Theodore John Kaczynski other wise known as the “Unabomber” is one of the most well known individual terrorist in the USA. During the the time from 1978 to 1995 Ted carried out a long destructive bombing campaign that killed 3 people and injured 23. His motive was to go against modern society and was fueled by his hatred towards technology. Therefore his targets were people and organizations associated with modern society. Not only will the some of the attacks themselves will be covered but Ted’s life leading up to the campaign will be analyzed also. The stated goals of Ted’s plan will be uncovered and the question of “was this bombing campaign successful?” will be answered. To begin, Theodore John Kaczynski was born May 22, 1942 in Chicago, …show more content…
Ted used a very specific way of bombing, that being the mail bomb. Ted’s initial bombing occurred on May 25, 1978 when he placed a package in a parking lot of Northwestern University with the return address of Buckley Crist, a professor at Northwestern University. Being suspicious of the unknown package Crist called campus police, officer Terry Marker opened the package as it exploded injuring Markers left hand. This initial bombing was followed up with a massive bomb being sent towards airline officials. Ted sent a bomb to American Airlines flight 444 big enough to obliterate the entire plane; luckily the bomb malfunctioned ending up smoking out the plane forcing it to have a emergency landing. This airline bombing attempt was when the FBI began to open up the case of the UNABOM (UNiveristy and Airline BOMber). After his 1979 airline bombing attempt there was another bomb sent to Percy Wood(President of United Airlines) in 1980 causing cuts and burns to his face. In 1982 to 1995 the injuries began to become much more serious from the bombings; they went from minor cuts and burns to severe burns, shrapnel wounds, and loss of body parts. All of this eventually led into Ted’s bombing on December 11, 1985 where he killed Hugh Scrutton by placing a nail and splinter loaded bomb outside his computer store. A similar attack occurred on February 20, 1987 in Salt Lake City, Ted placed a bomb outside Gary Wright’s computer store injuring his left arm. The weird thing about the 1987 bombing is that Ted did not bomb again until 1993 a whole 6 years. All of Ted’s targets in this time period were university professors, airline officials, and people closely connected with technology. In 1996 Ted was detained putting an end to this horrific run, in all 16 bombs were used in Ted’s run injuring 23 people and killing 3 all over a 17 year
Seeking revenge against the government, Timothy McVeigh knowingly, intentionally, willfully and maliciously carried out the deadliest act of domestic terrorism within the United States history. McVeigh, a Gulf War veteran, was seeking revenge against the federal government for its involvement in the 1993 Waco attack (Fox News, 2001). This attack ended in the casualty of 76 people exactly two years prior to the bombing, as well as for the 1992 Ruby Ridge incident (Fox News, 2001). McVeigh and Nichols planned a violent act against the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building and its occupants. McVeigh attempted to recruit others to assist in the act of violence.
On April 19, 1995, Timothy Mcveigh committed the most devastating terrorist attack at that time. This terrorist attack is known as the Oklahoma City Bombing which caused panic and chaos all over the United States. Early on that day, a Ryder truck containing a bomb made its way to the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. This building was a United States Federal Government complex located in Oklahoma city, Oklahoma which included a day care center. Half of the building collapsed a couple seconds after the bomb which was located in the the truck denoted.
“The Oklahoma City Bombing was the deadliest act of terror against the United States on American Soil until the attacks of September 11, 2001.” (Casey). The bombing was the hottest topic around the world for six whole years and is still very well know to this
A great terror struck our nation September 11, 2001, two aircraft’s hit the world trade centers, killing 2000 people and injuring over twice as many. A third aircraft flew into the Pentagon while a fourth crashed in a rural area in Pennsylvania. This day will forever be engrained into history as one of the worst terror attacks faced in this nation. Nearly three years later, in an attempt to figure out what happened on that tragic day, scholars came together to discuss the possible parallels between foreign and domestic terrorist. The author, Michael Kimmel, outlines the possible cause of the 2001 attacks and offers us a link between both foreign and domestic terrorism.
Luke 23: 24 ,”Then Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” That was the verse that 16th Street Baptist Church Sunday school lesson for September 15, 1963 was going to be based on (Howard, Betsy Child). Sadly, four very special little girls never got to hear it. The assassination of the four innocent little girls, Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson and Carol Denise McNair during the bombing of 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama was unjust because they were innocent, the main causes for the assassination were racial and political; however, in those days some people thought certain murder was acceptable, therefore making it just. The assassination of Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson, Cynthia Wesley and Denise Carol McNair was very unjust, because they were innocent, unoffending, and did not deserve to die that way. Addie, Cynthia, Carole, were only fourteen years old, and Denise was only eleven.
“To Catch a Bombmaker” by Clay Dillow appeared in Popular Science in October 2015. Catching a Bombmaker does not come easy; you must have intelligence, surveillance, and knowledge behind the science of a bomb. In “To Catch a Bombmaker” these three things led to a terrorist being caught in the action. Mr. Dillow’s purpose for writing this piece is to inform. Dillow is very professional in his writing.
In his “9/11 Address to the Nation” the 43rd President of the United States of America, George W. Bush assures that America will not be affected by the unruly and evil attacks carried out on September 11th, 2001. The President drafted this speech to resist the impending fear and questioning that American citizens around the country would soon be consumed by. Because 9/11 was the most impactful, yet devastating terrorist attack on the United States to date, Bush was not able to derive his thoughts from others’ ideas and speeches, thus he was forced to dig deep and extract the emotions and thoughts aroused by the “despicable acts.” Much like any great leader, President Bush wanted to stress the importance of instilling a sense of pride and resilience in the country and fellow countrymen and women to come together and remain as one. As the head of the “brightest beacon of freedom and opportunity” President George W. Bush declares that the United States of America will “remain strong” and appear unaffected as the country continues to build and rebound from the senseless acts of terrorism and hate.
The FBI began to scrutinize suspects who could have possibly committed the crime. Robert Chambliss was convicted in 1977 for murder because of how he had taken part in the church bombing. Thomas Edwin Blanton was also convicted for his role in this crime, in 2001, because of murder. Bobby Frank Cherry was convicted in 2002 for his role in the church bombing which was murder. Herman Frank Cash was not convicted, but authorities believed he played the part of the fourth conspirator in this
Fifteen years have passed since the United States was attacked by Al-Qaeda terrorists on September 11, 2001. The nineteen men who were involved in this outbreak were led by Osama bin Laden. They were instructed to hijack four airplanes and deliberately crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City. Families responded in fear and sorrow as they witnessed the planes crashed. Officials believe that the terrorists intended to destroy the White House or the United States Capitol.
“At approximately 2:49 that afternoon, with more than 5,600 runners still in the race, two pressure-cooker bombs–packed with shrapnel and other materials and hidden in backpacks that were placed on the ground amidst crowds of marathon-watchers–exploded within seconds of each other near the finish line along Boylston Street. The blasts instantly turned the sun-filled afternoon into a gruesome scene of destruction and chaos” (“Boston Marathon Bombings”). Soon after the attack a manhunt set out in search for the two suspects. Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were the Boston Marathon Bombers who caused an unexpected event that led to the manhunt. The bombings, along with the manhunt caused much chaos and destruction to the city as well as to the
Daniel, all United States inhabitants have basic rights. If they didn’t have the right of property, then the government could take whatever they want from the immigrants. Also I think your argument is one-sided, because it says that only newcomers may pose some danger. Take for example the Oklahoma City bombing. The two terrorists were Americans, who have lived in America their entire lives.
As teachers and adults, one always struggles to discuss difficult topics with children. The tragedy of 9/11 is one example, when adults must explain at least the basics to students, but it may be tough to approach. Today, in age, there are many societal issues which the youth and adults are struggling to tackle. People are left at loss for words at the hate crime occurring constantly in the United States. Recently, the events in Charlottesville, spurred by confusion and hate have the nation pointing fingers, when in contrast we should be uniting as fellow Americans.
Terrorist campaigns were climbing in decades prior to 9/11. A group of terrorists attacked New York’s World Trade Center on February 26, 1993. The aim of this attack was to drive two bomb loaded trucks into the basement of a building to bring down both of the towers of the World Trade Center. The mission was not accomplished, but the attack did kill six people. The organizer of this attack was Ramzi Yousef, whose uncle went on to be the operational commander of the attack at the World Trade Center on 9/11.
“Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.” George W. Bush delivered this speech on the night of the September 11 attacks. The shattered steel of the Twin Towers, once towering the New York City skyline, forever changed America and its response to terrorism. The largest foreign attack on U.S. soil appropriately gave reason to Americans to recoil in fear and lose trust in the future, but in reality, the country displayed the opposite reaction.
