There are many examples of theme in Touching Spirit Bear. One of the themes included in Touching Spirit Bear is acceptance. Throughout this book acceptance is shown throughout the book by characters taking responsibility and accepting the consequences for their actions. Other ways of acceptance include others accepting the personality and the behaviors of other characters. In the text acceptance of responsibility is shown when Cole accepted his consequences for robbing the store and gruesomely attacking Peter. At first Cole didn’t even care about the consequences of his actions. He thought that his parents were just going to grab a lawyer and get him to safety as soon as possible. As he realized that this wasn’t going to happen he faked …show more content…
He definitely shows this even in the far beginning of the story. At first Cole rejects their help and he even spits on Edwin to show that he didn’t accept their help and didn’t want their help at all. Along with this, Cole didn’t believe in their ways and he thought they were silly and stupid. However, throughout the course of the story Garvey and Edwin never even began to give up on Cole and slowly one by one he realized when he tried their methods and accepted their ways that they were right all along. He realized his Spirit Bear attack, his father’s jailing, and the near jail sentence all were leading to his realization that everyone was trying to help him. That Garvey and Edwin’s ways were helpful. As he starts using their ways he soon begins to feel enlightened and able to control his anger and to stop blaming others and accept responsibility. Along with this he learns how to be able to accept other people’s personalities and ways of doing things like Garvey and Edwin with their mysterious yet wise advice. All these previous events leading up to the acceptance of Garvey and Edwin’s advice showed that they were key to his acceptance but if he were to accept their ideas and ways in the first place there wouldn’t be any affect because he would still have the stubborn personality and just wanting to avoid jail. With the help of the spirit bear attack plus previous and later events Cole was able to accept Garvey and Edwin along with their
He forced Mallin into oral sex and then vaginally raped her. After that he drove the car back to Lubbock where he left on foot. There was plenty of evidence that should have sealed Cole’s innocence. When Michele Mallin described the

Garvey and Edwin help to get Cole over his anger, one way they do this is by being the first people to care about Cole. Another way Garvey
Frank Ocean once said, “When you 're happy, you enjoy the music. But when you 're sad, you understand the lyrics.” Why does one have to be sad to “understand the lyrics”? Evaluating a song and being given the ability to relate enhances one’s respect for the composer. For example, when one first listens to “Danny’s Song” by Kenny Loggins, they probably believe the song is about love, however, once a person analyzes the lyrics the realize that the song is actually a story of a couple who are having a baby boy.
One of the biggest ways Cole overcomes his anger is by doing the dance of anger. This dance helped him to overcome his anger because when he danced all his anger was drained from his body. His anger was drained from his body when he relived the pain, cold, and loneliness from the night of the attack. “I forgive you he cried loudly. I forgive you.”
Has anyone ever called you an animal? Have you been compared to a sloth because you were lazy, or a mouse because you were quiet? In my Language Arts class, we read the book “Touching Spirit Bear” by Ben Mikaelsen. In this novel, a troubled teenage boy named Cole is banished to an island to find and heal his soul after he severely beats a kid. During his stay on the island, Cole realizes that he is similar to several different animals.
At the beginning of the novel, Cole Matthews is a vicious teenager who thinks he is superior to everyone, but is, in fact, hiding behind a shield of anger, the result of being brutally abused by his drunken father. Cole’s father, Mr. Matthews, drinks non stop until he becomes a monster, and then ruthlessly beats Cole up. When talking to Garvey, a proud, Tlingit indian, who is also his parole officer, Cole opens up about his father’s abuse saying, “‘You don’t know what it’s like being hit over and over until you’re so numb you don’t feel anything!” (Mikaelsen 28).
The passage, Anthem, is a science fiction novel written by Ayn Rand. It is mainly about the protagonist, Equality 7-2521's, futuristic journey on rediscovering various aspects of human’s nature. Concepts such as individualism and freedom have been lost due to the oppressive rule of the government, serving as the main antagonist of the novel. Throughout the passage, Anthem, the author uses the literary element of theme. The theme is the main idea or underlying meaning of a literary work.
Everything will turn out right in the end, and Cole exhibits this. The whole reason that Cole ended up o the island in the first place is because he made bad choices. These choices led to more bad choices and then Cole had a traumatic experience. This changes Cole’s life forever.
“Fall seven times, stand up eight.- Japanese Proverb.” This quote shows how Cole had failures in his life but more success. Cole shows a lot of change throughout the book and this quote displays this because his failure shaped his behaviour. Each time he messed up, he learned from it, you make a mistake, and you make a success out of it. When he was instigating the fight with the Spirit Bear that he couldn’t win.
The story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson is a short story of horror and realism. On June 27th on a late summer morning, the villagers of a small New England village gatherd together in the town square to conduct their annual lottery. There is a black box on a stool and in the box there is pieces of paper in the box. Each person from a family get one paper from the black box even the children get a piece of paper and every stayed quiet and nervouse. Then Bill Hutchinson looked at the paper and notice that he got the black dot.
Cole was beaten by him throughout his childhood. This pain and anger gave him the personality and characteristic to inflict pain on other people. The two final themes have a very strong connection. In order to heal, mentally and physically, you have to learn to forgive and receive forgiveness. This was a lesson the reader and the main character, Cole, experience throughout the book.
The relationships in Cole’s life all had a different impact on him but specifically his relationship with Peter affected him a lot. Especially the part of the book when Cole found out that Peter told on him. “‘You’re a dead man,’ he warned... He laughed when he saw fear in Peter’s eyes”(7-8). This shows the relationship at the beginning of the book and clearly it wasn’t good.
Cole emphasizes in his lyrics that “life can’t be no fairytale, no once upon a time; but [he’ll] be God damned if a n***a don’t be tryin’”. Despite all the shortcomings of his city, that won’t stop Cole from trying to make something out of himself. In comparison, I always had to learn things the hard way, and I always failed at what I tried to achieve. However my mistakes never stopped from moving forward and I continue to overcome any obstacles that stand in my way. Living through the hard times motivates me to continuously work hard, and never settle for
Cole’s corrective actions against indulging in harmful and indelible actions redefines the true catalyst for healing: forgiveness. Beginning with his erroneous and detrimental mindset inciting his anger, his character change starts with his sudden epiphany and self-awareness, and then his
