Current Issues Paper
A crisis is being faced by both Europe, Africa, and the Middle East; creating drastic effects on life in both regions. The current instability in the Middle East, in regions like Syria or Yemen, have forced many to flee their homes in search of asylum, elsewhere. Countries in Europe, like Sweden and Germany have opened their borders to these refugees, but the trip to there is a treacherous journey, usually involving sailing across the Mediterranean. Some leave from Turkey, but others venture overland to find a closer trip to Europe. This has made Libya the refugee capital of the world, at this time, as a large portion of all refugees from the Middle East and Africa have traveled through there (Lee). Many refugees also come

After breaking off from the original Sudan in only 2011, the brand new, highly volatile country has become a breeding ground for terrorism and totalitarianist regimes (Leithead). The government has little control over its people as well as suffering from rampant corruption. This drove many South Sudanese people to flee. In Western and Central Africa, the Islamist insurgent group Boko Haram has forced many to flee their homes. Since its inception in 2002, Boko Haram has strived to form a highly fundamentalist islamic caliphate in the countries of Chad, Nigeria, Cameroon, as well as many other regions in Central and Western Africa (“Who Are Nigeria’s Boko Haram Islamist Group?”). By their standards, even moderate Muslims are considered to not be pious enough, forcing large populations of people to flee their homes under threat of death. In both ideals and methodology, Boko Haram draws many parallels to …show more content…
With the ever warming water temperatures, the amount of refugees passing across the Mediterranean will most definitely increase. This shall certainly bring more death, as many have died in this perilous expedition, and many more certainly will in the coming months. As well, the recent events in Syria will drive many to leave the country embark on the difficult journey through Africa in hopes of getting to Europe. ISIS has been gradually losing the fight in the Middle East, potentially forcing them to wish to gain power elsewhere. If this is to occur, Somalia will be where this take place, since they already have some influence there. The situation in Eritrea is highly likely to escalate in the next few months. The sheer number of refugees that they produce has already gained the attention of the U.N, potentially provoking an intervention akin to what occurred in nearby Somalia. Overall the refugee issue in Africa will continue to grow and escalate in the following months. It is not foreseeable that these events will cease to end in the coming years. It will most likely take a year or more for the raw underlying issues to be
However, certain refugees seek asylum in more wealthy countries where they could possibly build a future. Denmark being one of the most prospering countries in Europe, this attitude directly affects Denmark. Refugees should remain refugees and the integration of refugees remains an issue within the European Union. Denmark should respect the EU policies regarding the freedom of movement of people, however, Denmark should recognize the draining effects refugees have on the country. Therefore I suggest that it is made clear to international institutions that peacekeeping troops are to promote a resolution to the refugee
Also, many people are making their way to Europe because of all of the violence. A chart showed hundred of thousands of Syrian people making their way to europe. In document B it explains that a sectarian conflict is where two or more sects are fighting with one another. Sunnis and Alawites are fighting with each other during Syria’s
- “In Europe there are mixed opinions , some people are scared specifically of young men like you, who are travelling alone. There are a lot of people who say … you are coming to do problems in Europe, they are generally afraid of you,” Al Jazeera Journalist, Hoda Abdel-Hamid, asked a 27-year-old Iraqi refugee to response. - “I don’t think someone who travels all this way here, risking his own life, comes to cause problems. [He] is going to a country that recognizes his identity, humanity, his life and makes him feel he is a human being with rights.
”(South Sudanese refugees are flowing into Uganda at an unprecedented rate.) Of course, there are the people that would argue and say that they are letting refugees in. However they are turning away many more than they are welcoming in. Yet another reason to testify how people today do not bother to look around them and are instead wrapped up in what is going on in
The countries Libya, Iraq, Sudan and all of the other places the refugees of Clarkston came from were at one time very hospitable places and were capable of supporting good lives. The refugees were doing well there- they had family, culture, and in some cases, even wealth to be proud of. They knew how to properly discipline their kids. They had social lives and friends anyone could be happy with. They understood the proper way to socially interact with someone.
The estimated number of refugees leaving their own country since World War II is one hundred million ("Refugee”). A refugee is a person who has left their country because of fear of their safety due to violence, race, religion, or war. Supporting and solving today’s refugee crisis is especially controversial because of the current events, financing, and security issues. ("Refugee Facts”). Current Event Essay The 2016 presidential election has been one of the most prevalent events reported in the news for over a year, and it continues to be publicized by the media leading up to the inauguration of president-elect Donald Trump on January 20, 2017. This election process has been a very controversial issue in government because of the drastic differences in public opinion and the division it has caused in the public. Over the course of this semester, this topic has drastically grown and changed--through protests against Trump’s victory, recounts in close states, and lawsuits against the president-elect, to the now-issue of Trump’s possible conflict of interest between his business and his presidency.
The Syrian problem is growing into the biggest migration crisis in Europe. At the moment, there are over 9 million refugees seeking asylum. In 2012, when the refugees mostly fled to neighboring countries and Turkey,
Middle Eastern crisis has been a big issue not only in the area where the conflict is happening but also in the countries where refugees are escaping. The refugees move to different countries in order to stay away from the wars and to search better lives. A number of countries that refugees are tying to move into face difficulties accepting them recently. Each countries have different domestic problems, and until not overcoming those problems, it is hard to accept people from outside.
The crisis has been brewing for a long time, however, with the number of asylum claims in Europe increasing dramatically over the last few years and expected to rise further. The European Union is unlikely to introduce a substantial reform in its asylum policies. Without a comprehensive plan, Europe will continue reacting to events, triggering more domino effects as countries take uncoordinated unilateral steps to protect their interests. The main threat to the free movement of people in Europe is that emergency measures could become the new normal, progressively weakening the Schengen agreement to the point it becomes unrecognizable, just like the Dublin
All nations at one point have experienced a few different types of challenges in their history. America suffered through plenty of challenges throughout its history that have been overcome. America has been through many obstacles, but they were only realized after the problem was solved or confronted. These challenges include slavery, women’s rights, tyrants, terrorists, and innumerable more. Though confronted with challenges throughout America’s history, the main three obstacles in America today is the divisions between the public, sensitivity of some individuals, and sense of entitlement among some of the youth.
Thousands of Nigerians and foreign workers have left the country amid fears of post-election violence. Yet, millions still peacefully voted across Nigeria despite fear of attack from Boko Haram, during the most closely contested presidential race in the nation's history. Boko Haram attacks took place in northeastern Nigeria, where the military officials have officially cleared the Islamic extremists from all major centers, including the headquarters of their so-called Islamic caliphate (Boko). Early on Saturday, Boko Haram extremists invaded the town of Miringa in Borno state, torching people's homes and then shooting them as they tried to escape the smoke. Another set of people were killed in extremist attacks in Biri and Dukku, in Gombe state, according to police and local chief Garkuwan Dukku .
Furthermore, the Syrian Civil War has resulted in approximately 6.3 million Syrian refugees internally displaced in Syria and over 4.8 million Syrians have fled Syria. Another key point is that the total death toll is about 500,000 in Syria due to the ongoing conflict, and as a consequence of all the violence, it leaves many families separated (Durando 4). As Filippo Grandi stated: “Syria is the biggest humanitarian and refugee crisis of our time, a continuing cause of suffering for millions which should be garnering a groundswell of support around the world,” (Grandi 12). In other words, the Syrian civil war has been detrimental to societies across the world with refugees fleeing from the terror they lived
Anthony J. D 'Angelo. One thing is very clear: these few countries doing their best to help refugees can’t manage the refugee issue on their own. We need global cooperation. Therefore, the only solution is moving on to end the bloodbaths and poverty lakes while simultaneously accepting the humanitarian responsibility of taking in the refugees. Migration is a global issue.
