Shakespeare is a remarkable author who liked to put tragedy to a new meaning. Through the tragic play: Macbeth, we follow Macbeth, through his ambition, greed, and manipulation that eventually brings him to his demise. As announced Thane of Cawdor, like the weird sisters have promised, he finds himself wondering if he will later be announced king. We find our tragic hero put to the test of good and bad, brought on by his wife. Through the theme of man and order versus disorder, we find Lady Macbeth manipulating our tragic hero to do the unspeakable.
He even informs his most beloved, Lady Macbeth, who also shares his ambition. The play is about treachery and manipulation. First, the witches manipulate Macbeth which sets off the chain reaction, then Lady Macbeth manipulates Macbeth into committing regicide and afterwards Macbeth manipulates the murderers into killing Banquo and his son Fleance. Shakespeare reveals that the witches are being controlled by higher supernatural powers, "call 'em. Let me see 'em," shocking the Jacobean audience and as a result creating doubt and fear of the unknown.
The Role of Weird Sisters in Macbeth’s Collapse In Shakespeare’s great play the Macbeth, there are lots of causes of Macbeth’s collapse. The factors of both his own personality defects and his power hungry wife Lady Macbeth contributed to downfall of Macbeth. However, The Three Witches were the most disastrous for Macbeth. Firstly, the sisters revived Macbeth’s dormant desires to be the most powerful. Secondly, their prophecies about his security were playing a vital role in Macbeth’s death.
Many of the ideas that the king expressed to the public were included in Macbeth, such as predicting the future. Apart from that, witches were always seen as female, and not as male. Therefore, two embodiments of evil in the play are the Witches and Lady Macbeth (both mentioned above). They play a large part in the downfall of Macbeth as they put the initial idea of becoming king into Macbeth´s head by “predicting” it. Thus, when looking to the relation between the witches and the female gender, it is to say that while Lady Macbeth rejects female gender by what she says, the witches do so by what they are.
Lady Macbeth is extremely ambitious in terms of gaining power and advantages for her own life. Lady Macbeth becomes more ambitious when she sees the opportunity to take King Duncan’s throne away. She reads a letter about the three prophecies that are given to Macbeth. As Lady Macbeth reads the letter from Macbeth, she realizes that Macbeth has the potential to be more than he is and he can be the source to bring the opportunity to her fulfill her ambitions. She prays for the spirits to exchange her feminine qualities for masculine qualities when she says, “That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here / and fill me with the crown to the toe top-full / Of direst cruelty” (1.5, 41-43).
There comes a point in life where some people are faced with an opportunity to do an illegal act. Macbeth is faced with a chance to end King Duncan’s life and to become King himself, as Lady Macbeth had just come to him and made him aware of her plans to murder Duncan. In Macbeth’s soliloquy during Act I scene VII, he uses an apprehensively foreboding tone to convey how conflicted he is to the readers. The purpose of this speech is for Macbeth to explain why killing Duncan is a horrible idea. Also, Macbeth’s faith in the three witches is a big reason he decides to do and they are why Lady Macbeth created the idea to kill the King.
The extract is taken from Act 3 Scene 5 of Macbeth written by William Shakespeare. It appears that Shakespeare is using this scene to further intensify the mysterious atmosphere and highlight supernatural elements in the play. The scene also serves to highlight crucial aspects of the character and personality of Macbeth which would ultimately prove to be the cause of his downfall. From the very beginning one can see that Hecate is very angry with the witches as is evident by her referring to the witches as “beldams”, “saucy” and “overbold”. She also questions the witches as to why she was not called to take part in plotting the downfall of Macbeth, evident by her statement; “To trade and traffic … Or show the glory of our art?” The words “trade” and “traffic” (of riddles and affairs of death) highlight the fact that Hecate and the weird sisters are not new to spouting prophecies, spreading evil, and destroying noble men, and have probably been the cause of the downfall of men like Macbeth.
He then does everything that he deems necessary to remain in control of the kingdom. However, the question of what ultimately leads to Macbeth channeling his tragic flaw is one that is highly debated. Some people believe that Lady Macbeth, Macbeth’s wife, is responsible for Macbeth’s downfall, and some people believe that Macbeth would have had a downfall regardless. The answer to this question becomes quite obvious when looking at the evidence: Lady Macbeth is ultimately responsible for Macbeth’s downfall because she is the one who started the chain
