In the novel The Maltese Falcon, the motif of greed is used to exemplify the destructive influence potential wealth has on one’s morals. This is shown through Sam Spade’s decision to hand over Brigid to the authorities, Brigid’s deceit throughout the novel, and Gutman's choice to use Wilmer as the fall man to avoid his own prosecution for crimes committed. Sam is portrayed as someone who is willing to deviate from the law, is extremely intellectual, and is prepared to go to any extent in order to get the treasure he desires. Sam Spade is entangled in the pursuit after the falcon by Brigid’s scheming. Sam falls in love with Brigid even after he discovers her dishonesty. Sam detects that Brigid is the one that killed his partner, Archer. Sam
The Maltese Falcon has inspired several novels and writers, like Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain, and Jonathan Lethem, and it all started with Sam Spade.

Athanasourelis’s article depicts Sam Spade’s individuality through his actions leading up to Brigid O’Shaughnessy’s conviction. Sam’s initial intentions are to help Brigid avoid the police. Upon coming to the conclusion that Brigid is the only suspect in the murder of Archer, Sam knows he has to turn her into the authorities. The article discusses that although it may seem as if Sam is acting justly, he is truly just turning Brigid in to avoid his own persecution for the crimes others committed. Hammett establishes Sam’s morals frequently throughout the novel by further describing his character as a “hard-boiled detective”.
Throughout the book there are many different sins that the people of Maycomb show. The whole town is full of everything wrong with society many of the characters represent how we are failing in life while a few others show what we are doing right. From racism to being rude to people who are different this book outs everything that we have done wrong with history and all the mockingbirds that we have killed. Racism is a misdeed that keeps on showing up in the book, Calpurnia keeps on showing Jem and Scout about how the African American society is treated.
In The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, one of the many characters, the Pardoner, takes advantage of people’s vices and ignorance, preaching against avarice, a sin which he does not feel guilty of committing. The Pardoner in The Canterbury Tales speaks of greed as “the root of all sin” and of himself as doing “Christ’s holy work”; although, he “practices” avarice himself he has no guilt of his thievery. The Pardoner deceives the towns people by falsifying professionalism by “speak[ing] a few works in Latin” and displaying his “bishop’s seal” on his “license” disguising himself as a trustworthy person.
Being an evil villain can lead to many horrible disasters and problems, especially when you have everything in the whole wide world, you feel entitled to be better than anyone else. Selfishness is the worst trait to have because no one will trust or like you. Sometimes people just care about themselves to get what they want. In the famous novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, he explains how money can drive people to being greedy and careless of others particularly their loved ones through characterizations of Daisy Buchanan. Daisy is a self- absorbed, vacuous socialite whose decisions lead to destruction of both Jay Gatsby and Myrtle Wilson.
These are all traits that would describe Walter Lee and his actions. Walter Lee is a character from the play A Raisin in the Sun in which a black family tries to get out of poverty and go against stereotypes by trying to start over with their Grandpa’s life insurance money. A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry explores the concept that greed leads to being blinded by money and forgetting about one’s loved ones as shown by the climax of the play, the character of Walter Lee, and the effect that his actions have on the rest of his family. The Character of Walter Lee shows that greed blinding a person can cause him to forget about the ones he loves.
Blind Ambition and Greed The play “Macbeth”, by William Shakespeare illustrates many themes through the characters from the beginning to the end of the story. But the main central theme introduced is Ambition and Greed. As the play goes on we read how Macbeth permits his Ambition and Greed to dictate the outcomes and tragedy’s that occur to himself and others.
In the story The Book Thief, the reader learns how sometimes behind darkness, hatred, and violence, there is love, passion, and connections. The author reveals this theme throughout the story by showing the evil side of people and also showing the careful side of people. For example, we see Liesel and Rudy actions of violence, theft, and hatred throughout the book. For example, we find Liesel and Rudy raiding an apple farm, Liesel getting into fights, thievery of Rudy stealing things from other people, and of course, Liesel thievery of books. But deep down inside, they are amazing people.
Greed is a very prominent theme of The Maltese Falcon; it seems the author was trying to express this theme by showing how ruthless humans are when seeking to obtain substantial wealth or something they value very highly. The author uses
Greed for power has always been evil and even made a saint turn into a demon. As the quote goes “All power tends to corrupt and an absolute power corrupts absolutely” (unquote), which is true not only in the fictitious stories but also in real life and Shakespeare, th9e greatest writer ever known, has always been in habit of making fictitious character come alive and Macbeth is no exception to the rule. The character of Macbeth has two sides, one which is wholesome while other been dubious. He symbolized great ambition but went overboard and in the process not only became corrupt but also became a killer. Macbeth reflects great strength but within he has his own weakness and thus good over took evil resulting in its downfall and finally his own death.
The theme I created for Death and the Miser is “Greed will ultimately lead to your demise.” This theme shows how the Miser’s greed throughout his life led to his death. The miser was a fighter of some sort, but then he became a part of the church, shown by the rosary in his hand and the indulgences in his chest, which I believe were fake, and he was selling them. The Miser’s greed led to his death and, even in his final hours, he was trying to buy his way into heaven by giving gold to the demon by his bed. The two genres I chose to connect Death and the Miser to are the well-known belief of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden because Eve’s greed of eating the forbidden fruit led to her and Adam being cursed by God, and an artwork titled Haywain
Later on Sam leaves the house with the Brown Bess and
