Today, I met a group of people today who often visit the Theodore Roosevelt Island National Memorial, and fortunately they were kind enough to share an amazing quote with me. The quote states, “A great democracy has to be progressive or it will soon cease to be great, or a democracy.” The person who spoke that quote was Teddy Roosevelt, and in many ways his island reflects all the ideals that he stood for in his lifetime.

However, a great war displaced the tribe and caused the island to fall into hands of John Mason. His grandfather, George Mason, possessed a great deal of farmland that I presume brought him great wealth. Eventually, the Mason family eventually left, and it became a safe haven to a number of freed slaves, for the barracks were operated by freed slave militia hired by the Union (from the Theodore Roosevelt Info Board). After the war, The Washington Gas Light Company would use the house built by Masons for entertainment purposes, until they sold the house to the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial in 1931. Along the way, I asked a group of frequent visitors why so little people know about this place. They responded by saying,” Well, I know people don’t (go) here because it’s difficult (to) access by car and it’s a bit off the ball (unsure) and its considered far I think for someone who is on a bike.” I also asked what they think Theodore Roosevelt would have thought about the monument. The two visitors responded by saying, “I think everybody would want a beautiful (statue), he was wild, sort of outdoor sort of “far from the matting crowd”.
