The characters were never viewed purely on the terms of their own potential and capacity of doing the things and on the terms of reason and understanding as thought out by the characters for themselves. However, with the rise of the genre of novels in literary fiefdom, the individual came to be viewed from close quarter and the reason and psychology behind his words and actions came to be introspected upon. The device of plot structure in the novel which combines in all to give an organic wholeness to the novel and the element of subjectivity as introduced for the characterization of the characters in the novel demanded individualisation of the characters. The purposefulness of action of the character in the light of his or her own practical reason to the exclusion of metaphysical or religious concerns alone came to be taken into consideration in the novel.
