In the beginning of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge’s view on Christmas is negative and he is characterized as being unsympathetic, uncharitable, grouchy. To begin, there are three different spirits who visit Scrooge at various times in the night. The spirits help make Scrooge realize the consequences of his actions and they change Scrooge's view on Christmas. For example, Scrooge is visited by the Spirit of Christmas Past who shows him his childhood and the actions that made him who he is now. The Christmas Carol is a story of an old miser that cares nothing of Christmas, until an old friend of his warns him of the terrible things that might happen if he doesn’t change his ways. He also warns of three other being that will be visiting him throughout the night. The spirit of Past, present, and Future. Although some might make the claim that either Past or Future were the most influential to Scrooge’s thoughts about Christmas. The Spirit which is most influential in Scrooge’s transformation is Present.
This ghost had lots in store for Scrooge. This first thing that Ghost of Christmas yet to come shows Scrooge was three businessmen talking about Scrooge and his death, and none of them were really phased by it. The next thing that the ghost of Christmas past showed Scrooge was crooks robbing Scrooge’s house and selling all of his belongings for money. Then, the spirit Shows Scrooge is own dead body, and Scrooge realizes that the unhappy old man that the businessmen were talking of, and the people were stealing from, was himself. In summary, one of the major themes in the story A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Is sacrifice benefits mankind. You can see these examples in the story. One of the first pieces of evidence you can see from this theme is When Fred goes to ask scrooge if he wants to join the family gathering. he sacrificed his time to go get scrooge even though he knew Scrooge was gonna say no. moving toward the middle of the movie another piece of context was given when in the scene when Scrooge's old boss stops work to throw a Christmas party. Scrooge is the protagonist, the character with the most room to change, in Charles Dickens’ book A Christmas Carol. Due to outside forces, that manifested themselves in the forms of three ghosts, Scrooge changed throughout the book. The ghost most responsible for said change, is the Ghost of Christmas Past. The ghost of Christmas Past was the cause of extreme emotional reactions in Scrooge, a drastic change in Scrooge’s character, and caused Scrooge to ponder his life’s outlook. The Ghost of Christmas Past caused extreme emotional reactions from Scrooge.
Looking for Change Hurts Many film and literature characters fail to leave an impact on the reader. This is not the case for Charles Dickens’ character Ebenezer Scrooge from A Christmas Carol and Frank Capra’s creation of a character, George Bailey from It’s a Wonderful Life. Both protagonists are beloved characters, but have drastic similarities and differences. Ebenezer Scrooge and George Bailey are best compared by their outlook on life, time spent with the spirits, and each character’s transformation in the story.
How is Marley’s Ghost presented and what Messages does he present to Scrooge Marley’s ghost is the first supernatural character to visit scrooge and probably has one of the biggest effects on scrooge in the first place. Dickens presents Marley as a much more frightening ghost compared to the other ghost that visits scrooge. I think Dickens does this to show how Scrooge is frightened of what Marley has become physically and believes him. Also as Marley was Scrooges only friend I think thus definitely would have made him trust Marley’s ghost as they ran the business together and were the only people that understood each other.
Consequently, the theme not only shows the value of hope, but also how Scrooge had a major change of heart when he received hope. Formerly, Scrooge was very vain and had an abject spirit. His life was without much hope of any happiness. The different themes in “A Christmas Carol” help people like Scrooge to realize how fortunate they are. In addition, Scrooge learns that he is very fortunate to have all of the things he does, and that hope can be the key to happiness.
At the beginning of A Christmas Carol,Scrooge is mean, selfish, and greedy. He is mean, because on pg.9, he never donates to the poor, and he always yells at little kids. They say “it's a poor excuse for picking a man’s pocket every twenty-fifth of december!”Also, another word is he is greedy,on pg.17, says he is caustic and cold as ever and never gave anything to anyone. He said “what do you want with me.
“The righteousness of the blameless keeps his ways straight, but the wicked falls by his own wickedness”(Prov. 11:5). The story, “A Christmas Carol”, is about a cold-hearted man named Scrooge who transforms himself into a jolly, kind man when three Ghosts teach Scrooge about the spirit of Christmas. In the story, Charles Dickens illustrates the theme of how no one is past redemption through the transformation of Scrooge’s personality by the lessons of the Spirits. At the beginning of the story, Scrooge’s selfish personality is revealed, and the Ghost of Christmas Past comes and shows him the memories and truth of his life long ago.
Drawing From the Tradition Stories and traditional works are always connected in some way. Even the popular traditional story A Christmas Carol has its connections with another popular read: How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The story of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens follows a man with a sense of greed and selfishness that lives in the 1800s of England. The man’s name is Ebeneezer Scrooge. One night a ghost of a businessman of he once knew named Jacob Marley comes to Scrooge, so Scrooge can change how he’s been living for the past decades Scrooge has been alive.
He shows Scrooge what terrible conditions his employee, Cratchit, is living in, and how his family and he are struggling to make ends meet for the holiday season. He also shows him a homeless community that Scrooge didn't even know existed because he forgot that not everybody can be as wealthy as he is. This scene was cut from the play probably due to its lack of significance to the main plotline of the original story. The film depicts Future leading Scrooge to his grave, where men are digging up his never-shared fortunes for themselves, while the play only tells of the men digging the grave to bury him.
Scrooge has started to really understand what he has done wrong in his life and how selfish and mean he really is . The ghost of Christmas Yet to Come shows Scrooge his future and how the people don’t care that Scrooge dies “If there is any person in the town, who feels emotion caused by this man’s death,” said Scrooge quite agonised, “show that person to me, Spirit, I beseech you” ( Dickens 11 ). Scrooge is seeing how people treat him when he is dead but Scrooge has no clue they are talking about him. Scrooge is showed the future but Scrooge thinks he has already changed completely because he has no idea that the person the men are talking about is him. Scrooge is changing fast but he has not seen the shadows that have not happened but will happen soon "You are about to show me shadows of the things that have not happened, but will happen in the time before us," Scrooge pursued.
