The Sniper written by Liam O’Flaherty is about a man that is on the lookout on top of a building and when he finally claims a victim, the corpse reveal is his brother. The Scarlet Ibis by by James Hurst is about two brothers that are birds and one is crippled. The normal brother is embarrassed of his crippled brother so he teaches him to walk. One day, they were running through a storm and the normal one left his crippled brother back. When the brothers guilt finally drives him back to get him, he has already passed. Both have similar themes of guilt and regret. They both also have different points of view of war.
The Scarlet Ibis is more of an emotional war rather than an actual war in The Sniper. The brother in Scarlet Ibis an emotional war because he is embarrassed by Doodle and gets really frustrated with him if he doesn't do perfect. He also didn’t help Doodle to walk because he felt sorry, he did it because it bothered him how much of a hassle he was to him. The text states “They did not know that I did it for myself; that pride, whose slave I was, spoke to me louder than all their voices, and that Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother.” The Sniper is a physical war and more and about a civil war in Ireland. Each of the two stories have many likenesses and differences, in addition to focusing on the three same ideas. These three ideas are war, brotherhood, and regret. The war in “The Sniper” is an actual war.
During the short story, Brother relentlessly pushes Doodle to see him improve and defy his disabilities. To begin, Brother’s persistent ambitions first became evident when Brother first began to teach Doodle how to walk. Brother becomes agitated by Doodles supposed lack of effort, so Brother “took him by the arms and stood him up. He collapsed onto the grass like a half-empty flour sack.
As the narrator started teaching doodle he picked him and tried to place him on his feet and feel and doodle said don't hurt me brother, then the narrator said shut up to doodle. He said this because the was embarrassed of his brothe r. He kept pushing doodle and doodle kept falling and it never worked. The narrator wanted to push him so he could just stand up. Even the doctor had said it is almost impossible for doodle to walk.

This theme of not doubting yourself is shown when Brian was on the plane during and after the plane crash when he wanted to end his life, and right before he was rescued.
Brother has received a younger sibling, though he is not the brother of his dreams. Brother feels disappointed in his invalid brother, Doodle, so he teaches him to live a fuller life. I think the theme of "Hatchet" is to persevere through life even if itś very hard. I think this because Brian had to survive a plane crash and live by himself on an island with nothing but a little food and wood. This shows that and perservering through life is most likely the theme.
