I am going to be running the Regent 's Park 10k run for a charity named Stonewall. I chose this charity as it is something I 'm extremely passionate about. This charity supports LGBT youth who are struggling with bullying. I am passionate about this subject as I struggled in and throughout primary and secondary school coming to terms with who I am and the names people called me. This bullying was a main part of why I suffered severe depression; With the right help though, I was back in a better and happier state of mind.
Despite these negative groups there are still plenty of non-profit organizations that encourage positive social change on civilization. The Egale Canada Human Rights Trust is one of the many organizations that has been extremely successful in supporting and making social change in society. Egale is quite different from other corporations that have similar views as them. Instead of advocating one specific group form the LGBTQ community, they assist numerous different minorities. Egale also tries to reach out to diverse age groups in society through different programs and events and each year they prepare for charities that help different target groups.
This type of community-based option has proven to be quite effective in easing the reintegration process, but there are additional programs that offer an even more personal and interactive approach. Circles of Support and Accountability is a perfect example; COSA works with people who have committed crimes, specifically sex offenders, to reintegrate them into communities where they feel unwelcome and unwanted. The core members of the program learn how to, “carry out basic aspects of community life such as looking for work or accommodation and adjusting to life outside of prison. In addition, the volunteers hold the [offenders] to account for their own reintegration” (Clarke et al, p. 3). This is one of the main reasons the program has proven
Since 2013 WIN Miami Chapter has supported the community through our work with Lotus House. Lotus House is a shelter and support system for homeless women and children who have gone through traumatic experiences, such as abuse and domestic violence and who have no place to go. Lotus House gives them shelter, food, therapy and education in order to build a better life. WIN members have provided meals and games for the children and donated clothing, and other necessary items. With great satisfaction and the help of Cat Foundation, WIN made a donation of $ 8,000 to further support Lotus House in their daily work of providing a supportive and nurturing environment to these women and children in need.
In October 12, 2010, Joel Burns made a public message towards the GLBT teens by sharing a personal story. He delivered an amazing message by sharing also those who’ve been victims of being portrayed as gay, bullying, and suicides. Inspiring the young GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender) teens that life does not end by the words of others who have an oppose mentality. Life does get better once you graduate high school, adventure throughout your adult life, finding someone you may last a lifetime, and building a foundation just like those individuals who singled you out for having different interest. “...that the things would get easier, please stick around, society will change, please live long enough to see it…”
By taking pride in America’s communities and youth, the program takes action against youth drug use through education and inspiration. From a young age, the Elks Drug Awareness Program asks kids to discern what it means to be drug free. Kids express their feelings of resisting peer pressure through the many local and national poster and essay contests. The program reaches nearly every school and community across the nation with its many drug prevention activities, public service
The Social Control Theory applies to the Reclaiming Futures Program as well because these youth offenders have such poor bonds with their family, friends and community around them. Getting into this program, their lives would change because they would be shown bond types from within the program. The fact that there are five main participants in the program just shows that there is hope for their lives with making bonds and feeling wanted and loved. The Judges, The Juvenile System, Adolescent Substance Abuse Counselors, Community Members, Project Director all work together just shows them something to look up to. (Reclaiming Futures Program, 2012-2015).
The CSEC Taskforce is fairly new in Tehama County. The point of this event was to inform the community about the taskforce and educate the community about the resources available. There were many professionals, parents from the community, and even teens and pre-teens at this event. It was refreshing to see youth at this event as that is the age group that is affected most by sex trafficking.
Education at the primary level and the proper delivery of important health information. Many of teenagers now are sexually active but don’t know how to use contraceptive methods. Education is the best approach in the promotion of health in this community and provide information on resources will be helpful such as health screen and HPV vaccination at health fairs should be disclosed. There are now many low cost clinics that have bilingual speaking staff that are available and can provide assistance with any health
In this time of violence and gangs, Erin Gruwell was able to change education forever and save many kids lives. During this time education was changing and it wasn 't for the better, kids were dying on the streets due to gun violence and because of the gangs they were involved in. Luckily, Erin Gruwell was able to implement teaching tactics for integrated schools that are even used today. Her tactics included, rewriting curriculum, treating students as creator of knowledge, creating classroom community, and teaching self realization.
Bridshett, The agency you chose to evaluate has a lot of similarities with the agency I am evaluating. I am evaluating ForKids and like Intercept Youth Services they work with kids and their families. They focus more on homeless families, but the programs they offer are very similar. Although your agency does offer other services that I think are great, like the services they have for young mothers. I think it will be a good learning experience for you evaluating an agency that works with different populations.
“Planned Parenthood is proud of its vital role in providing young people with honest sexuality and relationship information in classrooms and online to help reduce our nation’s alarmingly high rates of teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections” (“Who We Are”). It’s important to teach people of the risk of sexual activity and steps on how to keep a healthy lifestyle. Recently Planned Parenthood has helped less fortunate countries that do not have access to health and reproductive care, some of the countries being Africa and Latin America. “Planned Parenthood Federation of America is also a founding member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, based in London” (“Who We Are”). Planned Parenthood has been around for quite a long time, having many supporters and donors that provide health care around
The narrative approach used in this research was key in that it provides an analytical approach to the voice of those who aren’t ever heard. Each participant described a life full of struggle, loss and economic injustices. Whether it was due to abuse, poverty or instability these stories reveal a part of life that many people don’t take the time to think about when seeing these youth living in the streets. In spite of their limitation the data revealed throughout this study shows how these homeless youth are still able to make light of their situations. Using their experiences and knowledge of self worth they are able to stay positive and strive for a better
Clinicians can also provide resources that youths can utilize after the termination of intervention such as community mindfulness groups and other support groups. Continuing practice is important in order to maintain the skills learned in the group. Diversity and Social Justice Issues Social justice means all citizens are entitled to the same rights and services. However, children and adolescents are deeply underserved and often remain unseen. Four children die from maltreatment everyday, and neglect cases are on the rise.
boosts incredibly and their outlook on life is positive. The parents that emphasize good character and raise the children to be more than phenomenal, impact our society greatly; let alone the foster children’s lives. Those are the kind of parents we need to encourage to have open arms and embrace foster children to truly effect their lives for the best of them. It’s a tragedy that finding beneficial parents are so laborious. “More than one-half of children in foster care have ever experienced caregiver violence or caregiver incarceration and almost two-thirds have lived with someone who had an alcoholic or drug problem” (Bramlett).
