The Price Of Seizing The Day Analysis
In the short story “The Price of Seizing the Day” written by Margaret Murphy, we are introduced to a middle-aged woman, who on one regular day receives an electronic mail from her former high-school boyfriend, Jed Cunningham. According to the narrator, Jed Cunningham was a handsome alluring poet and lived his life on his own terms. This could also be seen in the following quotation: “He was an old head on young shoulders, who stood apart and watched the world mockingly, making his teachers uneasy” In this quotation, we perceive how intellectual Jed is for his age; even his teachers are intimidated by his way of thinking. Although an adolescent, Jed believes that he has the fundamental knowledge in order to understand the basis of life. He …show more content…
In the first place, we understand how significant the results and consequences are for seizing the day. This could also be further discussed with the help of the following quotation: “You sound a bit mad” “Quite probably. I live alone, you see” Here we discover how Jed lives a sad and lonely life. He abandoned his responsibilities, and chased his fictive dream, yet he ended up being alone without anyone or anything. In addition to our understanding, the theme of the story is presented clearly; sometimes it’s not about how important the destination is, nonetheless of our decisions on the road of success. The narrator chose to take the difficult road associated with many responsibilities in order to achieve success, whereas Jed took the easy way without any particular aims for the future. As the title suggests, the message of the story is to understand the “the price of seizing the day”, moreover, the consequences that associate it. The writer gives the readers a message also concerning decisions and responsibilities. It’s not always the easy and fun road that will necessarily lead to a happy life, but sometimes it’s hard work and life goals that tend to pay off, which it did in the narrator’s case.
