Through one’s life, a person may experience many situations that provoke intense emotional responses. Whether emotion is seen in the smile of a toddler or the mourning of a widow, there is no denying that emotions play a vital role in the everyday lives of humans. In fact, this role has become even more significant in recent years, for advertisers have created an industry out of the happiness and pleasure of consumers. They are constantly pushing the idea that one should always be happy. Then, when one is not happy, marketers try to persuade these consumers to buy products that should make them more positive. These ideas are irrelevant though, for feelings of sadness are virtually inevitable. All people experience these emotions at some point in their life whether they want to or not, and for that reason, society must learn to accept these gloomy states. As mentioned in the article “Don’t Worry, Be Gloomy,” many people believe that positive emotions are linked to a lower risk of illnesses, depression, anxiety, and other personality disorders (David 124). But, though this may be true, excessive feelings of positivity also are accompanied by many detrimental side effects. The article “Happiness: Enough Already” explains this idea more thoroughly by stating, “Being ‘up’ all the time can cause you to play down very real threats” (Begley 456). A positive state of mind may cause one to neglect dangers and act out more sporadically, for the person believes he or she is just living life to the fullest (David 124). This seems great until it leads to the end of one’s life. Instead of taking antidepressants or constantly pursuing this detrimental state of happiness, one should accept that sadness, anger, and other feelings of negativity are not bad, but they actually allow for one to grow and reach success in a more optimal
