Racism is the act of being unjust and being unnecessarily discriminatory towards someone just because of their ancestral roots, the colour of their skin or the language in, which they speak. Racism is a very evident theme continuously throughout the film ‘Remember the Titans’ directed by Boaz Yakin as well as the book ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ written by Harper Lee. The two stories are set approximately 40 years apart in small towns in separate states. To Kill a Mockingbird is narrated by Jean Louise ‘Scout’ Finch whom is a young white girl caught up in a horrible time in US history where African Americans had almost no civil rights. With To Kill a Mockingbird we can clearly see how much harsher society is to minorities than it is in Remember the Titans. This is made very apparent when Bob Ewell leads a lynch mob with the intent to kill Tom Robinson in prison. Whilst in regards to Coach Boone’s case his is much more insubstantial as the largest ‘attack’ against him was the throwing of a brick through his window as well as a lot of veiled threats. Discrimination due to racism is also very evident in both films against white people from either black people or white racists. This is made obvious in To Kill a Mockingbird when many of the white townsfolk begin to refer to Atticus Finch as a ‘Nigger Lover’ all because he had chosen to defend Tom Robinson. We can also see this discrimination against the whites at the T.C. Williams High School when the white students begin to objectify the white football players after they had gained companionship with the black football players. Although this discrimination against the whites wasn’t as severe as it was to the blacks it was still an existing prejudice based on race that was apparent in both of the

About a year and a half ago, my brother and I were at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp during the summer. I was talking with one of my buddies in the camp about the religion I practice, when suddenly a camp counselor tapped me on my shoulder. I turned around and he had the most utterly confused look on his face I’d ever seen. He actually asked me without a doubt in his mind, “Wait? If you’re Jewish then where's your horns?”
In the film Remember the Titans, racial prejudice and stereotypes are evident throughout. At the start of the movie we are taken back to 1971 where we are introduced to the town of Alexandria in Virginia and the new high school that resides in it, as two schools recently combined to form one desegregated student body called T.C. Williams High School. Football is an immense part of this town and for the people residing there. Shortly into the film, head football Coach Bill Yoast, nominee for the Virginia High School Hall of Fame, is demoted to assistant football coach and the school board hires an African American man by the name of Herman Boone to take his place. This starts an uproar in the Alexandria community as desegregation hadn't been
Violent abuse of the African American race sparked the Civil Rights movement. The movement defined the struggle that people of not only color, but all different walks of life. The integration in schools caused both races to form a realization that they aren’t different through a common interest like football. In Remember the Titans discrimination happens a lot with black students being told to go back home to Africa and during this time of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s and 70’s; this sparked controversy between the adults in this story and were concerned about the future of their kids with these new black families were forced to move into these white neighborhoods during this time. Additionally, it introduces a pattern in the book where white men seem determined to use their social status to humiliate black men and women. This can be seen when the school superintendent comes to Grant’s class,

The novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” was written in 1960 by Harper Lee in the point of view of a young innocent girl named Scout. One of the main messages that Lee has (need a new word than – indicated or set out) is racism, it plays an important role which strongly impacts many character’s lives unfairly and changes the relationship between two. Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird” shows that it is wrong to hurt someone who does no harm to you, for example, black people are innocent but no way did they have as many rights as white people did. Black people lived hard lives because society was judgemental, irrational and most importantly, racist. As Scout and Jem grow older they learn to cope, take responsibility and are introduced to new aspects of life, one of which is racism.
In modern day society, racial injustice has a big impact in this world today, as stated in Just Mercy and To Kill a Mockingbird. Showing that they are both related in many ways. In the early years of Disney films there have been a lot of controversial problems about the company’s output in relations to ethnic and cultural diversity. Johnson Cheu states, that “Every author has his or own approach to the filmic history of Disney as it relates to the films they are examining. A board overview of who Disney is or a chorological overview of the nearly hundred years of Disney’s filmic output is unnecessary (Cheu, 4)”. With Walt Disney’s films being a controversial output this allowed Gregory Allen Howard to use the film Remember the Titans as way to portray the message of racial understanding and human compassion. Aurora Young Mrs. Austin Honors English I-AoIT 1, May 2017 Racial Inequality and Injustice in To Kill a Mockingbird Racism is an unrestrained force that plagues the society of today. It provides heavily opinionated theories, whether they are positive or negative, about all races.
The theme of marginalization in society and how it has impacted on people’s lives is a significant theme for all. Marginalization is where a certain group of people are treated differently than others due to their race, gender or beliefs. The marginalized are not usually considered “main stream”, which means to have the power in society, and thus have no say in how you are treated. We see this theme in four texts, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, To Kill a Mockingbird directed by Robert Mulligan (1962), The Test by Angelica Gibbs and The Worn Path by Eudora Welty. Each of my selected texts has a character who is marginalized (Crooks & Tom Robinson & Marian & Phoenix Jackson) and is considered not part of the mainstream of society, consequently
