Emergent leaders could lead people effectively if they embrace the difference between leadership and management. In essence, management is the aspect of doing things right while leadership is the aspect of doing right things. A leader and a manager play different roles, although people tend to use the two terms interchangeably. For instance, a manager facilitates the success of team members (Mumford, Watts & Partlow, 2015). Further, a manager ensures that members have whatever they require for success. Horizontal model of leadership enhances the dynamism that facilitates the action of emergent leaders. According to Luria and Berson (2013), the move to a horizontal model represents significant organizational change. Beyond structure, systems, processes, and culture, the changes extend down to the basic molecular level of organizational life (Luria & Berson, 2013). Employees are usually asked to assume collective and individual responsibility for business results. Resultantly, horizontal approach of leadership encourages team members to become “mini board members” since they have a big say in the progress of the organization. It eliminates the traditional underground conflicts, and enhances a norm of transparency and discussion (Felfe & Schyns, 2014). Abraham Zaleznik in his article, “Managers and Leaders: Are They Different?” (1977) puts forth a claim that in every aspect of personality and reaction to certain events, managers and leaders are fundamentally different from each other. In this paper, I shall summarize Zaleznik’s argument and subsequently his reasons and evidences to make such a claim. To build on his main claim, Zaleznik at first creates a fine line between managers and leaders based on their personalities. He states that a manager operates in the realms of rationality; his reasons being the structured, ordered environment managers exercise their power in: the business organization.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP It is important to appreciate that leadership roles are different from management functions. In Stephen Covey’s (1999) book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, he quoted Peter Drucker as saying: ‘Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things. In other words managers and leaders must be flexible, in order to get the best result out of their teams and individuals. In addition, this theory allows management and leadership to be able to identify and accurately diagnose the situation and vary employees’ behavior accordingly to the situation (Yukl and Mahsud, 2010). This will enable management and leadership at CIBCFCIB to select appropriate types of leadership behavior for each type of situation. Moreover, another impact that this theory has on organizational strategy whereby Charismatic leaders at CIBCFCIB can minimize various types of behaviour by increasing competent employees.

This paper is going to encompass different leadership theories and their relevance to my own personal personality and method of leadership. There will be information on the advantages and disadvantages of the leadership theories and information on each including examples. The purpose of this paper is to view various kinds of leadership theories and apply them to a real-life scenario. Leadership Theories There are quite a few different leadership theories available for people to take information from and use in business settings and even personal settings.
Leadership: Definition Leadership is the process of influencing the motive of the employees and so directing, guiding them to the proper completion of the short-term goals and the mission, vision of the firm. Leadership referring to achieve a specific set of goals of the business enterprise by minimizing risk and more advantage of opportunities is also called Entrepreneurial Leadership (Rao, 2015). Today leadership is such an iterative process when the leaders should have a variety of qualities and expertise in different area of management. Here, different theories will be explained which can clearly identify the scope, the responsibilities and the area of expertise required to be successful leader.
However, nowadays groups, companies and organizations need both powerful leaders and managers to produce desired results. Moreover, Abraham Zaleznik (1977) discussed the parallel between leaders and managers and mentioned that they both make a valuable contribution to an organization; although, each one’s contribution is different (Lunenburg, 2011). While some obvious similarities can be found between leadership and management, there are also some noteworthy differences, as previously stated. The purpose of this essay is to clarify the relationship between leadership and management based on existing literature.
