Racism is the act of being unjust and being unnecessarily discriminatory towards someone just because of their ancestral roots, the colour of their skin or the language in, which they speak. Racism is a very evident theme continuously throughout the film ‘Remember the Titans’ directed by Boaz Yakin as well as the book ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ written by Harper Lee. The two stories are set approximately 40 years apart in small towns in separate states. To Kill a Mockingbird is narrated by Jean Louise ‘Scout’ Finch whom is a young white girl caught up in a horrible time in US history where African Americans had almost no civil rights. With To Kill a Mockingbird we can clearly see how much harsher society is to minorities than it is in Remember the Titans. This is made very apparent when Bob Ewell leads a lynch mob with the intent to kill Tom Robinson in prison. Whilst in regards to Coach Boone’s case his is much more insubstantial as the largest ‘attack’ against him was the throwing of a brick through his window as well as a lot of veiled threats. Discrimination due to racism is also very evident in both films against white people from either black people or white racists. This is made obvious in To Kill a Mockingbird when many of the white townsfolk begin to refer to Atticus Finch as a ‘Nigger Lover’ all because he had chosen to defend Tom Robinson. We can also see this discrimination against the whites at the T.C. Williams High School when the white students begin to objectify the white football players after they had gained companionship with the black football players. Although this discrimination against the whites wasn’t as severe as it was to the blacks it was still an existing prejudice based on race that was apparent in both of the
