Helpless, the feeling you get when the odds are stacked against you and in every scenario you see failure abounding. Helplessness is prominent in the development of characters in Spill Simmer Falter Wither, Ray depicts helplessness in his inability to have meaningful relationships and pursue a healthy social life while One-eye characterizes helplessness as a life without options, one where the cards you were dealt prohibit you from living a comfortable life. While both these characters personify helplessness differently they both convey how daunting emotional stress can be.
Helplessness regarding Ray starts with how Ray describes his home, “What does my bedroom smell of? Damp spores, fluffed dirt and dead sap? See the black mold on the end wall, how it mushroomed into a reverse constellation: the night sky a white wall and the white stars black, wet and furry.” Ray’s pessimistic view of himself and his solitude play into the meaning of the word helpless, he doesn’t view his living space as worthy of care or his effort and in a way the house represents how Ray views himself and his current situation. Ray goes on to explain himself as “When I move my clodhopper feet and mismeasured legs make me pitch and clump.”

Ray explains his life as marked by the death of his father and following the death of his father he plunges into extreme seclusion only impeded by his pet. Ray is so entrenched in his solitude that he claims “Everywhere I go it is as though I’m wearing a spacesuit which buffers me from other people.” Ray doesn’t believe that there is any chance or reason to socialize with people and escape his loneliness, he feels helpless to the fact that he is lonely and doesn’t believe that his own actions are at fault for his seclusion. He also reasons that his actions contribute to the loneliness he feels, “my hands fall gracelessly, stupidly. I’ve always struggled with
“The hot, damp air was full of dirt, cement powder, sawdust, and exhaust from the steam shovels (Drehle 13.)” They lived in Tenement apartments. Imagine living in a four hundred square foot apartment with no windows and a shared bathroom with the entire floor. It was common for the hallways to have no lights. It was also extremely crowded.
The attic smells of heat and dust and confinement and her own urine in the shaving bowl in the corner." (Doerr, 452). The darkness, the musty smell, and the silence all serve to create a sense of claustrophobia and anxiety that the reader can empathize with. Another example is when Daniel LeBlanc holds the stone he had been given to safeguard, "In his hand, the stone is about the size of a chestnut. Even at this late hour, in the quarter-light, it glows a majestic blue.
In society, emotional connection with others is considered fundamental and beneficial, but living without social support can result in persistent stress and pessimism. The novella "Of Mice and Men" emphasises the significance of companionship in life and how it can make life feel meaningless without it. John Steinbeck stresses that having a strong bond with someone is essential for a fulfilling life and mental well-being. He discusses how without maintaining a close and meaningful connection with an individual can guide one to self-isolation and create social anxiety. In addition, the author illustrates the adverse effects of loneliness and isolation on a person's psyche and overall demeanour.
Ray on one hand has people completely avoid him when he’s walking by or taking mental notes of his license plate when he’s passing a park “when I pitch and clump and flail down the street , grown men step into the drain gully to avoid brushing against my invisible spacesuit” page 9. One Eye’s seclusion is a little different to Ray’s because he was abandoned by his previous owner and left at the pound. If it wasn’t for Ray finding an interest in One Eye, he would have been put down “Another day, y’know, and he’d a been put down” page 6. Another important point to look at is fear.
Loneliness is an emotional state where one is socially isolated and lacks human interaction which is experienced by many people around the world. Although it is a frequent occurrence around the world, it is usually disregarded and ignored. The novel Speak and the article “Teens in Covid Isolation: “I felt like I was suffocating”, displays the experiences many children faced with loneliness and how it impacts their life. Loneliness is an aspect of depression, and those who experience it can lead to self-harm, decreased academic performance, and struggle to talk about it to others. People who struggle with loneliness often find it difficult to let their true feelings out, leading to a sense of isolation and emotional distress.
The interactions we have with one another and the way in which we perceive the world have great impacts on and reflect our self-worth. When encountering people it can be difficult to allow them into our world and to have them understand us on a deeper and emotional level and in many instances relationships may be of more impeding than supporting. Author of the sophisticated and compelling picture book, ‘The Red Tree,’ Shaun Tan creates a powerful and engaging tale, articulating many valuable and meaningful messages. Through the language features and ideas represented it is established that although an individual may experience profound feelings of sadness and depression caused by loneliness, they hold the potential to transition of a new way
Conversely, now that people are around, he does not want to show his childhood loneliness. He tries to
In human nature, fear is a big part of how we act, but there is one thing that we are the most afraid of, loneliness. People are often social people, and when you take out the possibility of talking and communicating to someone, you will feel a kind of sadness. There are people who are absolutely fine with being lonely, but most of the human population will not be able to stand it. In Teju Cole’s book “Open City”, Cole creates a character that represents the sadness and fear of being alone. Loneliness is something that we can never get over, the main character in Open City, Julius, was forced to deal with the fact that he was indeed alone, without anyone there to comfort him, and even if he had found someone, it would not last long, and the only thing that Julius wants, is to able to be free.
Isolation often leads to insanity. Human beings without companionship and love from others are left alone. They get trapped in their own minds, and become a threat to themselves. Remoteness is evident in one of the characters in Ross’ Short story “One’s a Heifer”, where Arthur Vickers becomes a victim of isolation. Desolation is apparent in Ross’s two short stories “The Painted Door” and “One’s A Heifer”.
An icy horror of loneliness seized him; he saw himself standing apart and watching all the world fade away from him – a world of shadows, of fickle dreams. He was like a little child,
“you got swamped by the smell of mildew… The floor so mushy underfoot…the ceiling bowed and stained” (270). You usually don’t want to go in a room that is gross. You also usually don’t want to face your problems; the narrator’s problem was with his lack of control of his life. Entering the room was him realizing he has no control.
But most of the story is a form of symbolism. This story gives the reader a look at what it feels like to be lonely. In this world it’s seems hard, cold, and alone. The world seems dead. But many people in our world would say it’s not that different then the one Ray Bradbury wrote about.
Additionally , the house that the narrator mentions is illustrated as “ mansion of gloom “ which might be a sign that the aura of the house has something dreadful in it. However , the Narrator reveals something important about his first impression for the house by saying “ I looked upon the scene before me , upon the mere house, upon the bleak walls , upon the vacant eye-like windows ( 3 ).To illustrate , the words such as “ air of heaven , silent tarn , mystic vapor “ used as a reinforcement for making the ambience of the house as gloomy. In fact , in the light of these facts , it could be said that the house has an darkness appearance which might be an indication of its mysterious atmosphere.
In enduring these complex emotions, this section was the most remarkable part. One of the first apparent emotions the boy experiences with the death of his father is loneliness to make this section memorable. The boy expresses this sentiment when he stays with his father described as, “When he came back he knelt beside his father and held his cold hand and said his name over and over again,” (McCarthy 281). The definition of loneliness is, “sadness because one has no friends or company.”
Cobwebs linger in every witch way, and antique furniture layered with dust sits perfectly arranged in the living room. Cautiously, I walk farther into the house to explore. With every heavy step and pressure on the floor boards, it feels as if the house will collapse on top of me. I make my way into the kitchen. An old wooden table sits in the corner, along with matching chairs.
