The Nurse of the Future (NOF) Core Competencies Models were choosing to achieve one optimal goal of providing quality of care to patients and their families. The NOF Nursing Core Competency provides a normal structured of approach to nursing and patient care, and they are all equally important in their unique ways. However, out of the 10 Nurse of the Future Core Competencies, I have chosen Healthcare professionalism and quality improvement which in my opinion are two main core outstanding competencies. Professionalism in any profession dictates the conduct, purpose, or qualities that define a profession.
a. This portfolio shows the educational journey through the BSN program at Western Governors University(WGU). The curriculum at WGU was very challenging, nonetheless it prepared me to become a safe and effective nurse. The BSN curriculum provided avenues to keep me up to date with safe practices and learn how to master therapeutic communication. WGU also helped me sharpen my critical thinking skills in order to make decisions quickly and provide safe and effective care to patients. As the result of my training, I am ready to embark in the field of nursing and do my best to make a difference in my patients lives.
Nevertheless, I applied to the University of Texas at Arlington’s nursing program and was accepted in Fall 2014. That opened the doors to countless opportunities for me to find my spark. Through my lectures and clinical rotations, I was taught that being a nurse meant ensuring the safety of every patient and working arduously to maintain their quality of life. With that principle in mind, I practiced my skill as a nursing student on every unit that I was assigned to.
Obtaining certification in a specialty area is one way a nurse confirms she has achieved the necessary knowledge and skill within that practice area to be considered above average (Rauen, Shumate, & Gendron-Trainer, 2016). In order to realize my goal of board certification as a master’s prepared informatics nurse, I must first gain the required education, expertise, and competence through classes and practice experiences. My childhood initiated a desire to help prevent and mitigate injury or illness; this soon flourished into an interest in the health care field. To help narrow my choices I explored as many science courses as I could. Talking with health care professionals and reading nursing textbooks I found in my aunt’s house piqued my interest in the nursing field and patient care. From there, I completed a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course which further solidified my decision. Now, I am fully invested in becoming a nurse.
The intended audience is aspiring nurses who want to go further than being an RN. The author explains her journey starting as a registered nurse and ending with pursuing a Ph.D. or doctorate in nursing. This article is to inspire students to keep going in accomplishing their goals. The author explains that getting started was the hardest part. But she did not stop there.
My experience working on PCU/telemetry unit and surgical/trauma unit did not only allow me to obtain knowledge on various different medical conditions and surgeries, it also assisted me with my organization skills and time management. As a leader working as a charge nurse and a preceptor, I am autonomous and able to multitask. Also from working with various different healthcare professionals, I am aware of different roles each healthcare team members play in the process of patient care. The advancement in medical science, technology and complexity of the current patient care, demands the nurses to be prepared with the knowledge and skills in Assessment and Intervention, Effective Communication, Critical Thinking, Patient Relationship, Leadership, Management and Teaching. As the required competency increases, the curriculum needs to prepare the nursing graduates to have these core competencies as outlined by COPA model (Competency Outcomes and Performance Assessment)” (Lenburg, 1999 a, b). The BSN curriculum is tailored to accommodate these professional development requirements, the modern era demands that incorporate a broad scope of practice, giving a better edge in competency compared to an ADN, especially in Critical Thinking. A noteworthy point is that the differences in clinical competencies of a BSN and ADN are few compared to management, leadership, decision making and communication competencies.

The Finger Lakes Health College of Nursing is an accredited school that offers a comprehensive education with the mindset focused on success. Integrated learning is built into the curriculum based on the foundation of Liberal Arts and Sciences. With these foundations, students have a better understanding, and are prepared for achievement. As a nursing student, I have a grasp on what nursing is through textbooks and lectures. The more I learn about this profession, the more I learn about what my philosophy is. Although I haven’t gained clinical experience as a nurse, I have gained some clinical experience as a nurse assistant that helps me administer patient care while acquiring knowledge working under the supervision of nurses. This experience helps me to become knowledgeable on what their roles and responsibilities are, and it has inspired me that I hope when I graduate, to equal their skill, diligence and passion.
I want to express my gratitude to the nursing department for the opportunity to be readmitted into the Appalachian State bachelor of science in nursing program for the spring 2018 semester. Learning form my instructors, especially through my interactions involving patients and other healthcare providers has influence my decision to continue studying with the Nursing program. Subjects involving Nursing and Medicine are more interesting to me now that I could witness them during my clinical experiences.
