An archetype is present in every society and culture. Familiar characters, symbols, and situations are used in film to convey basic human experiences that will resonate with the viewer. Archetypes send an understandable message to viewers as to the details of a character or scene. Whether the viewers realize it or not, they will have interpreted what is being conveyed without even thinking about the insertion of archetypes. In his film The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, J.R.R. Tolkien incorporates archetypes into his setting and characters to convey basic human experiences. Throughout the movie, the setting is littered with the contrast of light and dark colors in the backgrounds, costumes, and lighting to portray and produce certain …show more content…
Hope doesn’t neglect that the cause of despair isn’t present, but it looks on toward the end and believes the present situation will pass and the end will be better and brighter. But when there’s a difficult or dreadful situation on the horizon, as there was for Frodo and Sam while looking towards Mordor, despair creeps closer and can hang overhead like black stormclouds. Sometimes hope needs awakening because the sun cannot be seen past the stormclouds. This awakening can be stirred by a …show more content…
The setting is filled with the contrast of light and dark colors that appear in the background, skies, and lighting. These bring about certain emotions in the viewer. Gandalf and his horsemen charging into battle and illuminating the scene can be compared to how hope can repel despair. A best friend can help bring about hope, and in this movie Sam is distinctly the best friend archetype because of his enduring faithfulness towards Frodo. A best friend’s attributes mirror Sam’s; they are faithful, honest, and give wise counsel, which bring about hope in the friend. These basic human experiences related to hope and despair and faithfulness are portrayed through the commonly used, universally recognized archetypes of light and dark and the best
Depending on how they are used it can have a positive or negative impact on a film. Sam and Frodo make the movie what it is because their task but it's the Innate Wisdom vs. Educated Stupidity that really makes the movie special. Then you have Gollum, the outcast who comes in and makes the crowd feel for him with his loneliness and playfulness as Smeagol, but also gives the film mystery as the hating murderer Gollum. The Lord of the Rings has many more archetypes as almost every character has one or several of them that the viewers can relate to, or just pick out in the film. Not all films rely on archetypes as heavily as The Lord of the Rings series does but that is what makes them so great and interesting as a
John Steinbeck uses character, setting, and symbolism to represent sunlight and darkness throughout the novel. Light can be a source of uplifting energy, while darkness can be a source of descending energy in the novel. Imagery show´s how muscular Lennie is but inside he has a mind of a child. In the story, Of Mice and Men, the author uses the dark and light to lead up to the climax of the story. John Steinbeck uses dark and light to help the readers understand what everything symbolizes in the story.
Archetypes are institutionalized patterns that recur in art across all cultures and all times. The question may be where do you come across these ideas? A good way of showing these ideas are through all types of tv shows, movie and books. You can determine what the director is trying to get across through these patterns. The movie Shrek does a good job at showing the three main archetypes romance, comedy and satire.
An archetype is an image, a descriptive detail, a plot pattern, or a type of character that occurs multiple times in myth, literature, religion, or folk lore. Archetypes often provoke emotion in the reader as they awaken an image, calling illogical responses into play. Many novels, legends, and myth are made up of archetypes which causes similarities in the plots of many novels. For example, the Helper God, the golden place, seasons and metamorphosis are archetypes that make up modern literature and they make up prominent themes found within the novels containing those archetypes. Like these archetypes, the magical weapon archetype, which has only one true owner able to use it to its fullest potential, also is a prominent theme within literature and film creating a large part in the theme.
Archetypes Archetypes are in most books, movies, and audios there are. They bring ideas to life with a sense of imagery and meaning that would otherwise be dismal. Within a piece, archetypes make a story flow and move along with important meanings. In Avatar (the 2009 movie directed by James Cameron), there are multiple strong archetypes that add more meaningful and deeper thinking to the messages of the story. The specific situations and interpretations brought by archetypes are key factors to any piece of literature or film.
Hope can cause us to overcome what we believe may be impossible and give that same hope to others in the process. Hope can change our mindsets from everything is hopeless to, we can do anything. Another example of this is throughout the book, Marie-Laure is begging and pleading her great-uncle Etienne to come outside and go to the beach with her. He repeatedly says no because he is suffering from trauma after having fought in World War I. But after the bombing of St. Malo has ended and he has survived the bombing and being imprisoned, he tells Marie that he’ll move

but it also demonstrates how nature is unpretentious. This shows that a regular colour can be seen from a different perspective. It also uses juxtaposition because it uses a normal colour in a celestial place. Overall, the fact that the story begins by describing the setting makes
Like in his film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when the trucks were being loaded with boxes and everything was grey except the trucks. Also, when the winners were about to enter the Factory and the factory was grey on the outside but when you walked in it was colorful. Another one of his films that used low lighting was Edward Scissorhands when the castle was grey and dark, but the other houses were colorful and bright. In Alice and Wonderland, the Queen of Hearts castle was grey and scary on the outside, but her soldiers were bright red and the good queen’s castle was white. There were not only lighting techniques though, there were a lot of flashbacks.
Archetypes can be defined as recurrences or patterns found throughout life and culture, they are recognized by multiple sources and can be distinguished in a variety of forms. Modern versions of archetypes are often established through literature and media, however traditional archetypes were developed through stories or fables. One example of how modern day film and media display archetypes is portrayed throughout the movie The Blind Side by Michael L. Lewis. The story begins with a young black man named Michael who experienced a tough beginning in his early stages of life.
TASK 1: FILM STUDY ESSAY Lord of the Rings (2001-2003) and the later released The Hobbit (2012-2014) are fantastic fantasy adventure films directed by Peter Jackson. In this essay I will be talking about the techniques that are used to make the difference clear between the good and evil forces. For reference to identify between the good and evil, I will be using the Dwarves and Orc’s.
Chapter 12: 2. Calpurnia takes the kids to her church because she doesn’t trust Jem and Scout to go to church by themselves. There was a past incident involving tying up one of their Sunday School classmates in the furnace room. Atticus is away in Montgomery because he gets called into a special session of the state legislature and is away for two weeks. She takes pride in the Finch kids and wants this to be reflected when they visit church.
Therefore, the color can give audiences totally different feeling when the director use different type of color in different moments because the colors can present characters’ emotions even the characters do not need any

Tim Burton 's use of this helps show the contrast of the insider and outsider world. When the viewer is watching they get a sense of suspense and start to second guess whether or not they should trust the outsider. In Edward Scissorhands Burton uses a high-key low-key light contrast when Peg is in her car and sees Edward 's house in her side mirror. When the viewers are watching they get a frightened sense and wonder whether or not Edward or whomever is in the house will
