their personal conception of reality and how they perceive the revelation of the situation that they are in. The Grandmother has a sense that reality should revolve around her and that she should manipulate tools such as religion to benefit her outcome.
The impact of the weather scene is a way to indirectly relate to the murder of Victor’s young brother, William. The author, Shelley utilizes weather to convey the Victor’s emotional feelings about the murder of his bother William. Through imagery in the quote, Shelley is able to utilize words to describe the weather relating them to both the storm and what has happened to our protagonist. To me, the flashes of light illuminate the lake which is his brother. William’s illumination is the light of his life is soon quenched when the author describes the “pitchy darkness”
