Most people will come and go in life friends, strangers, and pets to name a few but the people who will never leave you are family. Family members have a sort of sacred bond people outside from them don't normally have. Even when families fight they almost always seem to make up because they love each other, and even when those family members don't express their love with words they do with their actions. During the yellow fever outbreak in Philadelphia the Cook family is put through some tough times infection, loss, thievery, and much more than any one family should have to go through, but the one thing that never changes is their love for each other. My first piece of evidence comes soon after Mattie and Grandfather are thrown off the wagon and have their stuff taken with it on the way to Ludington's when Grandfathers heart starts to act up and guards mistake it for the fever. While Grandfather is sleeping under a tree they found in the nearby woods Mattie goes out of her way to gather some berries and water for her and mostly her grandpa. I see this as Mattie's way of trying to make her grandpa feel better again and you just don't that for people you don't care about. The second piece of evidence is also happens during this part of the story. While looking down at her grandpa's sleeping body she feels a strong emotional like pain. Mattie mentions that she has to force back the tears and bite her cheek to stop her from crying. This shows her love for her Grandfather and that hurts her to see him in this condition. My last piece of evidence comes after Mattie and her Grandpa return to Philadelphia after Mattie is done recuperating from the yellow fever. Once Mattie and her Grandpa are back in Philadelphia they go along with their day and do their best to keep on keeping on but when night falls Mattie made the mistake of keeping the window open, and robbers get in and beat up Grandpa when he is trying to defend Mattie. Even though Mattie manages to chase off the robbers Grandpa is still to far to save, But in his final moments Mattie does everything she can to comfort him while trying to fight back the tears. When people you don't know very well or don't care about die you don't have the feeling of grief otherwise you would be in a perpetual state of depression so when Mattie is having these emotions during her Grandfathers death it shows that she truly cared about and loved him.
