“‘If you shouldn’t be defendin’ him, then why are you doin’ it?’ ‘For a number of reasons,’ said Atticus. ‘The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this country in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again’” (Lee 100).
He would rather sacrifice his friend that is the most loyal person to him, then keep being emotionally cut off by his father. This triangle is created by the conflict between Amir and Baba, and Baba’s secret relationship with Hassan, his
“Moral courage is the highest expression of humanity…” (Nader).Ralph Nader illustrates his opinion on what he thinks moral courage is. Many people in the book “ To kill a Mockingbird” and the articles show moral courage. For example both Atticus and Malala demonstrate moral courage by standing up for other people's rights as well as their own. Moral courage is people who are willing to take risks for the good of others and those who both have leadership. Moral courage is shown in Atticus when he is risking himself for Tom Robinson and same with Malala when she is standing up for her right to go to school, this shows moral courage because they are not doing this for the attention they are doing this for the good of others.
Throughout the story Jem realizes that he shouldn’t judge people until he understands them. Throughout the story Scout,Jem, and Dill learn important life lessons and mature as people as the story goes on. At the beginning of the story Charles Baker Harris known as Dill was a sweet innocent little kid who wanted to do everything on impulse without thinking about the consequences. Throughout the novel To Kill a Mockingbird Dill learns the harsh reality of real life. He realizes that life is not as fair as it should be after the trial the trial of Tom Robinson and how people accused him of rape because he was black, even though he was clearly innocent and there was no solid evidence to prove him guilty.
Beowulf is actually an orphan, so he might be destined not to find his place in this society. However, thanks to his courage and good will, he is almost “adopted” by Hrothgar, who trusts him simply because he trusted his father. This is the reason for his “open-hearted sermon” to Beowulf. 3. Hrothgar’s warning on the fragility of life: hubris is Beowulf’s flaw
He saved him because he felt this was morally correct. He did not lose his innocence or “sivilize” himself towards societal standards or even as an
After Bob Ewell, the prosecutor of Tom Robinson, attacks the children and dies in the attempt, Atticus refuses to cover it up because he, “‘Don’t want him growing up with a whisper about him, I don’t want anybody saying, [...] Sooner we get this over with the better’” (Lee 366). Atticus would not let the local sheriff say that Jem did not kill Bob Ewell because he thought that Jem did at the time, and wants his kids to know that they should be treated like the rest of the community. Before that, when Atticus was defending Tom Robinson, he was telling the jury that the opposition had lied because they were, “‘confident that you gentlemen would go along with them on the assumption—the evil assumption—that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women’”
Atticus Finch has showed us what real courage is through the novel, and Harper Lee shows us how true courage is needed in society to fight ignorance and hatred. {Intro) In the book to kill a mockingbird Harper lee uses the kids to show us how the definition of bravery matures and grows, as the children get older. [Clear topic sentence] In the beginning of the story, the children idea of bravery is very simple and elementary, touching the side of the Radley house was the bravest thing to do, and then it changed to never decline a dare no matter what.
Try fighting with your head for a change.” In other words Atticus, Scout’s father is telling her not to worry or care what people think but to not use violence to fight back to use her head and ignore them to keep her head high. Scout learns that instead of making her life hard and hurtful listening to people insult her father, to just ignore the people’s opinion. The motif in the chapter it shows us that Scout doesn’t need her fists to defend her family.
and Atticus are examples of courage in To Kill a Mockingbird, demonstrated by their benevolent acts of kindness and equality, and how they didn’t let what the status quo at the time dictate their opinions. In the beginning, Walter Cunningham did conform to racist beliefs of the town and ignored the evidence that proved Tom's innocence, but he realizes he is wrong, and preaches that Tom be acquitted while he sits on the jury. Atticus is one of the people to sway Walter Cunningham to believe in equality. Atticus convinces him, and other people, to believe in the evidence that all proved Tom's innocence, and through him and Walter a small racist town begins to change little by little. The movement of equality has been going on since before the civil war in the 1860s, today, people would like to say we are equal, but with court cases like Trayvon Martin attracting so much controversy, it shows that society still has a long way to
Barret, upon doing her research about Ison and his situation can see that Hobart was doing the right thing, but did it in the wrong way. Yes, Hobart is outspoken about what he believes and his pride, but murdering someone is not how he could have shown it. It is important to tell this story and show people the lives of those living in Northern Kentucky. They are not poor, ignorant hillbilly. Barret saw it necessary to show that they are capable of handling themselves and do not need the extra help as they are strong enough to take care of themselves.
He explains that although he shouldn’t be defending him, he does it for Scout and Jem. His main reason to defend him is because he wants to prove his role as a lawyer and as a father. He says, “I could never ask you to mind me again” (Lee 100) to Scout because if he doesn’t stay loyal and respectful as a lawyer, he can’t display a good role model for her and Jem. Atticus is a honorable lawyer and father who stays true to his duties no matter what they are. Mrs. Dubose presents bravery for living through a disease.
