“Jenna wasn 't supposed to survive the accident but she did.” The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson is set in the future in California. Jenna was in a serious accident and just woke up from a year long coma with no memories. This is a science fiction book. Science fiction is a book or movie that has certain types of elements like advanced technology or futuristic setting. The three elements of science fiction, futuristic setting, advanced technology, and special powers demonstrate the theme of acceptance. The first element of science fiction in this book is Futuristic Setting. This is important to the theme because it creates a problem that the society needs to deal with. One way this story shows it is set in the future is when Jenna saw a grave from 1823 and said it was over 200 years old. “I see one marker that dates back to 1823, the numbers almost weathered away. Over two hundred years later and still remembered” (Pearson, 35). This quote shows there is a futuristic setting because she talked about how the marker was from 1823 and it was over 200 years old so it would be somewhere around 2023 in her time. This is important to the story because if it wasn 't set in the future Jenna would have died from the car crash. Another way the story shows it is set in the future is when Jenna’s grandma tells her about how there was a big earthquake that caused part of California to sink into the ocean. “Fifteen years ago. Southern California. Nineteen thousand people died.

According to the text, this can lead to the theme being too overtly stated or developed. A selection of writing by Flannery O’Connor is included which carries the same message, that theme should be subtly present throughout a story. Then, the authors critique Upton Sinclair’s
As Helen Keller once quoted, “Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.” Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken tells the life story of Louis “Louie” Zamperini. Through his troubles as a child, emerged a strong-willed Olympic runner, who later became a military aviator. He was lost at sea and then captured by the Japanese as a prisoner of war. The foreshadowing that happens throughout the story points to the interconnectedness of all actions. The example of the hand and the time machine, as well as others, plant the idea of interconnectedness before the reader even knows the outcome of the story. This is effective in predisposing the reader to the theme. The preview of the theme through foreshadowing makes the reader interpret the plot more clearly as the story concludes. Ultimately, this leads the reader to a realization that all actions, no matter how big or small, shape the

“Phenomenal Woman” Phenomenal Woman, by Maya Angelou is an inspiring poem that encourages women, including myself to be confident and to love themselves just the way they are. It encourages women to be independent and confident despite what others think about them, especially men.
