Food waste has proved to be problematic on economical, ecological, and humanitarian levels. One third of the world food is wasted, and approximately one in seven people around the world is food insecure, with 2.5 million children death due to malnutrition , and the numbers are only expected to increase. It was proved that only wasted food is more than enough to ensure security for the more than 800 million hungry individuals around the world. The emission of harmful gases globally due to food waste exceeds 3.3 billion metric tons, which accounts for 7% of the gases that are causing the greenhouse effect. To make facts worst, more than 400$ billion is “wasted” due to excess food waste. Different suggestions were provided in order to tackle the issue, in this essay these suggestions will be examined.( , )
The first idea is about enforcing laws on supermarkets to give unsold food to charities. Some people suggest that supermarkets should be given a chance either to give the unsold food to charities or keeping it until it expires, if it becomes uneatable, then the supermarket is obliged to pay taxes for wasted food. Other people disagree, why would the supermarkets be forced to gamble? Why would supermarkets hold responsibilities if customers did not pay their goods? Is not it enough lost for the supermarkets that their goods are not sold? These are indeed reasonable arguments.
