How Gore Affects The Odyssey
This essay will be explaining why the use of violence in The Odyssey is sometimes needed and shows purpose.
Homer
The Odyssey
The odyssey is a story of Odysseus’ 10 year adventure to get home after the trojan war. Facing mythical beasts and the wrath of gods.
I think that The Odyssey shows violence in such a way that it moves the story forward drastically and adds new details.
I think that The Odyssey displays violence in a way that explains so much more about what's happening while also giving you a visual you can somewhat picture.
My point is that, in short, the way that the odyssey displays violence is more poetic than it is gorey.
I feel like this quote from when odysseus kills the cyclops fits in perfectly with what I have been explaining. “Nobody’s kiling me now by fraud and not by force.” and the next line “If you’re alone, and nobodys trying to overpower you now–look, it must be a plague sent here by mighty Zeus and there’s no escape from that.”

All of the details make up a pretty solid picture in my head of whats happening inside of the cave.
Another scene I think of when I think violence in The Odyssey is when Odysseus kills the
These pages from The Odyssey set an adventurous yet determined tone that is communicated by the antithetical; savagery versus purity. From the beginning, Homer starts off with a comparison by using metaphors and imagery. Lines 113-124 depict a land full of the immense and wild Cyclops. He describes how unkept and uncivilized they are by saying, “...without a law to bless them.”
The ‘Odyssey’ is a well known book based around Greek myths and Odysseus’ journey back home as he attains help from the Gods. In ‘The Odyssey’, Homer is able to use figurative language to express a recurring theme of vengeance. In Homer's ‘Odyssey’, he manages to express a theme of vengeance by how Odysseus is struggling with the consequences of revenge and how he deals with that. In book twenty-two Odysseus confronts the suitors about trying to seduce his wife while he was gone, when he reveals himself as Odysseus some of the suitors immediately try to compensate for the wrongs they’ve done.
Odysseus tells the maids that once they clean up the dead suitors they themselves are going to be killed. This is brutal because once he kills the maids who will look after his house. These two examples show how Odysseus uses brutal force to restore justice back to
There are some major conflicts in the Odyssey. In the story Odysseus comes across situations that he thinks he can take advantage of because he thinks he can get away with doing things. Because he thinks so highly of himself and he is useduse to others thinking highly of himself, he gets into some major conflicts. In the Odyssey it states, “Ah how shameless- the way these mortals blame the gods. From us alone, they say, come all their miseries, yes, but they themselves, with their own reckless ways, compound their pains beyond their proper share” (Homer 32-35).
In the book the Odyssey, people broke into Odysseus 's house and tried to get his wife to marry them. They used is belongings for themselves, they broke into his house, and they tried to take the throne from him before even knowing if he was dead or not. In my perspective their punishment we 're not too severe they deserved to be punished for their actions. They threatened his wife and try to force her to marry them. Considering all that the Wooers did whether it was stealing, breaking, or forcing others to do what they told them to they all deserved what they got.
Odysseus has just killed Antinous, blood has soaked everything around them, showing the gory end to his life. The passage where Antinous is murdered uses imagery because it paints a vivid picture in your head about what is happening. The quote displayed describes in great detail the death of Antinous without exhibiting much telling. Puffins version of The Odyssey, by Geraldine Mccaughrean, Tells the story very concisely, rather than showing it in detailed events. Odysseus, disguised as a beggar, tells Penelope’s suitors that he can bend the bow of King Odysseus.
The emphasis of The Odyssey is to exemplify the woes of men, whether it be sex, marriage, murder, lust, stealing, or lying. Odysseus travels to the Underworld to be cleansed for his return home. A lot of the details of the Underworld in The Odyssey are left to the audience’s imagination. We are led to believe that it is much worse than the physical world by Achilles ’s quote in Book 11.
This simile increases the way the Cyclops is seen as powerful figure. The example of figurative language here makes the audience imagine the scene in their minds therefore enriching the description of the scene. These descriptions help the text as a whole feel more immediate to the reader. This has enabled The Odyssey to transcend the test of
Odyssey Argumentative Essay The Odyssey is an epic by Homer. It is a story about Odysseus journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War. All the Greek heroes had returned home after the Trojan War except for Odysseus who was an important hero in Ithaca. Odysseus was absent in his son’s life and Telemachus decided that, it was time to find his father and bring him back home to his wife Penelope.
In the beginning of the Odyssey Odysseus and his men are leaving the city of Troy happy to go home. Next, they run into trouble and get attacked by giants! In the middle of the story Odysseus gets stranded on a island and is stuck with a strange woman. In the process of all this some people think that he has died and suitors have come to remarry the queen Penelope! Luckily in the end Odysseus gets home and kills all the suitors so he can be king once again.
This book in The Odyssey mainly highlights the absolute massacre of the suitors in the hall performed by Odysseus. In my group, I had been assigned the category of effectiveness. Similar to most if not all books in The Odyssey, book 22 contains several instances of figurative language to spice the story up. Not only that, but the book can detail many events in-depth, giving it a more drawn-out and emphasized feel. For example, before Antinous is killed by Odysseus, the book is quoted, “the cup was in his finger; the wine was even at his lips; did he dream of death?”(Homer 22, 8-10).
Odyssey Violence Motifs Gonzalo Teijeiro Martin Write a paragraph on the motifs behind violence in the odyssey with a quote In the Odyssey, violence is a recurring motif that is used to depict the struggles of the characters as they navigate the challenges of their world. One of the most prominent examples of this is the violence that is inflicted upon Odysseus and his crew by the Cyclops Polyphemus. This violent encounter is a clear representation of the dangers that the characters must face on their journey, as well as the power of the gods to shape the fate of mortals. " But the Cyclops, with a wrenching scream, tore loose the top of a high mountain and flung it, and the rock came hurtling down with a thunderous crash" (The Odyssey, Book
There are many themes in both O Brother where Art Thou and the Odyssey which seem to be strongly similar. Many similarities between the characters and their actions surface through their actions. In my essay I will not only compare and contrast the most important elements of the mentioned works, but will also discuss the importance of heroic figures and the less favored themes, such as revenge and foolish fearlessness. It is important to note that both works are taken place during hard times. Odysseus’ journey is dated around 1200 BCE, or the ‘Dark Age’.
In the epic poem The Iliad by Homer, The Iliad’s premise surrounds Achilles anger, the Trojan war, and the god’s influence on it all. Homer uses literary devices to convey the glory and/or horror of war. Through the use of graphic imagery and sympathetic backstory Homer exemplifies the theme of the horror of war. Homer writes about the horror and gore and battle using graphic imagery, bringing out the worst in every man.
Homer delivers very universal themes, such as loyalty is respected, but the epic also provides meaningful themes that are not as recognizable. The Odyssey is very focused on leadership and courage, as it centers on a hero's journey. There are many parts in the epic where Homer explains the actions of an admirable leader. In the Odyssey, Odysseus exemplifies the true meaning of being a leader through courage in the face of danger, which is shown by Circe, the Sirens, and the suitors. One might wonder why it takes Odysseus ten years to return to his homeland after he has achieved victory for Ithaca in the Trojan War.
